Six Terps earn All-Big Ten honors on offense

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Redshirt junior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has been named Second Team All-Big Ten and five other Terrapins earned honorable mention all-conference accolades as the league announced its honorees on the offensive side of the ball on Wednesday.

Tagovailoa was voted a second team selection by the coaches, while the media selected him to the honorable mention team. Other Terps voted Honorable Mention All-Big Ten include offensive lineman Jaelyn Duncan (media & coaches), tight end Corey Dyches (media), offensive lineman DJ Glaze (coaches), running back Roman Hemby (media & coaches) and wide receiver Rakim Jarrett (media & coaches).

The six total selections on the offensive side of the ball tie for the most since Maryland joined the Big Ten (2021).

Tagovailoa completed 243 of his 354 pass attempts for 2,787 yards and 17 touchdowns during his redshirt junior season. The quarterback ranks second in the Big Ten in completions and completion percentage (68.6), and third in passing yards. Tagovailoa has rewritten Maryland’s record books, as he’s now the program leader in career touchdown passes (50), career passing yards (7,658), total offense (7,843) and 300-yard passing games (12).

Duncan, now a three-time Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, has 38 career starts in a Terrapin uniform. He’s blocked for a Maryland passing offense that ranks third in the Big Ten by averaging 259.3 yards per game in the air. Duncan was selected to participate in the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Dyches has 35 receptions for 449 yards and three touchdowns on the year, all of which rank Top 25 in the Big ten. The junior, who has a reception in 14 consecutive games, posted Maryland’s longest reception of the year when he hauled in a 68-yard touchdown catch against Purdue.

Glaze has started every game for the Terps this season, 11 at right tackle and one at left tackle. The redshirt sophomore is the second highest graded pass blocking tackle in the Big Ten and seventh in the FBS with an 85.7 grade.

Hemby finished his redshirt freshman season with 924 rushing yards and led all Big Ten freshmen with 1,200 yards from scrimmage. The running back scored 10 touchdowns on the ground, the most for a Terrapin since 2015.

Jarrett tied for the team lead with 40 receptions, while also ranking second on the team in receiving yards (471) and receiving touchdowns (3). The wide receiver has a reception in 25 consecutive games dating back to 2020.

The Big Ten also announced each teams Sportsmanship Award Honoree with defensive back Jakorian Bennett being chosen as Maryland’s representative.

Maryland finished its regular season 7-5 overall to garner bowl eligibility for the second straight season. The Terps will learn their bowl opponent and destination on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Willard says postgame...

Says they have come out a little too casual on offense to start games but bringing the intensity on defense from the start. In the second half, brought the intensity on both ends.

Says Donta Scott is getting used to what Willard wants from him. He's playing at a good pace and playing with a lot of confidence because he's working hard and looking like an All-Big Ten player.

Liked the fact that Emilien and Reese were being physical, just need to sit down with them and work on hitting those free throws.

On stopping Ellis, they don't play that many guards, it's just him and 4 big guys. They can score difficult twos and then just make everyone else play. They can be a little tougher with Miller in and Ellis at the two, but they don't do a lot of that. Ellis has a high usage so really we just wanted to make everyone else dribble the ball.

Says tonight was the best game Jahmir Young has played at Maryland. At Charlotte was more of a combo and at this level and the next level, he's going to be a point guard. He sees a guy really learning quickly how to play the PG spot and he's going to be great moving forward.

Worked at Louisville 17-18 years ago, so it has changed a lot. Still have a lot of good friends and family down here, but it just isn't the same Louisville program.

We'll see about playing UL moving forward with no more ACC/B1G Challenge, a lot will depend on whether or not they move to 22 league games.

Proud of the staff when it comes to starting 7-0, putting together a roster that can go on the road and win by 30. But these players are fun to watch play but we still have a tough 4 months ahead of us.

Says Young and Carey are understanding their roles and how hard they have to work on defense with all of the switching. But they are really finding their rhythm on offense, but they have played enough good teams they should be ready for Illinois on Friday.

On winning wire to wire so far, its been fun, great looking up and seeing you are up 20 all the time.

El Ellis (6-foot-3, Senior, G) - Averaging a team-high 17.2 points as well as 202 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
Mike James (6-foot-5, Freshman., G) - Averaging 7.3 points and 2.8 rebounds through the first six games of the season.
JJ Traynor (6-foot-8, Junior, F) - Averaging 6.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game so far this season.
Jae'Lyn Withers (6-foot-8, Senior F) - Averaging 8.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Brandon Huntley-Hatfield (6-foot-10, Senior, F/C) - Averaging 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game to start the season.

Maryland
Jahmir Young (6-foot-1, Senior, PG) - Averaging 13.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists through six games.
Don Carey (6-foot-5, Senior, SG) - Averaging 8.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game to start the season.

