MLAX: Terps top No. 1 Virginia in OT

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – In a battle fitting of the last two teams to win the National Championship, Daniel Kelly scored for No. 3 Maryland in overtime to give the Terps a dramatic 14-13 win over No. 1 Virginia, handing the Cavaliers their first loss of the season. Maryland moved to 5-2 overall, while Virginia is now 6-1.

In overtime, Brian Ruppel made three incredible saves to gain possession back for the Terps, setting the stage for Kelly's heroics.

The Terps had nine different goal-scorers, with Jack Koras posting a career-high four goals, giving him hat tricks in four of his last five games. Kelly and Braden Erksa each scored two goals. Erksa set up Kelly's winner with 1:41 elapsed in overtime for his third point of the game. Jack Brennan, Daniel Maltz, Owen Murphy, Eric Spanos, Eric Kolar, and Luke Wierman also scored for Maryland, displaying the well-rounded nature of the Terps' offense. Brennan, Murphy and Wierman also had assists for two-point games. Kolar's goal was the first of his career.

Virginia scored two goals in the final two minutes of regulation to even the game and sent it to overtime after Koras had scored his fourth of the game to put the Terps ahead 13-11 with 2:40 left.

Trailing 6-4 after halftime, Maryland exploded in the third quarter to go on top 10-9 with six goals. From there, the Terpswere able to keep the lead thanks to more timely goals, and key saves from Ruppel in cage.

Ruppel made 14 saves in the cage. Luke Wierman won 15-of-30 faceoffs and scooped up eight groundballs. Ajax Zappitello had five groundballs and caused two turnovers while Brett Makar had four GBs and a caused turnover. Pole John Geppert also forced two turnovers and scooped up three groundballs.

Thomas McConvey had four goals and an assist for five points. Goalie Matt Nunes made 16 saves for the Cavaliers.

Tillman's Take

"It was shades of Notre Dame. In the huddles we talked about it and the kids were like, 'Hey we've been here before, let's just make the next play and settle down.' I thought Kolar's groundball was great. I thought Kolar had a huge game for us today. A lot of our young guys did, Ruppel, Nick Redd, Erksa, Spanos. Those guys are doing a great job and when you have guys like Brett and Ajax and Geppert who are great leaders it helps everyone."

Set his new career-high for 3’s in a game with 8 (shot 8-11 3’s), scored 28 points in 28 minutes, caught fire with 17 points in 4th quarter including 5-5 from 3 - albeit in loss to Bucks as Giannis had 46. Huerter also recently had back-to-back games with 6 3’s and also recently had 9 assists, (Feb 28 - 1 shy of tying career-high) and an 8 assist game (March 6) Huerter’s big man teammate Sabonis (7’-0”) had 23 points, 17 rebounds and 15 assists tonight, becoming just the 2nd in Kings franchise history along with Oscar Robertson to go for at least 20-15-15. The Kings lead the Pacific Divsion (40-27) by 3 1/2 games over Phoenix and sit 3rd overall in the Western Conference but just 1 game out of 2nd. Kings currently own major pro sports longest playoff drought at 16 years, having not been to playoffs since 2005-06.

'Bama prediction thread

Nate Oats secret Baby Mama will hold a press conference and bake sale outside the arena tomorrow afternoon to introduce Baby Nate to the world and announce a fundraising effort to help her raise baby Nate. Oats will deny it all and say he was never anywhere near her, let alone slept with her, but the baby's ears don't lie.

I'm feeling the Terps D holding Bama under 70 and winning a close one, 73-69.

Not to be forgotten among All-Star game invitees, DHS named…

Finished with game-high 23 points, PVI advances to play DeMatha today at 4:30 in semi’s of WCAC tournament.

Things getting worse for Alabama?

More info coming to light in the Alabama murder case, as it is now being reported by the NYT that a freshman walk-on, who’s the son of the Marshall athletic director, was also at the scene of the crime. It’s being denied by Alabama, although the kid’s response when asked sure makes it seem like he was there. These distractions are going to be real for Bama throughout the tourney and the questions are going to keep coming as the NCAA has an open locker room policy.

***NCAA 1st Rd - West Virginia Game Thread***

Figured I'd get the game thread started early this morning. Gotta be excited, as today is, IMO, the best sports day of the year. And what better way to kick it off than with the Terps playing a hated border rival in West Virginia!

While all Huggins teams are physical and rebound well, the Terps won't see anything like the 'Press Virginia' defense they saw back in 2015. That was at the peak of Huggins' pressing style defense. This year's team is nowhere near that level. That said, this WVU team is pretty good offensively and they'll possibly have some favorable matchups with Tre Mitchell and Toussaint when he comes in.

I see this as two pretty evenly matched teams and I won't be surprised at all if this game comes down to the wire, as you'd expect from an 8/9 game. This one could very likely come down to who does the little things better and executes better down the stretch.

WBB: Terps earn No. 2 seed in NCAA Tournament

The Terrapins have earned a top four seed 22 times in their 28 NCAA Tournament appearances and 15 times in head coach Brenda Frese's 18 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Terrapins were a No. 2 seed in 2021, 2016, 2012, 2007 and 2006 under Frese.

Maryland has made 28 NCAA Tournament appearances and is 50-28 (.641) all-time in the NCAA Tournament. In their previous 17 appearances under head coach Brenda Frese, the Terrapins are 38-16 (.704).

Frese has led the Terrapins to 10 Sweet Sixteens, six Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 NCAA Championship.

Sophomore Shyanne Sellers was named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the league's media panel and the Second Team by the league's head coaches. Abby Meyers earned Second Team honors from both groups and senior Faith Masonius earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

NCAA Regionals will be held Greenville, S.C. and Seattle, Wash. the weekend of March 24-27. The Final Four will be held in Dallas March 31-April 2.

The Terps are 1-1 all-time against Holy Cross, with the last meeting coming on Nov. 30, 1997, when Maryland beat the Crusaders in the ECAC Holiday Festival in Worcester, Mass.

Gary Wortham Jr.

Recruiting coordinator Gary Wortham Jr. is no longer with the program.

This is a tough blow as he was really doing a lot with recruiting behind the scenes and this is happening right before the start of spring ball.

It also makes a lot of sense as to why they moved quickly to bring on Latrell Scott, as he has deep ties to Virginia and North Carolina, similar to Wortham.
