Rick Pitino and the Maryland job

I'm surprised no one had posted this yet. As you all know, I reported early on during the search that Maryland had reached out to Pitino through some back channels and I was hearing that some highly placed sources believed he would be the next head coach. In this story by Matt Norlander, Pitino said he was basically offered a job he turned down and Norlander says that job is Maryland. Here's the quote from the story:

"I was offered three really good jobs last year," Pitino said. "But I told the one job, it was a big-time job, I said, 'Look, I've got a $5 million buyout. I had $10 million prior to that. I'm not worth that.'"

Sources told CBS Sports the job Pitino is alluding to is Maryland. (Update: a source re-confirmed that Maryland reached out to Pitino, but clarified that contact did not lead to a job offer.)

I am actually seeing now they updated the story to show that Maryland reached out to Pitino but did not offer him the job. That is exactly what I reported and exactly what happened. Just interesting to now hear Pitino basically confirm what I reported early on. There was a faction of boosters who wanted Pitino and reached out to try to convince him to take the job. That said, things had been put in motion with Willard from a very early stage and I'd also guess Pitino didn't want to battle one of his proteges for the job.

In the grand scheme of things, I think we can safely say Willard was the right guy for the job. He put together an amazing staff, prioritized recruiting the DMV and landed a top recruiting class and brought in a potential 1st team All-Big Ten player through the portal who prepped at DeMatha. No one in their wildest dreams probably thought this team would have a chance of finishing 2nd in the league with 3 games left to play.

With regards to Pitino's future, I've heard Georgetown, South Florida and St. John's as possibilities for next year. Have also heard Brey could possibly be in the mix for G'town, as well. I was told at the time, one of the things that kept Pitino at Iona was the school's proximity to Winged Foot. G'town is just a hop, skip and a jump from Congressional, although not basically on campus like Winged Foot is at Iona. Will be interesting to see where he winds up.

***Minnesota Game Thread***

We're about 20 minutes from tipoff between the Terps and Minnesota in College Park. Maryland dismantled Minnesota in the first meeting in Minneapolis. They are 15.5-point favorites just ahead of tipoff and given how the Terps have looked at home this season, this one shouldn't be close.

Usual starters tonight for Maryland:

Jahmir Young
Don Carey
Hakim Hart
Donta Scott
JuJu Reese

Men & Women’s b-ball success at home…

Between the men’s and women’s hoops teams they have a combined 18-game home winning streak at Xfinity with each on 9-game home win streaks. Of course men are only B1G team undefeated at home in conference games (8-0) and only home loss was to #4 UCLA (14-1). Women’s success at home this season included 1st program win over UConn and wins vs #6 Iowa last night, and #10 Ohio State and #13 Michigan. Speaking of last night, Mike Hall called the women’s game and also has the men’s call tonight too with Stephen Bardo on BTN at 7:00.

WBB: No. 7 Terps shoot down. No. 6 Iowa, 96-68

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 7 Maryland knocked down a season-high 14 three-pointers, including 10 in the first half as part of a 29-4 run, to blow out No. 6 Iowa, 96-68, on Tuesday night at XFINITY Center before 9,065 boisterous fans.

The win moves Maryland (23-5 overall) into a tie for second place in the Big Ten, with the Hawkeyes (22-6) as both teams at 14-3. The Terps have won 16 of their last 18 games, winning the last five in row. Maryland won its last nine home games of the season and finished the year 11-2 at XFINITY Center.

Briane Alexander was the story of the night as she led the Terps with a season-high 24 points as she made 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Her six triples equaled the most by a Terp in any game this season – tying her own mark of six against Rutgers on Jan. 15.

Lavender Briggs also scored a season-high with 19 points, making a season-best 3-of-3 from three-point range.

Shyanne Sellers had a tremendous all-around game with 17 points, making 3-of-7 three-pointers, 10 rebounds and seven assists – as she had her second double-double of the season. Diamond Miller scored 16 for her 26th game in double-figures this season.

Maryland beat its sixth ranked opponent of the season and fourth Top-10 foe with wins over No. 6 UConn, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 10 Ohio State along with victories over No. 13 Michigan and No. 17 Baylor.

The Terps are now tied with No. 2 Indiana for most wins over Top-10 teams this season as Maryland makes a push for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland also has four Top-10 wins in the regular season for the first time since 1978-79.

Maryland took control of the game with that massive 29-4 run the spanned the last first quarter and early second quarter as they hit seven three-points in a span of nine minutes with Alexander canning four of them on the run.