Donta Scott (6-foot-8, Senior, F) - Averaging a team-high 15.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists so far this season.
Julian Reese (6-foot-9, Soph., F/C) - Averaging 15.0 points, a team-high 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game to start the season.

The start of the Kenny Payne era has gotten off to a disastrous start for the Cardinals, as they have begun the season 0-6 with home losses to Bellarmine, Wrights St. and Appalachian State to start the season. Things didn't get any better for Louisville when they traveled to Hawaii last week for the Maui Jim Maui Classic, as they went 0-3, losing to Arkansas, Texas Tech and Cincinnati by an average margin of 25.7 points.

One of the biggest reasons for Louisville's historically poor start is the lack of a true floor general. Senior guard El Ellis is starting at the point and leading the team in scoring, but is averaging 4.8 turnovers per game to just 3.3 assists. Expect the Terps to ratchet up the pressure after made baskets early and often on Tuesday night as they look to both create turnovers as well as take the KFC Yum! Center crowd out of the game.

Even with the Cards being winless, this is still the Terps' first true road test of the season. That fact isn't lost on first-year head coach Kevin Willard and his team.

"It's our first true road game," said Willard. "Obviously Louisville has struggled a little bit but Kenny [Payne] still has them playing hard. You know, winning on the road is hard to do. And so we practiced good [Sunday]. We practiced for a good three and a half hours. Guys were focused. They understand road game and then Big Ten play starts. So their intensity was really good and their focus was really good."

Tuesday night will also mark the Terps' final game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, as ESPN announced Monday morning that they challenge would be ending after 23 years with ESPN no longer holding Big Ten media rights moving forward.

Should the Terps win Tuesday night, they will enter Big Ten play undefeated with a big home game Friday night versus No. 16 Illinois.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Senior kicker Chad Ryland has been named Second Team All-Big Ten and six other Terps garnered honorable mention all-conference accolades as the league announced its honorees on defensive and special teams on Tuesday.

Other Terps voted Honorable Mention All-Big Ten include defensive backs Deonte Banks (media),Jakorian Bennett (media & coaches) and Beau Brade(media), linebacker Jaishawn Barham (media), defensive lineman Ami Finau (media & coaches) and punter Colton Spangler (media & coaches).

Bennett ranks sixth in the Big Ten in pass break-ups (10) and seventh in passes defensed (11). A Reese’s Senior Bowl invitee, Bennett is tied for the FBS lead in passes defended since the beginning of the 2021 season with 27. Finau was a steading force along the Maryland defensive line, starting all 12 games during his senior season. Finau ranked third on the team with five tackles for loss, while also adding 29 total tackles to his stat line.
Spangler ranks third in the Big Ten and 16th nationally in punting average (45.1 yards per punt). A Ray Guy Award Watch List selection, Spangler booted two punts over 60 yards and 12 punts over 50 yards, while pinning 14 punts inside the 20-yard line this season.

Louisville futility by the numbers…

-When they reached 0-5, they became the first ACC school to start 0-5 since Virginia in 1960-61. Currently 0-6, with another loss tonight they would join Cal as the 2nd major conference men’s basketball team in the past 40 seasons to start the season 0-7!

-When they recently lost to Texas Tech 70-38 in Maui, the 38 points were the fewest points scored by a Louisville team in 50 years! They made just 11 field goals.

-Thru 5 games, they had 90 turnovers to 36 assists, the worst assist-to-turnover ratio in the nation!

-We have some payback from last November, a 63-55 loss to them in the championship game of Baha Mar tournament in Bahamas.

***Rutgers Game Thread***

We're a little over a half hour from kickoff between the Terps and Rutgers from SECU Stadium. Even though they are already bowl eligible, this is a big game for the Terps for a number of reasons. I expect them to come out like this is their Super Bowl and hopefully play a really good game today. They still have a chance to win 8 games with a bowl win and continue to build momentum for the program headed into the second straight offseason.

It's a perfect day weather-wise for some football.

ESPN announces the end of the ACC/B1G Challenge

We all knew this was coming with ESPN shut out of the next media rights deal, but the World Wide Leader officially announced that this is the final year of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and they will start a new made-for-tv challenge between.....wait for it.....the ACC and SEC, two conferences they own the rights to. Sounds like this might get replaced with a B1G/Big12 Challenge, which, frankly, sounds like a lot more fun to me! Give me Kansas, Baylor and WVU all day long.

Curious to hear from Locks doubters this morning

One of the consistent yardsticks used by the doubters was that progress would be measured in part by us not getting blown out every time we face one of the B1G power teams. Between the team's performance at Michigan, against OSU yesterday, and overall record, are we showing progress? Is it time to move the goalposts again? Enquiring minds want to know.
