ATLANTA – Sophomore Kaila Charles of the ninth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team is one of 30 players in the running for the Citizen Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year honor, announced Monday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Charles, a native of Glenn Dale, Md., is one of just three sophomores on the list, joined by Oregon’s Ruthy Hebard and Sabrina Ionescu. Charles is one of four Big Ten players on the list, including Michigan’s Katelynn Flaherty, Iowa’s Megan Gustafson and Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell.

Charles is leading the Terrapins (22-3, 11-1 B1G) in scoring (18.0), rebounding (8.2), steals (43) and blocks (29). She has scored in double figures in 23 of 25 games this year and has earned three Big Ten weekly honors, as well as a USBWA National Player of the Week recognition. She registered top performances vs. No. 4 South Carolina (31 points), at No. 1 Connecticut (29 points) and vs. No. 12 Ohio State (32 points).

Charles has been Maryland’s strongest defender. Charles and the Terrapins’ defense have held four of the top six scorers in the Big Ten under their scoring averages and have yet to face the other two.

From this list, the Naismith Awards Board of Selectors will identify the 10 national semifinalists, to be announced on Feb. 26. Then, four finalists will be revealed on March 14. Fans will be able to support their favorite player by visiting naismithtrophy.com/vote between March 19-30 to cast their ballot, and the fan component counts for 5 percent of the overall final vote. The Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women’s Player of the Year will be announced on March 31.

Next, the Terrapins will return home to host Purdue (16-9, 7-4) Thursday at 6 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. For tickets, call the Terrapin Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP or clickhere.
