Barham & Glaze Named to Lombardi Award Watch List

HOUSTON, Texas – Maryland linebacker Jaishawn Barham and offensive lineman Delmar Glaze have been named to The Lombardi Award preseason watch list, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lombardi Award is presented annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the character and discipline of NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach Vince Lombardi, in addition to outstanding performance and ability on the field. To be eligible, a player must be a down lineman, end to end, either on offense or defense, setting up no further than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball at the time of the snap or be a linebacker on defense, setting up no further than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.

Barham and Glaze are two of 78 players to make the list, 19 of which are from the Big Ten.

Barham led all Big Ten freshmen with 58 tackles over 12 games played in his first season as a Terp in 2022. He was one of only three Maryland players (Brade, Trader) to start every game played on the defensive side of the ball. The linebacker posted five or more tackles in seven different games a year ago.

A 2022 FWAA Freshman All-American, Barham led the team with 6.5 tackles for loss, while also tying for the team lead and ranking 20th in the Big Ten with 4.0 sacks. Barham was a Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection, the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on October 10 and a 2022 College Football News First Team Freshman All-American. He was also chosen as a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award Semifinalist.

Barham has received a plethora of preseason recognition prior to the 2023 season, also being named to the Chuck Bednarik and Butkus Award Watch Lists.

Glaze started all 13 games for the Terps at tackles last season en route to being named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten. Glaze was the second highest graded pass blocking tackle in the Big Ten and seventh in the FBS with an 85.7 grade a year ago.

Glaze helped pave the way for the fourth-ranked offense in the Big Ten in 2022 as the Terps averaged 401.5 yards per game. Glaze blocked for Second Team All-Big Ten QB Taulia Tagovailoa, who stood third in the conference with 3,008 passing yards.

Tagovailoa named to Manning Award Watch List

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- Redshirt senior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is one of 33 quarterbacks in the nation selected to the Manning Award Watch List, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced on Tuesday.

This is the third preseason watch list Tagovailoa has been selected to this year, also being chosen for the Manning Award Watch List (best player in college football) and Davey O'Brien Award Watch List (best quarterback in college football). He was also the first Terp ever to be selected to the Big Ten Preseason Honors list.

The quarterback has set Maryland career records for passing yards (7,879), passing touchdowns (51), total touchdowns (59), completions (665), completion percentage (67.4), 300-yard passing games (12), passing efficiency (146.2) and total offense (8,067). His current career completion percentage is the best of any Big Ten quarterback all-time with a minimum of 875 pass attempts.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.

Inclusion on the Watch List is not necessary for the quarterbacks to be selected for the honor. Transfers and other newcomers at schools were not eligible for the preseason Watch List, but additional quarterbacks will be added to the Watch List during the season. Finalists will be selected prior to the postseason and the winner will be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.

This year's Watch List includes players from all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences. The Pac-12 leads the way with six selections, while the ACC, Big 12, and SEC have four each. Two non-FBS quarterbacks are also included.

Barham named to Bednarik Award watch list

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Sophomore linebacker Jaishawn Barham has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Chuck Bednarik Award, it was announced by The Maxwell Football Club on Monday.

Barham is one of just five underclassmen in the nation that made the watch list for the Bednarik Award, presented annually to the outstanding defensive player in college football.

Barham led all Big Ten freshmen with 58 tackles over 12 games played in his first season as a Terp. He was one of only three Maryland players (Brade, Trader) to start every game played on the defensive side of the ball. The linebacker posted five or more tackles in seven different games in 2022.

The sophomore is Maryland's first Bednarik Watch List selection since Antoine Brooks Jr. in 2019.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and was the last NFL player to be a full-time player on both offense and defense.

The Chuck Bednarik Award has once again partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF) and Phil Steele Publications as selection committee partners. PFF provides detailed metrics and performance-based assessments to selection committee staff, with several senior PFF analysts are members of our selection committee. Phil Steele's College Football Preview is generally recognized as the most complete preseason magazine.

Semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced November 13, 2023, while the three finalists for the Bednarik Award will be unveiled November 28, 2023. The winners of the 29 th Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 7, 2023. The formal presentations of the Chuck Bednarik Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in March 2024.

