***Nicholls State Game Thread***

About 30 minutes from tip off between the Terps and Nicholls State in the final tuneup before Maryland travels out to LA to face UCLA. Former Terps director of player personnel Tevon Saddler is in his first year at Nicholls St. and is the youngest head coach in D1.

This is a game where Maryland simply needs to assert themselves in the paint and dominate. Nicholls St. is awful on the glass and can't make shots in the paint.

With that said, they do have road wins over LSU and South Alabama. So they are capable of shooting themselves into a game from beyond the arc if their opponent is ice cold, but again, control the paint and this should be an easy win for Maryland.

Game can be seen on BTN.

Just for fun

n this tipsy world of the new college football, lets assume both FSU and Clemson bolt the ACC for the B1G. Could we have an open rotating schedule for football and BB, and then have east and west divisions for the non-revenue sports? Do we go to pods, 4-5 team pods?

EAST

Clemson
UMD
Rutgers
PSU
Michigan
MIchigan State
Indiana
Purdue
OSU

WEST

USC
UCLA
WASH
Oregon
Neb.
Wis.
Illinois

OR pods

pod 1 FSU, Clemson, UMD, PSU, Rutgers

pod 2. Michigan, MSU, Indiana, Purdue, OSU

Play everyone in your pod and 2 each from the other pods rotating yearly.

Locksley says this afternoon...

Says its supply and demand as far as the o-line goes having lost a number of guys the past couple of years. The goal is to have 17 on scholarship every season and depth has been an issue so now they have signed 8 high school linemen and added a few plug and play guys from the transfer portal. If you want to win in the Big Ten, you have to be able to have your o-line and d-line set and we got some d-linemen last year and we think we got the o-linemen we need moving forward during this cycle.

With Braydon Lee, whenever you are able to keep a talent like him home, it is helpful. His recruiting process was very normal for what they see here. Every school comes to the DMV to recruit and when you have the length and short area quickness he has everyone is going to recruit him. We believe he's the kind of guy that can come in and help us immediately. When he committed to South Carolina early on we called him and congratulated him but asked if he was willing to let us continue to recruit him and he said he would. And today he made the decision where he trusted the process we put in place for him.

Says it is hard for South Carolina to be a rival when you don't actually play each other in football. We try to put a wall around the DMV and we will always start here first but Braydon saw the value in playing here and it was a good win for us but can't call SC a rival until we actually schedule a game with them.

Terez Davis and Ryan Howerton and guys like that have the physical size to come in and play right away, whereas some of the guys around 280 will need time to develop and get bigger to have the size to compete in this league. But it all starts in the trenches and we put an emphasis on the o-line after putting an emphasis on the d-line last cycle.

When we look at tape or watch a kid in person, we don't look at their stars by recruiting services. We look for guys that we think will be a fit for our system. Graduating two corners, there's going to be competition there and the young guys will have a shot. But the further away from the ball the more likely a guy is to play right away.

You have the angst that comes along with adding the new guys but now you also have to always be recruiting your current guys to keep them in the fold and it takes a number of man hours to recruit in this era.

Guys see the value in coming in and enrolling early as far as on the field and getting acclimated, but academics also has a lot to do with it with guys graduating early and continuing their careers.

Good Counsel coach Andy Steffaneli played a role in getting Judah Jenkins in this class and when you have a chance to add a guy who got better as the season went on and finished his high school career the way he did it is always good for your program.

Analysis: Are we the state of DEs?

So there have been a ton of DEs signing with other schools. I honestly didn’t realize that MD is the home of DEs. The below list is not 100 percent as I didn’t go through every team. We need pass rushers as much as anyone so stay home locals……just one or two.

Michigan: three MD DEs
Penn State: three MD DEs
WVU: one MD DE
Wisconsin: one MD DE

WBB: Sellers scores career-high 29 points as Terps run past JMU, 78-55

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Behind a career-high 29-point outing from Shyanne Sellers, Maryland won its 18th consecutive home game, defeating James Madison 78-55 on Wednesday afternoon at the XFINITY Center. The Terps have won seven games in a row to improve to 9-3 overall.

Sellers scored 20 of her 29 points in the first half. Sellers also tallied eight rebounds and six assists along with two blocks.

Bri McDaniel added 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Faith Masonius scored eight points and grabbed her 500th career in the first quarter.

The Terps used a 30-14 run bridging the first and second quarter to take control of the game.

Defensively, Maryland was outstanding all afternoon, holding James Madison to just 20-of-74 shooting (27 percent) and forcing 21 JMU turnovers.

Peyton McDaniel led James Madison (8-4) with 25 points and eight rebounds.

Brenda's Take
"It starts with your best player and one of the best in the country. I thought Shy, her week of practice led to her mentality. She set the tone from the tip. We're asking her to carry a huge load and that's what continues to make her so special.

"Love these last seven wins that we've had in a row, taking care of business. Now, it's taking a great break and coming back and being ready for our conference."

Breaking Down The Action

  • After falling behind 9-0, the Terps rattled off an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter to give them an 11-9 lead. Shyanne Sellers and Faith Masonius combined for nine of the 11 points in that span.
  • Sellers canned a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to give the Terps an 18-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Terps out-scored James Madison 17-11 in the second quarter as Sellers scored another 10 points in the frame, giving her 20 for the half.
  • Maryland held James Madison without a field goal for the final 4:38 of the third quarter as the Terps grabbed a 57-42 lead. JMU finished the quarter making just one of its final 14 field goal attempts.
  • A pair of free throws with 6:42 remaining and the Terps in full control gave Sellers her career-high in scoring.

