COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Thanks in a large part to a big day at the free throw line, Maryland cruised past Rider 103-76 on Tuesday evening at the XFINITY Center. Maryland, who controlled the boards and the paint all night, attempted 45 free throws total, including 21 makes in the first half, the most in a first half since also making 21 vs. Hofstra on Nov. 29, 2003.

Maryland led by as many as 29 points in the first half and kept the pressure on through the second half to complete the 15th-straight win in XFINITY Center, dating back to last season. The Terps' 27-point halftime lead was the program's largest since Nov. 17, 2016 against St. Mary's College of Maryland.

Julian Reese recorded his third consecutive double-double (22 points and 12 rebounds); it was also his first-ever first-half double-double. Jordan Geronimo continued his impressive play, finishing with 15 points on six-of-six shooting while Jahmir Young added 22 points and five assists.

The Terps finished with a 29-15 advantage in free throw makes as well as 21-11 advantage in points off turnovers after forcing 14 Rider giveaways.

Maryland reached triple-digits scoring for the first time since Jan. 15, 2021 when it beat Wingate 100-58. Maryland scored its most points since beating Marshall 104-67 on Nov. 23, 2018.

Coach Willard's Take

"In the first half our defense gave us a lot of opportunities for fast break points. We turned them over 9 times, had 22 deflections. I thought our defense led to us getting easy buckets early. Again, being at home, we had two really good days of practice this week going into this game, I think everyone's just starting to feel a little more comfortable with each other now. Especially that starting unit, they're one of the most productive units in the country and I think they;re getting more and more used to what each other is doing."

From The Guys

"We just went and got after it," Geronimo said of the defensive intensity. "We played with a lot of energy. We got some defensive stops to lead to buckets. We just went out there, played defense and got stops, and it's gonna create offense for us."

"We were moving the ball side-to-side, making sure we limited them to one shot, getting out in transition, playing unselfish and attacking the basket," Young said. "We were able to get in the bonus early and tried to knock down our free throws, just playing from defense to offense."

Breaking Down the Action
  • Keyed by a pair of Jamie Kaiser three-pointers, Maryland led 14-8 at the first media timeout.
  • As Jordan Geronimo began to assert himself on both ends of the floor, scoring 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the first 12 minutes of action, the Terps stretched the lead to 35-18.
  • A pair of Jahmir Young free throws capped off a 19-2 Maryland run as the Terps blew the game open, going up 39-18.
  • Due in large part to 21 free throw makes, Maryland led 54-27 at halftime. Geronimo (13) and Julian Reese (12) combined for 25 points to lead the way. Reese also grabbed 10 boards to secure the first-half double-double, the first of his career.
  • The Terps opened up a 30-point lead early in the second half and continued to cruise from there the rest of the way.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior defensive back Tarheeb Stillhas been named Second Team All-Big Ten and six other Terps garnered all-conference accolades as the league announced its honorees on defensive and special teams on Tuesday.

Still was voted Second Team All-Big Ten by the conference’s coaches, while the media chose the senior defensive back to the third team. Linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II was named Third Team All-Big Ten by the coaches, while the media chose him for the honorable mention team.

Other Terps voted Honorable Mention All-Big Ten include linebacker Jaishawn Barham (coaches), defensive back Beau Brade (media & coaches), defensive lineman Quashon Fuller (coaches), defensive back Ja’Quan Sheppard (coaches) and return specialist Braeden Wisloski (media).

The six total Terrapin defensive players recognized with All-Big Ten accolades is the most for Maryland since 2014.

Still currently ranks third nationally in interceptions per game (0.5) and fifth nationally in total interceptions (5). The senior had a pair of interceptions in each of Maryland’s wins over Virginia and Nebraska, making him one of only three FBS players to have two games with two interceptions. Still was named the Jim Thorpe National Defensive Back of the Week and the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after his two-interception performance at Nebraska. Still is the first Maryland defensive player to be named Second Team or better since Antoine Brooks Jr. in 2019. This is the second All-Big Ten selection of Still’s career, earning Honorable Mention plaudits in 2020.

Hyppolite II stands second on the team with 62 tackles this season, tallying 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. One of the leaders of the Maryland defense that allowed only 23.2 points per game this season, Hyppolite has six games with at least six tackles including 10 stops in a huge performance against No. 2 Michigan.

Barham has tallied 37 tackles (23 solo) with three sacks and an interception in his sophomore campaign, standing second on the team in sacks. The sophomore had at least four tackles in seven different games including a two-sack performance against Charlotte and an interception against No. 2 Michigan. This is Barham’s second-straight All-Big Ten selection.

Brade leads the Terps with 72 tackles (26 solo), while also tallying four tackles for loss, six pass breakups, one interception and a forced fumble. He led the Terps in tackles in six of his 11 games played, including double-digit tackles at Michigan State and against No. 2 Michigan. Brade had a key forced fumble late in the game at Nebraska and secured an interception at Michigan State. This is Brade’s second-straight All-Big Ten selection.

Fuller stands second on the team with five tackles for loss and three sacks while recording 20 tackles (14 solo) on the season. One of Maryland’s best pass rushers, Fuller has five quarterback hits and has recorded tackles for loss in games against Michigan State, Indiana, No. 9 Penn State, Nebraska and Rutgers.

Sheppard leads the Terps with seven pass breakups this season to go with his 29 tackles (26 solo), three tackles for loss and one sack. The senior is one of only three Maryland defensive players to start in all 12 games this season and has helped lead the Terps pass defense that stands top-20 in the nation in defensive passing efficiency and has seven games of allowing under 210 passing yards. This is Sheppard’s first career All-Big Ten selection and second All-Conference selection as he was First Team All-AAC at Cincinnati last season.

Wisloski has made an impact as Maryland’s primary kick returner, standing third in the Big Ten and 22nd in the country, averaging 23.5 yards per kick return. The freshman returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against Virginia, the longest return by a Maryland freshman since Stefon Diggs in 2012. Frank Reich - A Little Historic Terrapin Note

November 1984 Reich threw 6 touchdown passes in a come from behind 31-0 against Miami. Today he was anointed as Carolina head coach. Great QB back then. Hope he does well or maybe he can do Tv/Radio Talk Show like Boomer. Anyway, there are Terps out there who have done well for themselves. Hey Randy (White) - if you are out there. Remember us? For some reason you ain't so fond of us anymore. Oh well. Congrats Frank. We have had (and still have) a proud football heritage.

Something positive-IMHO-Uniforms

The Terps away uniform yesterday is my favorite, and it looks iconic Maryland, now and in the past. It looks clean, sharp, and professional looking. I think it represents the DMV image well. I also like the all red, red on white, and all white to a lesser degree. I don't like the other combos, although the all black isn't bad, but the gold is ugly, just flat out ugly.
