WBB: No. 8 Terps fall to No. 12 Buckeyes on the road

COLUMBUS, OH – No. 8 Maryland women's basketball was defeated by No. 12 Ohio State, 74-66, on Thursday at Value City Arena. The Terps are now 16-3 overall and 6-2 in Big Ten.

The Terps had a phenomenal first half, leading 34-27 at halftime. They led by as many as 15 points in the half overall. The Buckeyes' 27 first-half points were also a season-low. However, the Buckeyes sparked a 15-0 run midway through the third frame, giving them their first lead. They remained in front the rest of the way to secure the win. Maryland was without its second and third-leading scorers, Shyanne Sellers and Bri McDaniel.

Kaylene Smikle led Maryland's scoring attack with 17 points. She added five rebounds and four assists. This was her 18th consecutive game with double-digit points. The scoring streak is the longest of her career.

Allie Kubek and Christina Dalce helped maintain Maryland's presence in the paint. Kubek scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Dalce earned her 22nd career double-double and her seventh of the season, scoring 10 points and collecting a career-high 18 rebounds. Dalce had the most rebounds of any Terp since Shakira Austin had 21 against Coppin State on Nov. 9, 2018.

Sarah Te-Biasu stepped up in a big way, filling in for Sellers, who was day-to-day with a knee injury. As the primary ball-handler, Te-Biasu scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds. Saylor Poffenbarger was the fifth Terp to score in double figures. She added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Ohio State improved to 18-1 overall and 7-1 in conference action. Four Buckeyes scored in double figures, led by freshman Jaloni Cambridge's 20 points.

Maryland had a 48-34 discrepancy on boards during the contest. It has won the rebounding battle in 16 of 19 games this season. The Terps will finish their seven-game stretch against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 with a game against No. 1 UCLA.


Breaking Down The Action

  • The Terps led 9-2 at the first media timeout. Kaylene Smikle drilled a 3-pointer.
  • Maryland led 22-12 at the end of the first quarter. Christina Dalce and Allie Kubek were commanding the boards. They combined for 11 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Ohio State trimmed the Maryland lead to as little as five points (32-26) with a made free throw by Cotie McMahon. Maryland trailed 34-27 entering the locker room. They limited the Buckeyes to just a 23% mark shooting from the floor and outrebounded them 22-11.
  • A 3-pointer by Sarah Te-Biasu at 5:52 in the third frame put Maryland back ahead by 10 at 50-40. However, the Buckeyes scored six straight points, four of which came off back-to-back turnovers to bridge the gap to 50-46.
  • The Buckeyes had a big third quarter, allowing them to take a 57-54 lead into the final 10 minutes. They sparked a 15-0 run, taking their first lead of the game at 3:05 with a 3-pointer by Kennedy Cambridge.
  • Maryland was unable to regain the lead. Ohio State closed out the game by outsourcing Maryland 17-10 in the fourth.
