On the open hoops assistant coaching position

It seems like Mike Jones is the clear frontrunner for the open spot on Willard's bench. I was a bit skeptical at first with him being the associate head coach at VT and after also hearing his family really likes it in Blacksburg. But he appears more than open to a return back home and there has also been some chatter that Cooley could have also been looking to make some moves with his current staff in order to make a run at Jones, as well. But again, I think he is the clear frontrunner at the moment.

What will be interesting is what happens if Billmeier ends up leaving, also. Which again, looks like a very real possibility. As I mentioned in another thread, I think you have to make a call to Mike Pegues, as like Billmeier he is known as an excellent big man coach. I also think Dwayne Anderson and maybe Kenny Johnson could still be in play, also. One other name that was mentioned to me that could also make a lot of sense is current South Kent head coach Raphael Chillious. He has deep, deep recruiting ties to this area, has been an assistant at Washington, Villanova and UConn and recruited guys like Isaiah Thomas, Markelle Fultz, Terrence Ross, Dejounte Murray and a bunch more. Before his return to South Kent, he was the associate head coach at ECU. He coached former Terp target and five-star PG Elmarko Jackson this past season. Like Jones, he also has deep ties to Nike. One other note, he will be one of the coaches for the US All-Stars at the Capital Classic.

Latest on Hunter Dickinson...

I've confirmed that Dickinson will visit Maryland this upcoming weekend. I wanted to post something yesterday, but I actually heard from several sources throughout the afternoon and was getting some conflicting info which is why I didn't post anything. There were rumors going around that he secretly visited Maryland a couple of days ago, but I was finally able to track down that did not happen. Was also getting different orders in which he'd visit the local schools. But it looks like he will first officially visit Georgetown on Saturday, followed by a visit to Maryland on Sunday.

Some seem to hope, if not really believe, there is a real chance he commits to Maryland this weekend. That could be a possibility, but I believe it is still likely he will follow through with other visits after this weekend. Kansas, as I mentioned the other day, appears to remain a major player. Villanova, Syracuse and possibly Duke are also lurking. But based on the conversations I've had, it feels like Maryland and maybe Kansas are the two schools that have the most going for them at this time.

Hunter Dickinson and Syracuse transfer Jesse Edwards…

Some might have noticed, Syracuse big man transfer Jesse Edwards announced a final three if WVU, Kansas and Gonzaga yesterday.

Based on what I’ve been told, it sounds like Edwards is Huggy Bear’s to lose. Would not be surprised if he commits to WVU in the next few days. If he does not, he is likely waiting to see what happens with Dickinson and Maryland/Kansas. Self offered Edwards as a backup option to Dickinson. I’m told Hunter will officially visit Kansas next Thursday through Sunday (assuming he does not commit to Maryland before then).

As far as NIL goes, based on multiple conversations, it appears he is looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of between 500k-1 million. I’m also told both Maryland and Kansas are comfortable with those numbers. To be clear, I’m not privy to any actual negotiations and these numbers are estimates, but I believe them to be pretty close to what he will get.

But I think the fact that Kansas offered Edwards says they are at least a little worried about Maryland and I know there are other coaches who think Maryland could be the team to beat.

Potential Womens BB Transfer In (Just a Good Fit)

Maria Gakdeng - from Lanham, Md., transferring out of Boston College. 6'3" center/forward - about 12 points a game and about 6 rebounds a game. The kind of "transfer in" that makes sense should she want to get closer to home. By the way, for those who are critical of our coaches for losing players (football and basketball) you need only to review the hundreds of players that are getting out of town for whatever reason on virtually every school. I think Arizona women have 11 transferring out. We are scheduled to lose three from this year. In any event, recruiting and convincing transfers to join is no less important that bringing on board high schoolers. Just a brand-new world out there. Side bar (nothing to do with the above). Foul calling in these last two- or three-women's games has been abysmal. Something needs to be rectified as they are changing the outcome of important games based on tick tack fouls. Ugh!
