***Towson Game Thread***

We're about 25 minutes away from kickoff between the Terps and Towson Tigers in College Park to open the 2023 season.

Towson will be led by first-year head coach Pete Shinnick, who previously won a national title at the DII level. Their big-play guy is punt returner D'Ago Hunter, who is a preseason All-American return man.

The Terps will be looking to build on the past two seasons in which they won 7 and 8 games and had back-to-back bowl wins.

The offense will be led once again by Taulia Tagovailoa with a loaded skill group, but they will start an inexperienced offensive line that will need to gel in a hurry.

Defensively, the d-line is completely revamped but has talent, although not very deep. The linebackers and Jaishawn Barham willl likely lead the defense while the safety group, led by returning starters Beau Brade and Dante Trader should also be a plus.

Per the injury report, new right tackle Gottlieb Ayedze will not suit up today so we will have to wait at least another week to see him play. That's the most significant injury of the 8 guys who are out today.

Towson predictions

We are officially 24 hours out from the start of the 2023 season as the Terps are set to host the in-state Towson Tigers for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Tigers are led by first-year head coach Pete Shinnick, who has had a lot of success at the DII level, but basically has zero experience as a D1 coach, with the exception of a couple years as a grad assistant decades ago.

As for the roster, they don't return much from a team that finished just 6-5 a season ago. QB Ty Pigrome is gone and the expected starter has just one game under his belt before he got injured last season. They do return a LB who was a finalist for FCS freshman of the year last season as well as a wideout who was CAA rookie of the week multiple times. But the Big Ten is an entirely different level.

The one area where they could be a problem is in the punt return game, where they have D'Ago Hunter, who is a preseason All-American PR.

But I don't expect any of that to be enough for Towson to hang with the Terps. Maryland wins in a cake walk.

Shedeur Sanders set to commit

I know I mentioned Maryland could end up having a very good shot with Texas QB and son of Neon Deion, Shedeur Sanders, but he is set to announce tonight and from what I can gather he won't be picking the Terps.

Louisville seemed likely but at this point, I'm not even sure if he's a take for the Cards. Florida Atlantic is picking up some steam and that would make some sense, as Sanders is very likely transferring to IMG from what I'm hearing as it sounds like they might not be playing high school football in Texas this fall.

Ok, its time to predict how many games the Terps will win this year. I've gone on record, I think this schedule sets up nicely for them to win 9 games. The two games I think make or break their chances of getting to 9 are Week 4 at Michigan State and the game at Nebraska. Well we already saw last night, Nebraska still stinks. And as I've mentioned before, after losing their QB and best WR, I don't see Michigan State doing much damage this year, either.

So I'm going to say 9 wins. With that said, I think anything less than 7 wins this season is a massive disappointment. There's just too much talent and too many winnable games to not win at least 7 games.

I'm back!

After spending the summer on two new sites I have come back. One site had a special for $2.50 per month so I had to give them a shot. The other is more like this place with posters I remember from the old days. Now I'm on three sites to get the insight scope on UMD sports. After a recent visit to the Washington Hospital Center-Medstar, I'm not going to deny myself the pleasure of your company. I'm doing fine and my cardiologists hunch probably saved my life.

Terps by 50 plus over the toothless tigers of Towson.

Rivals recruiting buzz: Terps have big visit on tap for this weekend

Week 1 and the Terps will be hosting a local Rivals100 DL in Concordia's Ernest Willor, who transferred back to the the Baltimore area this offseason after previously being at IMG Academy. It goes without saying, this is a huge recruitment on a national scale, but the Terps seem to have a real shot here, especially having him back home in the area. Getting him on campus this weekend is a real coup and gives the Terps a real chance to position themselves in a good spot heading into the season. More at the link below.

Upcoming football injury report....

With the new league rules, we'll get an 'official' football injury report on Saturdays now ahead of kickoff. I'm not sure how valuable they will actually be unless a guy is ruled completely out for the season, but they will exist none the less.

As for any Maryland Week 1 injuries, the Terps do have a couple of key guys banged up heading into the opener.

Frostburg transfer Gottlieb Ayedze did not run with the starting unit at practice yesterday and it sounds like he is suffering from a minor injury that happened earlier during fall camp. Ayedze was expected to hold down that right tackle spot with Glaze sliding over to left tackle. Glaze is still expected to hold down the LT spot, but walk-on Conor Fagan was seen running with the starters at yesterday's practice. We'll see if Ayedze's absence is just precautionary or if he actually misses the opener, but I still expect him to be the long-term starter at RT.

The other key injured player is cornerback Gavin Gibson. While technically not a full-time starter, he is a key part of the CB rotation that can, and will, play the nickel spot. He will possibly miss Saturday's game and I'd suspect we will see more of Lionell Whittaker in his place. But again, expect Gibson back healthy sooner than later and back in the starting lineup.

One other note on the o-line, again, Elon/Duke transfer Mike Purcell looks like he will be the starting center when they take the field Saturday vs. Towson.
