Latest on Derik Queen…

First, I want to note that Maryland pulled out all the stops for Queen, including celebrating mom’s birthday with a cake. Also used messages from as many Baltimore Terps as possible. Again, Maryland really did an excellent job of pitching the hometown angle, and that hometown would be BALTIMORE, not the ‘DMV.’ But again, an excellent job by the staff to really make him feel like College Park is home.

All of that said, like it or not, today’s recruitments are very much about fit, getting guys to the next level and NIL. Especially five-star big men ranked in the top 20, as they are tough to come by.

After wrapping up his visit in Maryland on Sunday, Queen was back in Florida Monday and was paid a visit by Indiana head coach Mike Woodson. Again, the Hoosiers are pushing the ‘play with your five-star friend Liam McNeeley’ angle, while also having very competitive NIL package.

Maryland head coach Kevin Willard, along with lead recruiter David Cox are expected in Florida today to see Queen. A post-visit follow up and to likely also gauge what the competition is up to at the 11th hour. Again, still haven’t heard anything to make me think the Terps don’t lead in this recruitment and as I’ve also mentioned, they have allocated a large chunk of NIL for Queen as he is basically the ONLY priority at this point.

Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson is expected in Florida later this week to make a final pitch and at that point, a decision should come soon after. With it basically being the final week of October, and signing day just a couple of weeks away, a decision should come sometime in the next two weeks. My guess, just based on talking to a few sources, is that an announcement comes a day or two before signing day. That said, the hope for the Maryland staff is that he makes his decision even sooner. But again, we will know before the early signing day in a couple of weeks.

Julian Reese named to Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year watch list

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland Men's Basketball forward Julian Reese was named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List in an announcement by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday. Reese is one of only two forwards in the Big Ten to be named to the preseason watch list.

This is the third-straight year that a Terrapin forward has featured on the Malone Award preseason watch list, with fifth-year forward Donta Scott named to the watch-list in consecutive years. Including Scott, Reese joins a list of four Terrapin forwards that have been named to the Malone award watch list with Jalen Smith (2019-20) and Jake Layman (2014-15).

Earlier this month, Reese was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Reese is coming off a sophomore campaign that saw the Baltimore native earn honorable mention All-Big Ten honors after the 2022-23 season. Reese averaged 11.4 points per game and a team high 7.2 rebounds per game a season ago. Reese was efficient from the field all year, posting the third-best single-season field goal percentage (.632) in program history. The junior controlled the paint against opposing offenses, blocking a team-leading 42 shots last season. Reese had seven double-doubles last season, including four-straight games with a double-double where the junior forward averaged 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds.

Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor, in its tenth year, recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

"We are proud to recognize this group of student-athletes as the best power forwards in the collegiate game this season," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. "To be named to the watchlist of the Karl Malone Award is a great honor, and we are excited to have Karl's unique perspective alongside our selection committee each year."

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds beginning Friday, October 27. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Karl Malone Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2024 Karl Malone Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five.

WBB: Frese welcomes Terp alum, WNBA All-Star Brionna Jones to staff

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Head coach Brenda Frese welcomed Maryland women’s basketball alumna Brionna Jones to her staff as the Director of Player Personnel for the 2023-24 season Monday.

Jones, a 2017 graduate of Maryland, currently plays in the WNBA for the Connecticut Sun. She suffered a ruptured achilles tendon this past June. Prior to the injury, she averaged a career-best 15.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game. A two-time WNBA All Star, Jones was named the WNBA Sixth Player of the Year in 2022 and the WNBA Most Improved Player in 2021.

"We are thrilled to welcome Pro Terp Brionna Jones back home to her Maryland family as our Director of Player Personnel,” Frese said. “What an incredible opportunity for us to be able to utilize an All Star and pro in our program. Our student-athletes will be able to gain so many valuable insights from her. It's a GREAT day to be a Terp!"

Jones played for the Terrapins from 2013-2017, helping the Terps to back-to-back Final Fours in 2014 and 2015. She was also a key factor in helping Maryland win three straight Big Ten regular season and tournament titles in its first three years in the league.

Jones’ career field goal percentage of 65.0 percent set a Big Ten record. She is currently tied with Vicky Bullett for No. 7 in the Maryland record books in scoring with 1,928 career points. She is No. 3 in program history in rebounds with 1,209.

“I am very excited to be able to come back to the University of Maryland and help out the team this upcoming season,” Jones said. “I am looking forward to getting a chance to work with and get to know the amazing young women I have gotten to watch from afar over the last few years. I am thankful to be able to get my first insight into the coaching side of basketball at my alma mater working with Coach Frese, and I cannot wait to get started!”

