It’s been a while…

since I’ve posted here. Gotta go all the way back to when the Orioles dropped all their games in the playoffs. Got disgusted and decided to take a sports break. The Terps losing to the Illini and NW didn’t help matters either. Really thought we’d win nine regular season games this year, but it just didn’t happen. That’s sports I guess.

Reading today that Lia has opted out of the bowl game is infuriating as hell to me. It would’ve been nice to announce this news right after the last game. Had he done that, perhaps us fans who have already bought airfare, rental cars, hotel rooms, and game tickets could’ve said the heck with it and stayed home. We buy tickets to come see YOU play and to root on our BEST players.

With kids moving on to other schools, getting bigger paydays, or announcing they’re not playing in the bowl game, what is the value for us as fans to even attend? I’m not seeing it, save for going to a new city and to check off another team who I’ve wanted to see in person for years.

With that said, college football is a mess and it’s only getting worse. Payouts to players needs to be regulated. If it’s not, then only the money schools get better.

If I was ever in a decision-making position in the NCAA, the one thing I’d be a stickler on is the play requirement. No player would be allowed to opt out of a game by his/her choosing. You got a $100,00 education for free, so how about living up to your end of the bargain and playing the darn game?

MLAX: Michael Phipps officially named Terps offensive coordinator

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland men’s lacrosse has hired Michael Phipps as assistant coach/offensive coordinator, head coach John Tillman announced on Wednesday.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Michael Phipps back to the University of Maryland,” Tillman said. “He brings great experience, strong knowledge of coaching at this level, and a deep love for the university and the tradition of the program. Michael has a history of developing strong relationships with his players and I know he’ll be a great mentor for all our players as they strive to be their best.”

A 2007 graduate of the University of Maryland, Phipps brings a wealth of experience to College Park, both as a coach and as a former Terp himself, and is regarded as one of the top offensive minds in the game.

“I’m very excited to be back at The University of Maryland,” Phipps said. “It feels great to be home. Coaching at my alma mater is a dream come true and I’m honored to be part of a team that gave me so much as a player. I’m so thankful to Coach Tillman for this opportunity. I can’t wait to get started, to get to know this team, and to help continue and grow the Maryland tradition - 'Be the Best'."

Phipps joins the Terps after a season at Navy—his second stint with the Midshipmen. Prior to that, Phipps spent five seasons at Georgetown where eight of his offensive players accounted for a combined 11 All-America citations. Additionally, Phipps helped lead the Hoyas to two consecutive BIG EAST regular-season titles in 2021 and 2022, four BIG EAST Tournament crowns (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022) and four NCAA Tournament appearances (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022).

With Phipps at the helm of the offense, the Hoyas ranked in the top-10 in scoring offense in three of his last four years. Additionally, Georgetown was ranked in the top-10 in points per game and assists per game in each of his last four seasons.

During his first stint at Navy, Phipps helped guide Navy to a share of the Patriot League regular-season title in both 2015 and 2016. The 2016 season also saw the Midshipmen advance to the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinals. In 2017, Navy averaged 15.21 points per game, the best mark in program history at that time.

Phipps also served as an assistant coach at High Point from 2012-14, spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Severn School, and, in 2008, served as the Director of Lacrosse Operations at Maryland upon graduation from his almamater.

While at Maryland, Phipps, a 2007 USILA honorable mention All-American, was a starting attackman for three years who totaled 95 points (48G, 47A) over his four-year career. After a senior season where he amassed a team-high 50 points and 28 goals, he was the recipient of the Van Trump Award as a senior, honoring the team’s best attackman.

Phipps went on to play professionally in the Major Lacrosse League (MLL) from 2008-2010, playing with both the Los Angeles Riptide and Chesapeake Bayhawks.

Phipps has numerous familial ties to the University of Maryland. His grandfather Buster was an All-American as a Terpand his father Wilson was part of Maryland’s 1975 National Championship team. Additionally, his brother Brian Phipps was a standout goalie at Maryland from 2007-2010 who also starred in the PLL with the Whipsnakes.

Phipps returns to the University of Maryland with his wife, Maggie, and two daughters, Finley and Emmy.

He joins a coaching staff that includes Tillman, assistant coaches Jesse Bernhardt and Tim O’Branski, as well as Director of Player Development, Jared Bernhardt.

Latest on top unsigned OL Jordan Seaton

From Adam Friedman, the latest on Seaton, who did not sign with Colorado yesterday. There was a lot of buzz that he would pick Maryland yesterday but he ultimately chose to hold off. He quietly visited Maryland last weekend and as I've mentioned numerous times, the staff has felt good about where they sat with Seaton throughout with Locks being point on this recruitment for years now.

I think it is worth noting that Colorado has had numerous decommitments in recent weeks and days and Deion only signed FIVE high school prospects yesterday. You read that right, FIVE! That's gotta be alarming if you are Seaton and expecting all of these guys to jump on board.

And I know I've mentioned it before, but his whole thing about playing early being of utmost importance and getting on board with a black head coach when he announced on Undisputed was a real head scratcher, considering Locks needs at least one, possibly TWO starting tackles in the Big Ten and has WAY more pull in the 'being a black head coach' department than Prime does having founded the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches.

Watch the video and listen to him say it himself at the 8:40 mark.

I don't pretend to know what this kid is thinking at this point, but taking everything I've seen, heard, been told, etc. this definitely feels like the kind of flip Locks could pull off. Obviously NIL is going to play a factor, but listening to him talk about what is important, Maryland checks all the boxes and, frankly, Maryland is a much better program than Colorado right now and plays in a better league. Based on what Adam heard from a source last night, it feels like we could get a decision anytime between now and tomorrow. So we wait. More at the link below.
