College football Week 1 TV ratings

Thought these numbers were pretty interesting for several reasons.

1. ESPN is nowhere to be found in the top 5. The reason for this is likely two fold. First, anyone with Charter cable is not currently getting ESPN. And second, they no longer have Big Ten programs like Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and even Nebraska with their massive followings.

2. The move by the Big Ten to go to an NFL-like TV setup throughout the day on Saturdays, utilizing the major broadcast networks is looking more brilliant by the day. As Fox's pregame show gains in popularity and leads in to bigger and bigger league games, they are going to do massive numbers at noon on Fox, 3:30 on CBS and then 7:30 on NBC. And of course NBC is going to have their own lead-in show which will be on campus in College Park this weekend.

3. Northwestern-Rutgers was top 10 in the ratings!!! That is insane. Combination of being on Sunday and broadcast on CBS, but again, getting your program in front of that many eyeballs is huge. Especially for schools like Rutgers or Maryland. I'm sure in future years we will see some Big 12-Big Ten Thursday or Sunday matchups on Fox or maybe Notre Dame-Big Ten on NBC that will just do ridiculous numbers like FSU-LSU did this past Sunday.

Anyways, here are the numbers...

Recruiting Rumor Mill: Malik Washington mention

This morning's recruiting rumor mill piece from the national team has a mention of Malik Washington. He led Spalding to their second straight MIAA title last night at Towson. He was also in College Park on Saturday to see the Terps' almost knock off Michigan. This has seemed like a MD-PSU battle throughout and the fact that they have already taken a QB certainly seems to help Maryland's chances.

Lineup change

There are no trades and we can't call someone up from the minors, so my idea is to change positions with DHS and Kaiser. Admittedly, there may not be much difference between a wing forward and a wing guard, but DHS is a few pounds heavier and Kaiser is probably a better outside shooter, so I'd try that adjustment. Maryland has three games to fix things, so that's my "solution". What thinkest thou?

Snap Counts & PFF Grades: Michigan

Here are your snap counts and PFF grades from Saturday's loss. Obviously, I'm just an observer and not paid the big bucks to make the big decisions, but I found it rather interesting that many think that was the team's best effort of the season coming up just short against one of the top title contenders. But when you look at the snap counts, there wasn't a lot of significant rotating of guys through the lineup and a lot of wholesale changes. It was the same key guys pretty much on the field for the entire game. It is a delicate balance, I know, as you have to keep guys prepared to play if something unexpected happens and you want guys fresh for big games, but it also makes you wonder if it is more difficult for guys to really get into a rhythm of a game when there are so many guys rotating in.