2023 Maryland Watch Lists
LB Jaishawn Barham - Bednarik (best defensive player) & Butkus (best linebacker)
QB Taulia Tagovailoa - Maxwell (best player in nation) & Davey O'Brien (best quarterback)
RB Roman Hemby - Doak Walker (best running back)
WR Jeshaun Jones - Paul Hornung (most versatile player)
P Colton Spanger - Ray Guy (best punter)

B1G vs SEC football challenge…??

With the B1G/ACC basketball challenge no longer in existence, it would be interesting to speculate who would win a hypothetical B1G/SEC FOOTBALL challenge played on neutral fields??

The matchups:
Maryland-South Carolina
Ohio State-Alabama
Michigan-Georgia
Penn State-LSU
USC-Tennessee
Washington-Texas
Oregon-Ole Miss
Wisconsin-Kentucky
UCLA-Oklahoma
Minnesota-Texas A&M
Iowa-Arkansas
Michigan State-Florida
Nebraska-Auburn
Illinois-Mississippi State
Purdue-Missouri
Rutgers-Vanderbilt

What conference would reign supreme after these 16 hypothetical games and what would the score be…?

Next football commit…

Expected to be 3* G/T Samir Camacho of Cy Falls HS in Houston, TX who is announcing in 5 days on the 13th at 7:30 pm. He would become 6th or 7th OL commit (19th overall commit) depending on if Hershey is OL or DL and that could fill the last spot for O-line commits in the class:
-Camacho G/T
-Howerton T
-Davis T
-Robsock T
-McMonigle T
-Thompson T
-Hershey T/DL (think going to play DL)
I thought incoming freshman TE AJ Szymanski’s brother Trevor, a 3* OT in HS who is forecasted to shift to IOL in college, would join the class - we were his 1st D1 offer - maybe he becomes 7th OL commit later, especially if Hershey plays DL and not OL.

SWAG Sweet 16

East - Duke, Tennessee, Texas, Maryland
South - Purdue, Houston, Marquette, UK
MW - KU, Arizona, Arkansas, Creighton
West - Michigan St., UConn, Gonzaga, UNC

Lest you think about criticizing the projection, when was the last time the SWAG method (statistical wild ass guess)
was wrong?

Most of the 16 teams above took international exhibition tours, and only one team, Kansas, lost a game. Maryland's average victory, almost 45 points per game, was the best by far.

The latest on top Terp targets from the Under Armour Elite 24

The annual Under Armour Elite 24 began this week in Atlanta and a few top Terp targets are participating, including Derik Queen, Khani Rooths and Tyler Jackson.

On Queen, the latest I'm hearing is that the Terps are still the team to beat. In a bit of a shocking move, it looks like Flory Bidunga is going to commit to Auburn this weekend at the event. Why does this matter? It means Kansas is likely to try to ramp up their recruitment of Queen. With that said, I've heard some chatter from some plugged in folks that Queen's camp absolutely favors Maryland, but they are also intent to keep the recruiting process open to drive up a bigger NIL deal. I'll say it again, as of right now, I still believe Queen will be a Terp, but this recruitment is going to drag on just a big longer. As for his play on the court, he's continued to dominate once again this week and went toe-to-toe with Bidunga from what I've heard from multiple people who are at the event. He's ranked 20 nationally right now but I'd be pretty shocked if he doesn't finish in the top 10 when it is all said and done.

As for Khani Rooths, he told Jason Jordan that he'll begin taking visits next month and one of those visits will be to Maryland. The Terps will have to battle it out to get a commitment, but getting him on campus for a visit is an important step if you want to land a top kid and they are set to host him next month. Other schools expected to get visits include Michigan, Miami, Virginia Tech and FSU. He did take an official visit to UGA during the summer. He's an elite scoring wing that can be used a number of ways.

Finally, Tyler Jackson is one of the younger guys at the Elite 24. He's currently ranked in the top 20 of the 2025 class and will be a priority for a number of schools, including Maryland. He needs to fill out some, but he's got good height and length and can shoot the cover off the ball. He's extremely skilled, can score from all three levels and has good vision. Obviously, Willard is going to make a run at Boogie Fland and Mustaf, but Jackson could very well end up the top priority in 2025 for the Terps.

More on Queen and Rooths from Jason Jordan at the link below.