The loss was Iowa's biggest of the season and the largest for the Hawkeyes since they lost by 32 in the 2019 NCAA Elite Eight to Baylor, 85-53. Maryland scored the most points against Iowa this season surpassing the previous high of 94 scored by NC State. It is the most Iowa has allowed since Maryland beat the Hawkeyes 104-84 on March 13, 2021.

Iowa's Caitlin Clark was limited to just 18 points as she made just 5-of-13 from the floor after she scored 42 against Maryland in their first meeting this season. Clark came into the game averaging 27.3 points per game.

Brenda's Take

" I can't say enough about this team and how they attacked the game tonight. That's what I love about this group, they took it to heart back when we went to Iowa and you just saw the focus and the intention tonight. I thought that second quarter was a thing of beauty. We saw the defensive game plan that we had practiced and offensively we were so unselfish and sharing the basketball."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Iowa led 20-19 at the end of a face-paced first quarter as the teams were separated by no more than five points the entire quarter.
  • Maryland opened the second quarter hot from three-point range as Alexander and Meyers each hit two triples and Briggs knocked down another in the first 4:30 to give the Terps a 36-22 lead thanks to a 14-0 run. The Terps hit 10 first-half three-pointers, making 10-of-20 to lead 46-28 at intermission. A run of 29-4 spanned nearly nine minutes bridging the two quarters as Alexander had 12 points in the spurt. Maryland led by 44-24, marking the largest deficit for Iowa this entire season, down 20 points. Clark was held to just eight first-half points as the Hawkeyes had their fewest points in the first half since they trailed Iowa State 28-23 on Dec. 7, 2022.
  • In the third quarter, Maryland opened a lead as large as 24 points as Briggs scored five points in a row to put the Terps up 71-45 with two minutes left. The Terps led 73-49 after the third quarter.

Maryland returns six starters on the offensive side of the ball in 2023. The potent Terrapins offense ranked Top 5 in the Big Ten in points per game (28.2), yards per game (401.2) and passing yards per game (259.8) last season. Top returners include Second Team All-Big Ten quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, Freshman All-American running back Roman Hemby and All-Big Ten offensive lineman Delmar Glaze.

A much improved Maryland defense brings back five starters in 2023, including Freshman All-American Jaishawn Barham and All-Big Ten defensive back Beau Brade. Last year, the Terrapin defense allowed its fewest points and touchdowns in a season since 2010.

Latest Bracketology 2-21-23

Maryland is still sitting at a 7 seed in the West Region, facing Boise State with the probable matchup against Arizona in the Round of 32.

I would say that taking care of home games and winning 1/2 on the road would at least keep them on a 7 seed and possibly move them to a more favorable region or even up a seed depending on what happens in the last two weeks of the regular season. Anything beyond that would be even better obviously.

Added bonus, UNC is finally listed generously as 1st 4 out.

The sun came up

Despite my ranting yesterday, hope springs eternal this morning. Despite the defeat at Nebraska, Maryland only fell from 16 to 18 with Kenpom and we're the same number with Jeff Sagarin (i.e., 18th nationally). Assuming two wins at home this week (Sagarin has us a little over a 4 point favorite against NW), we'll go into the last week with a chance for a BT double bye and a decent seed for March Madness. Enjoy it while we can.

The Terps enter Sunday's game coming off of the high of defeating No. 3 Purdue at home by 14 points earlier in the week. Nebraska, meanwhile, has won three of their last four and two straight coming into Sunday's meeting with the Terps.

For the Terps, who have won six of their last seven games, Sunday will be all about avoiding a let down coming off of an impressive, emotional win at home and facing a team they already defeated earlier this year by 19 points.

In the first meeting between Maryland and Nebraska, the Terps allowed the Huskers to shoot 53% from the field. They will be looking to play tougher defense Sunday in Lincoln, similar to the way they did in their two road wins earlier this season where they held both Louisville and Minnesota under 35% shooting from the field.

In particular, the Terps are likely to focus on junior guard Keisei Tominaga, who is coming off of a 22-point performance in the Huskers' last outing at Rutgers in which he was 4 of 9 from beyond the arc. Tominaga is shooting the ball as well as anyone in the country in the month of February, having scored 20-plus points in four straight games while shooting 18 of 38 (47.3%) from beyond the arc during that stretch.

For Maryland, they will look for senior guard Jahmir Young to continue his stellar play on the perimeter while Julian Reese continues his impressive play inside. The Terps could also see senior forward Patrick Emilien get significant minutes, coming off of one of his best outings of the season versus Purdue. He scored a season-high 10 points, while also adding seven rebounds a steal and a block in the first meeting between these two teams.

If the Terps can bring their defensive intensity for a full 40 minutes Sunday, they should have an excellent chance of coming away with their third road win of the season.
