Locksley named to Bear Bryant Coach of the Year watchlist

HOUSTON, TX -- Maryland head coach Michael Locksley has been named to the American Heart Association's 2023 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award watch list.

Locksley, who has led the Terps to their second consecutive 5-2 start to the season, is one of 26 coaches nationally and four coaches from the Big Ten who have been named to the watch list. The award is given each January to a college football coach for contributions that make the sport better for athletes and fans alike by demonstrating grit, integrity and a winning approach to coaching and life – both on and off the field.

In his fifth year as the Terrapins head coach, Locksley and the Terps are only one win away from reaching their third-straight bowl game for the first time since 2006-08. Locksley leads a team that stands top three in the Big Ten in total offense, passing offense, turnover margin, turnovers gained, and both third and fourth down conversion percentage. The Terps started 5-0 this season for the first time since 2001.

The 38th annual Coach of the Year award winner will be announced live from Houston's Post Oak Hotel on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. The watch list, finalists and Coach of the Year recipient are voted on by the National Sports Media Association, the Bryant Awards' Executive Leadership Team and the Bryant Family.

In addition to the Coach of the Year, the Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards will also present Conference Coach of the Year Awards from each of the Power Five collegiate athletic conferences.

WBB: Brown-Turner named to Miller Award watch list

SPRINGFIELD, MASS – Graduate transfer Jakia Brown-Turner of the 14th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List Wednesday. The Miller Award is given to the nation's top small forward in women's college basketball.

Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the annual award, in its seventh year, recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

Brown-Turner, a 6-0 guard from Oxon Hill, Md., played four seasons at NC State, where she was a First Team All-ACC honoree and earned AP Honorable Mention honors in 2021. She averaged 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists as she started 123 of 124 career games for the Wolfpack. Brown-Turner helped NC State to three straight ACC titles (2020, 2021, 2022), an Elite Eight (2022) and a Sweet Sixteen (2021).

Brown-Turner, a Family Science major, scored 1,273 career points with 159 three-pointers made and 246 career assists. She scored in double figures in 16 games last year and in 67 career games. Brown-Turner scored 17 points to help the Wolfpack to a win at then-No. 10 Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge back in December. In the Wolfpack's Elite Eight run in 2022, Brown-Turner scored a season-high 20 points in the Elite Eight game vs. UConn, including a game-tying three to force overtime.

Men’s hoops media day

Today is men’s hoops media day on campus and Kevin Willard just had his presser.

A couple of noteworthy things he said:

He and Cooley had initially agreed to start an annual series with G’town this year but there was a scheduling issue on Maryland’s end. Said it isn’t 100% done for next year and he wants to get a couple more rounds of golf and dinners out of Cooley first, but it should happen starting next year.

He also said that Maryland will be playing in next year’s Empire Classic. This year’s event features Indiana, UConn, Texas and Louisville. One can only hope they will have that loaded of a field next year.

New Predictions.

To start off, I don’t think the sky is falling and yesterday’s game is not the end of the world. That said, I have now seen a large enough sample size to change my opinion on the rest of the season. My new prediction is that Maryland will finish 7-5. The team is really a one man show on offense; Taulia. If he plays poorly or average or good, that’s how the team will play overall. We beat some bad teams this year (and we should have), but now that we are playing superior teams (OSU) and teams with good coaches (Illinois), our holes are being exposed (undisciplined defense, lackluster running game, and a RT who should be playing D-III, to name just a quick few things.

What do other people predict?

I think we’ll lose to UM, PSU, and either Nebraska or Rutgers.

I think the team can get better, and I’m not anti-locksley. I just don’t see much improvement this year over last year except on paper. Taulia doesn’t seem markedly better than he was last year, the OL is worse, the WRs drop too many balls, the safeties are good but the CBs are average. Nothing wrong with average, but not anything special. LBs are really good (Gotay, Hyppollte, Barham). Though I don’t think Barham is as good as last year. DL still doesn’t get you the run stops needed at the right time. Last but not least, the play calling on O and D has not improved. It should have, and on paper we upgraded coaches, but that hasn’t translated.

Snap Counts & PFF Grades: Illinois

Despite losing the game, the team actually graded out pretty well.

Tagovailoa and Gotay both graded out individually in the 80s. And the pass rush grade was the highest it has been all season.

Also, Hemby had his second-highest grade of the season. Finally, found it a bit surprising to see that Coley Jr. played the most snaps among the CBs. More at the link below.

KenPom preseason rankings

The KenPom preseason rankings are out and the Terps come in as the No. 22-ranked team in the country. Obviously, these rankings are a bit different than all the other preseason rankings as they are analytics based, accounting for the % of scoring returning, past performance of transfers, freshman rankings, etc. As of right now, they would play 11 games vs. teams in the top 40. They played 12 regular season games vs. top 40 teams a season ago.

Future Schedules

Someone somewhere already posted their long-range predictions. Unless we get a new OC and unless Locksley gets a big shot of common-sense football the future IMHO is going to be rough.

2024, 4-8

2025 4-8

2026 3-8, missing a game

2027 2-10........time to give Locksley an extension.

Of course, there are probably several toss ups each year, but just based on the poor coaching at the UMD it all looks plausible.