East Coast Spotlight: Five underclassmen under the microscope this fall

A couple of future Terp prospects mentioned here. Faheem Delane, younger brother of former Spalding DB and Terp target Mansoor Delane, is arguably the best safety in the class. Will be a battle with blue bloods here, but I suspect the Terps will remain involved throughout. St. John's 2026 DB Hakim Satterwhite also with a mention. Again, one of the top DBs in his class, nationally.

As far as 2025 goes, it is a pretty loaded class locally with double-digit prospects from this area currently in the Rivals250. That includes Spalding QB Malik Washington, a trio of St. Frances defenders, and one of the top interior o-linemen at Riverdale Baptist. If they can pull a few surprises around signing day this year and get to 8 or 9 wins, next year's class has the potential to be really good.

Mekhai White is a Terp!

The Terps have landed a commitment from Va. four-star wideout Mekhai White. He is the 18th overall commit in the Terps' 2024 class and the 5th Rivals four-star. White is one of the most talented wideouts in the region and put up the numbers to back it up. Have to now feel really good about this class heading into the season. Focus now will be on some d-linemen and possibly one more big-time o-lineman, as well.

Hemby named to Doak Walker Award watch list

DALLAS, TX – University of Maryland redshirt sophomore running back Roman Hemby has been selected as a preseason candidate for the 2023 Doak Walker Award, it was announced on Wednesday. The award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.

A College Football News Freshman All-American last season, Hemby was one of the best running backs in the nation, standing top six in the Big Ten in both rushing touchdowns (10) and yards per carry (5.26). Hemby totaled 989 rushing yards, the 12th-most in program history and second-most ever by a Maryland freshman, on 188 carries and caught 33 passes for 298 yards in 2022.

Hemby stood third among all FBS freshmen in yards from scrimmage with 1,287 (989 rushing, 298 receiving), only trailing Ole Miss’ Quinshon Judkins (1,697) and Ohio’s Sieh Bangura (1,304). Against SMU, Hemby became the first Terrapin in the last 25 years to have 150+ rushing yards and 50+ receiving in a game (151 rushing, 62 receiving).

The Edgewood, MD native had two games of three touchdowns (Northwestern & Rutgers) last season, and was the first Terp to ever be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice.

Before Hemby, Maryland's most recent candidate for the Doak Walker Award was Tayon Fleet-Davis in 2021.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.

The recipient of the 2023 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards. The award is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.

Jaeden Mustaf

Jaeden Mustaf is set to commit on Sept. 14, as he announced a few days back that he's down to a final six that includes Maryland, NC State, Indiana, Florida State, Ga. Tech and Arkansas. Have been digging around since learning he'd be committing next month and it seems the Terps are in a pretty decent position heading into his official visit to College Park which starts Sept. 1.

Before Mike Jones arrived at Maryland, if you had asked me where Mustaf was heading it would have been NC State, and I'm not sure it was even close. But Mike Jones has an excellent relationship with both Jaeden (coached him at DeMatha) and his father (their time at DeMatha overlapped) and has gotten the Terps squarely in the mix. Honestly, before even doing any digging, the timing of his Maryland visit and commitment scream that the Terps are possibly now the team to beat. But in asking around, have heard everything from NC State still could be the team in the lead to Ga. Tech now being the team to beat (Jamie Shaw, who used to work for Rivals, made a prediction for Ga. Tech). Have also heard a bit of buzz for Florida State.

The one thing I think I can confidently say is that it seems like Arkansas is out. He is yet to visit the Razorbacks and has no additional visits planned other than to Maryland. It also feels like Indiana is on the outside looking in also, just based on some things I'm hearing.

Another interesting factor is the fact that Jaeden is switching high schools again, this time going to play for Overtime Elite. I think the move from North Carolina to Atlanta right after the visit to Ga. Tech is the reason for the prediction to the Yellow Jackets vs. any real info, based on talking to a few folks. It is also worth noting that a coach who's very well liked and respected in the DMV in former PVI assistant/TTO coach Doug Martin will be coaching for OTE this season. He coached numerous DeMatha kids that played for Jones on the EYBL circuit.

Bottom line, I can't confidently say I know where he's headed at this point. But it does seem like the Terps are right there at or near the top along with possibly NC State, Ga. Tech and FSU. It is also extremely advantageous for the Terps that they will host him for his final OV so close to his announcement along with the fact he has such a good relationship with Jones. I get the feeling that if Willard can knock Jerrod's socks off during the visit, there's an excellent chance he winds up a Terp.