Home Win Streak Continues

  • Maryland has now won 18 straight home games, dating back to a Dec. 11, 2022 win over UConn, one year ago to the day.
  • Maryland is 308-44 (.875) at home under Brenda Frese, whose first season in College Park was the inaugural season of XFINITY Center. That is among the top 10 toughest places to play in the country.
  • The Terrapins are 172-12 (.935) all-time in non-conference games in XFINITY Center.
  • The Terps are now 602-139 in College Park since the start of the program in 1971-72. Maryland has a remarkable 81.3 win percentage in home games all-time.

Double-Figure Factors

  • Sellers (29 points) has scored in double-figures in nine of 12 games this season and 50 games in her career. It was the fifth time this season and ninth in her career with 20-plus points.
  • McDaniel tallied 16 points for her sixth game this season and eighth in her career in double-figures.
Records Watch

  • Brinae Alexander has made 99 three-pointers in her two years as a Terrapin, which is No. 20 in the Terps' career record book. She needs to make three more to pass Terri Daniels (101 from 2000-03) at No. 19.
  • Alexander's Maryland career three-point percentage is 43.0%, which is third in Maryland history, behind just Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (45.9%) and Katie Benzan (47.4%).

Lia opts out of Music City Bowl

Well, after saying himself multiple times he would play in the bowl game, Locksley announced this afternoon that Lia has opted out of the Terps' bowl game and his Maryland career is over. We will likely see Billy Edwards and Cam Edge split reps in the bowl game as they look to get a leg up on the competition for the starting job before Morris arrives. More at the link below.

The latest football recruiting intel ahead of National Signing Day

With NSD right around the corner on Wednesday, here is the latest intel going into Wednesday morning....

- With regards to the O-linemen, they obviously already landed a commitment from Purdue transfer Josh Kaltenberger and hosted several others as the offensive trenches are again the team's biggest need going into the offseason. Indiana transfer Zach Carpenter visited last week and was set to announce yesterday but that never materialized. He took an official visit to Miami over the weekend and as things stand now, I think it is unlikely he picks Maryland. The Terps also hosted Michigan State transfer Keyshawn Blackstock, who had already committed to Arkansas but took a visit to Maryland anyways. He has reconfirmed his commitment to the Razorbacks and has shut it down.

The Terps hosted Murray State OL DJ Jones late last week. He took one more final official visit to UAB over the weekend and is expected to make a commitment in the very near future. Looking at all the schools he visited (Maryland, Appalachian State, Western Kentucky and UAB) the Terps likely have the most to offer but he still has to make sure it is the right decision for him.

Finally, the Terps hosted Georgia transfer OL Aliou Bah, a former Rivals250 prospect who played at IMG. It sounds like the visit went extremely well and Maryland is well positioned to land a commitment. He redshirted in 2022 so he has three years of eligibility remaining.

- At defensive back, the Terps already landed local product Jalen Huskey of Bowling Green, but still need more corners. They hosted UNC transfer and Tidewater native Tayon Holloway over the weekend and it sounds like the visit went well and there is a strong connection there with fellow Tidewater native Latrell Scott. With that said, he previously visited Louisville and he's scheduled to visit LSU after the start of the new year. In the end, my gut feeling is that the Terps win out on this one, but still have a ways to go.

I still like Maryland's chances with local high school Rivals250 prospect and South Carolina commit Braydon Lee. There was a bit of South Carolina chatter in recent days but I'm not really buying it. This has felt like a Maryland flip for quite some time now and I'll be more surprised if he signs with the Cocks instead of flipping to the Terps and nothing has happened to change my mind.

Finally, Nebraska has been working hard to flip Florida four-star DB Larry Tarver and I know early on I had pretty much dismissed it, but Nebraska has some real momentum right now. It is also worth noting that Tarver flipping could also play a factor in three-star LB Jeremiah Marcelin flipping to the Terps from Pitt. For now, I think they both end up Terps, but I'm actually a little less confident than I was before. Maryland is going to have to work hard to fight off Nebraska, Pitt and Louisville, who is continuing to work Marcelin.

- The Terps hosted Central Michigan DL Quindario Lee over the weekend and it sounds like that visit went well. But Georgia is also in the mix here and this recruitment is going to go into the spring.

- With regards to high school offensive linemen, the Terps should be signing Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances former Michigan State commit Logan Bennett. He decommitted from Michigan State back in early November immediately following a visit to Maryland for a game the weekend prior. Other offers included BC, Colorado and more. At 6-foot-5, 295, he projects as an interior lineman.

As for the biggest fish still (supposedly) out there for the Terps, Jordan Seaton, a five-star, the No. 13-ranked player nationally and the top offensive lineman in the class according to Rivals, had an interesting post to social media over the weekend. He apparently posted an instagram story with a pic of Rak Jarrett and Locks. Of course, Rak was a five-star flip from LSU who also attended St. John's in DC. I also found it very odd that he committed to Colorado when they weren't on his list and that he had this whole statement about how important it is to play for a black head coach (hello Locks!). Maybe I'm way off base here, but this just has the feel of one of those shocking Locks orchestrated flips. I honestly never felt great about Seaton, despite the staff feeling good about where they stood throughout, but if anyone could pull this stunner off, it is Locksley.

- With regards to local Rivals250 high school D-line prospect Ernest Willor, it feels like Wisconsin has the momentum, especially with him not taking a planned visit to Maryland. I really thought they would pull this one off--and they still might--but for now the Badgers are clearly the team to beat.

And as for Lugard Edokpayi, the Terps were able to get him on campus for a visit a couple of weekends ago, but we'll have to wait and see if Locks can pull off the stunner.
