Spangler named to Ray Guy watch list

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior punter Colton Spanglerhas been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Ray Guy Award, it was announced by The Augusta Sports Council on Wednesday.

It's the second consecutive year that Spangler has been named on the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation's top collegiate punter in the FBS.

Spangler is one of just five Big Ten punters to make the list.

A 2022 Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, Spangler started all 13 games for the Terps and punted 56 times for 2,522 yards (45.0 average). He pinned 16 punts inside the 20 and booted 12 punts over 50 yards.

Spangler's yard per punt average ranked 16th nationally in 2022 and he currently ranks third all-time at Maryland in punting average for his career (43.0 yards per punt).

In mid-November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select 10 semifinalists. A national body of FBS sports information directors, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists to be announced on November 22. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation's top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards show, airing on ESPN in December 2023.

Rak impressing in training camp…

Maryland receiver Rakim Jarrett is making acrobatic catches all over the field and playing like a seasoned vet.
“We know the talent is there,” coach Todd Bowles said. “He can run with the ball and jump and catch as you’ve seen.”
“…we like the athlete we brought in, and he is great to work with.”

The NFC champion Eagles called him wanting to draft him in the 7th round - meaning he could catch passes from Jalen Hurts and only be 2 hours from home - but after consulting with his agent he told them thanks but no thanks.
He and his agent felt the Eagles WR room was more set in stone. He felt like he had a better chance to make the Bucs and got a 225K bonus to sign with Tampa Bay.
(Eagles had pick #249, there were 259 players picked in draft)
As a sophomore he ran 44% of his routes out wide and put up 62-829-5 while as junior he ran 94.6% of his routes from the slot which resulted in just 40-471-3. He will likely primarily play from the slot in NFL. Athletically it’s easy to see his upside, and with his 4.4 40 speed he is a legitimate threat with the ball in his hands. Needs improvement with fewer drops and more contested catches. Sounds like he is polishing his game with more to come…
BTW, hadn’t heard this before but he is the grand nephew of Pro Football HOF Vikings DT Alan Page.

Three storylines for Maryland football during Big Ten Media Days

I take a look at three storylines to watch with the start of fall camp now right around the corner. Despite losing a lot of talent, the Terps return a number of top players off of last year's team and have made a number of key additions via the transfer portal. All eyes will be on the Terps in the trenches, while the team will look to build off of recent momentum and finally get a breakthrough win over Ohio State or Michigan. More at the link below.

Terps land three-star QB Khristian Martin

Highland Springs (Va.) three-star QB Khristian Martin is officially a Terp!

He's got great size at 6-2, 200 lbs and put up some really efficient numbers last season, completing over 60% of his passes with just a single interception. He'll need to get stronger, but a lot to like here, including beating out both in-state ACC programs. More at the link below.

Tagovailoa named to Maxwell watch list

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Redshirt senior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has been named to the watch list for the 87th annual Maxwell Award, it was announced on Monday.

It's the third consecutive year that Tagovailoa has been named to the prestigious preseason list, which recognizes the top Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player in the country regardless of position.

Tagovailoa has helped ascend the Terps passing game to new heights during his three-year career. The quarterback has set Maryland career records for passing yards (7,879), passing touchdowns (51), total touchdowns (59), completions (665), completion percentage (67.4), 300-yard passing games (12), passing efficiency (146.2) and total offense (8,067). His current career completion percentage is the best of any Big Ten quarterback all-time with a minimum of 875 pass attempts.

Last week, Tagovailoa became the first Terp ever to be selected to the Big Ten Preseason Honors list. The redshirt senior was a 2022 Second Team All-Big Ten selection and garnered Academic All-Big Ten recognition as well.

Tagovailoa is one of only three Big Ten quarterbacks (J.J. McCarthy, Michigan & Tanner Mordecai, Wisconsin) on the watch list.

Maryland has had a player on the Maxwell Award Watch List in four of the last five years with Tagovailoa also being on the list the last two years and running back Anthony McFarland Jr. making the list in 2019.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 13, 2023, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 28, 2023. The winners of the 87th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 7, 2023. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in March 2024.

Tagovailoa and the Terps open up their 2023 season at home on September 2 against Towson.

Va. three-star QB Khristian Martin...

Top QB target Khristian Martin is set to commit on Sunady and I still very much like the Terps chances here. He is expected to be in College Park this weekend, so needless to say, I'd be shocked if he doesn't pick the Terps. Maryland has had all of the momentum since hosting him on an official visit a few weeks back.

Terps will host this weekend...

Maryland is also set to host Va. four-star WR Makhai White this weekend, along with Va. QB Khristian Martin. White has been one of the Terps' top targets as they hosted him for an official visit back in June. Virginia Tech has been the Terps' biggest threat, but they just landed another four-star WR not long ago and it is yet to be seen if they continue to really push. Still feel like the Terps are trending here, also. If he were to commit, would put the Terps at five four-stars in this class and counting.

Boogie Fland locks in three fall official visit dates

Maryland is set to get one of three scheduled fall official visits for five-star point guard Boogie Fland, along with Kentucky and Alabama, according to Rivals national hoops analyst Rob Cassidy. The Terps will host the Stepinac star the weekend of Sept. 29. That is Family Weekend as the Terps will host Indiana in football that Saturday. This is pretty huge news as it seems to signal that not only are they a finalist, but they are a key contender. He has already taken visits to Michigan, UNC and most recently IU last month. If they were to somehow land both Fland and Queen, you'd possibly be looking at the one of the best Maryland recruiting classes of all-time with both five-stars ranked inside the top 20.
