Projected Starting Lineups

UMBC

Jacob Boonyasith (6-foot-3, Senior, G) - Averaging 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game through 13 games.
Craig Beaudion II (6-foot-3, Senior, G) - Averaging 5.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and a team-high 3.1 assists through 13 games.
Colton Lawrence (6-foot-3, Senior, G) - Averaging a team-high 14.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
Yaw Obeng-Mensah (6-foot-7, Senior, F) - Averaging 8.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Jarvis Doles (6-foot-8, Senior, F/C) - Averaging 9.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Maryland
Jahmir Young (6-foot-1, Senior, PG) - Averaging a team-high 14.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists through 12 games.
Ian Martinez (6-foot-3, Junior, SG) - Averaging 7.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
Hakim Hart (6-foot-8, Senior, G/F) - Averaging 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.
Donta Scott (6-foot-8, Senior, F) - Averaging 13.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists through 12 games.
Julian Reese (6-foot-9, Soph., F) - Averaging 11.2 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game.

The Terps enter Thursday night's game coming off of an easy 75-45 win over Saint Peter's a week ago that snapped a three-game losing skid. The Terps saw a shakeup in the lineup last Thursday, as Ian Martinez got his first start of the season at shooting guard, replacing senior Georgetown transfer Don Carey. Martinez finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds an assist and a block in the win.

The other big shakeup in the starting lineup was Patrick Emilien replacing leading rebounder Julian Reese, who was nursing a shoulder injury suffered during the first half of the Terps' loss to UCLA. Head coach Kevin Willard declined to give an update on the status of Reese heading into the UMBC game, but it wouldn't be surprising if he took the night off once again in order to make sure he's 100 percent healthy New Year's Day when the Terps face Michigan in Ann Arbor. Emilien was solid in Reese's place versus Saint Peter's, finishing with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks in the win. If Reese is to miss his second straight game, look for Emilien to get the start once again with Noah Batchelor and Caelum Swanton-Rodger both getting extended minutes in the front court.

The Terps should have a chance to get it going shooting the ball from behind the arc versus a Retrievers team that has allowed their opponents to shoot 40.8 percent from three-point land. Only four teams nationally have allowed their opponents to shoot a higher percentage from three than UMBC.

The biggest thing for Maryland is to come out of this game healthy and with some momentum as things will get ratcheted up a notch New Year's Day when they face the Wolverines.

Terps mention in Jordan Holiday Classic Day 1 takeaways

Maryland gets a mention in the takeaways from the opening day of the Jordan Holiday Classic, where Gonzaga and 2025 PG Nyk Lewis are playing. The Terps are on Nyk Lewis, Cam Ward and St. Frances guard Tyler Jackson pretty hard already. If they could land all three of them, that would probably be the makings of a backcourt for a potential top 5 class in the country. More at the link.

Mayo refs will be from…

PAC 12 but this crew (or at least the head ref for Mayo game) allowed an erroneous (skipped) down in game this season between Oregon and Washington State. On 1st down Washington State was called for intentional grounding, but down marker immediately changed to 2nd down, then penalty was assessed and then announced as 3rd down. Cougars ran for 1-yard on what really was 2nd and 18 and then punted. After a lengthy replay review initiated by the replay official the down was corrected, Washington State got the ball back for 3rd and 17, gained 4 yards on a run, and punted again - this time on the “real” 4th down. However, the game clock was not adjusted after the down was reset. This was from back in September so hopefully just a “one off”…

On the Harris twins...

Still hearing it is likely the Harris twins will sign before the end of the early period today. The new wrinkle is that there is now some chatter down in Fla. that they could recommit to UCF. As of now, I'm sticking with my prediction they sign with the Terps, but won't know for certain until later today. The rumor is an announcement this afternoon. We'll see. If I hear different in the meantime, I'll be sure to post here.

Merry Christmas from the NET

Maryland moved up to #23 after their rout of St. Peter's, but I'm confident six teams ahead of them will not retain their position when the Selection Committee meets to hand out bids. That puts Maryland at #17 in the net NET, but I think the SC will downgrade Ohio State because either they've lost all QUAD 1 games or because the Big Ten finally got around to declaring their victory versus Rutgers null and void because the buzzer beating basket happened because the refs missed the guy who made the half-court shot was out of bounds and couldn't be the first player to then touch the ball. The Terps, then, are number 16, and the S curve bids for the top teams would look like this, more or less:
East - UConn, Alabama, Duke, Maryland
South - Tennessee, UCLA, Texas, Indiana
Midwest - Houston, Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor
West - Purdue, Kansas, Gonzaga, Virginia

Have a joyous Christmas from a slightly prejudiced fellow fan.

Terps add Tennessee transfer DL Jordan Phillips

Maryland has picked up a commitment from former Tennessee defensive lineman Jordan Phillips. The Orlando, Fla. native played sparingly for the Vols this season and will have 4 years of eligibility remaining. The Maryland staff was plenty familiar with him as they recruited him heavily last cycle and he officially visited Maryland in June of 2021. More at the link.

***Saint Peter’s Game Thread***

We’re about 20 minutes from tip-off between the Terps and Peacock.

Not too surprising, but Patrick Emilien will start in place of JuJu Reese who is rehabbing a shoulder injury he suffered versus UCLA.

More surprising, Ian Martinez will replace Don Carey coming off of his 16-point effort vs. the Bruins.

Here is tonight’s starting lineup:
Jahmir Young
Ian Martinez
Hakim Hart
Donta Scott
Patrick Emilien
