COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Former Maryland basketball players Melo Trimble and Jake Layman will return to College Park Saturday to attend Maryland’s matchup against Rutgers at 8:00 pm. The Terrapin basketball alums will step away from their professional careers in the midst of NBA All-Star weekend to take in a game at the XFINITY Center.
Trimble has started in all 33 games he’s played for the Iowa Wolves of the NBA G League this season, averaging 17.2 points, 5.5 assists and 3.6 rebounds. Trimble has had several standout performances for the Wolves throughout the season, including his first career triple double (20 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds) on February 3.
Trimble, a three-time All-Big Ten selection, led Maryland to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017, averaging a team-high 16.8 points per game. He was one of 15 players to earn all-conference honors three times at Maryland. He owned a 30-8 overall record (10-3 in 2016-17) in games decided by six points or less.
Maryland won 79 games during Trimble's three-year tenure in College Park. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native is one of four players in Maryland history to record 1,600 points, 400 assists and 150 steals, joining Terrapin legends Greivis Vasquez, Walt Williams and Johnny Rhodes.
Trimble capped his career ranked second all-time in career made free throws (503), 13th in scoring (1,658), 13th in assists (403), eighth in made three-point field goals (177), 19th in steals (124) and boasted 92 games in double-figure scoring.
Layman has appeared in 26 games this season for the Portland Trailblazers, where he has spent the past two seasons of his professional career after being drafted in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft.
A two-time All-Big Ten pick from Wrentham, Mass., Layman tied Juan Dixon for the most games played at Maryland (114). He capped his Maryland career ranked 18th in points (1,436) and rebounds (674). The 6-9 forward is one of only 12 players in school history to record 1,400 points and 600 rebounds.
Layman led Maryland to 114 wins over his four seasons in College Park. In 2016, he led the Terps to the Sweet 16, marking the program’s first appearance in the Sweet 16 in 13 seasons.
Layman shined during the 2015-16 postseason run, matching a career-high 27 points against South Dakota State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He averaged 11.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting .500 from the floor and .832 from the charity stripe.