Head coach Brenda Frese welcomes back Preseason All-Big Ten honoree Shyanne Sellers, key returners Faith Masonius, Lavender Briggs, Brinae Alexander and Bri McDaniel from last year's Elite Eight squad. Maryland also welcomes five newcomers in NC State graduate transfer Jakia Brown-Turner and incoming freshmen Summer Bostock, Hawa Doumbouya, Emily Fisher and Riley Nelson. Emma Chardon and Allie Kubek will return from injuries.

The Terrapins will officially open the 2023-24 season on Monday, Nov. 6 with a matchup vs. Harvard at the XFINITY Center.

Tagovailoa named finalist for William V. Campbell Trophy

IRVING, Texas – University of Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has been selected as a finalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy®, given annually to the premier scholar-athlete that is the absolute best in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

Tagovailoa is one of just 16 finalists that were selected from a record number of 201 semifinalists nationwide from among all NCAA divisions and the NAIA. He is just the second NFF National Scholar-Athlete in Maryland’s history and the first since Jonathan Claiborne in 1977. Tagovailoa is also one of only three Big Ten players up for the award (Olu Fashanu, Penn State & Zak Zinter, Michigan).

The record-setting quarterback has helped transcend Maryland football over his four year career as a Terp where he holds every career and single-season passing record, all while excelling in the classroom with a 3.61 GPA.

A 2021 CSC Academic All-District pick and a 2022 Academic All-Big Ten selection, Tagovailoa graduated last December, earning a degree in Family Science. He is currently working towards his master’s degree in African American studies.

Tagovailoa has also shown exemplary leadership and eagerness to make a positive impact in the community. He was voted by his teammates as one of the team captains at the conclusion of both the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Tagovailoa has also participated in dozens of community service events in the DMV area, including reading to children at local elementary schools and packaging food for the needy at food shelters.

On the field, Tagovailoa has led Maryland to back-to-back bowl wins in 2021 & 2022, marking the first consecutive postseason wins for the program in 20 years. He is also a three-time All-Big Ten pick and a two-time Polynesian College Football Player of the Year finalist.

The redshirt senior has set Maryland career records for passing yards (9,805), passing touchdowns (67), total touchdowns (79), completions (824), completion percentage (66.7), 300-yard passing games (14), passing efficiency (146.4) and total offense (10,076). This season, he stands top-two in the Big Ten and top-25 in the FBS in passing yards (1,926), passing TDs (16) and points responsible for (122). He leads the Big Ten and is top-30 in the FBS in total offense (287.0 per game) as well.

Tagovailoa currently stands fifth all-time in Big Ten history in completion percentage (66.7), eighth in passing yards (9,805) and 12th in passing touchdowns (67).

The finalists will travel to the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for the 65th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on December 5, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports.

Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 34th Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000. Click here for more information on the Awards Dinner, including options to purchase tickets online, special travel rates to the event from Delta Air Lines and room rates at the ARIA.

“We are extremely proud to announce the finalists for this year’s Campbell Trophy®,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning, whose sons Peyton (Campbell Trophy® recipient) and Eli were NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “These young men have an unrelenting commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives, and they represent all that is right in college football. As strong leaders in the vein of the trophy’s namesake Bill Campbell, they all serve as living examples that the ‘Future For Football’ is bright. We are excited to honor their hard work and outstanding leadership with postgraduate scholarships.”

Submitted by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the Campbell Trophy® must be either a senior player who will complete his final year of eligibility during the 2023 season or be a graduated player who has been enrolled in school at least three (3) years (even if he has remaining eligibility); must have minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale; must have outstanding football ability as a starter/significant contributor; and must have exhibited exemplary leadership on the field, in the classroom and within the community.

“The NFF Awards Committee did an excellent job in selecting this year’s National Scholar-Athletes,” said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. “Chosen from a record-breaking number of semifinalists, the finalists have undoubtedly distinguished themselves as some of the best student-athletes in the country. Each of these men is a leader on and off the field, and we know that they have only begun to reach their potential.”

Northwestern Line

Opening as a 13 point favorite on the road.

Friendly reminder that Mike Locklsley is 0-6 in his career coming off a bye week.

The average margin of defeat in those 6 games is 27 points

In the four games at Maryland, the average margin of defeat is 37 points. (That's right Fanboi Cultists, he did "better" at New Mexico which we cannot count against him coming off a bye than here.)

Last year we lost to a Wisconsin team with an interim Head Coach by 13 points on the road.

Current gameday forecast: Cloudy skies. Slight chance of a rain shower. High 52. Winds NE at 10 to 15 mph.
