COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland opened its Big Ten schedule with a 71-58 victory over Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at XFINITY Center. The win marked the 600th home triumph in program history with 306 coming at XFINITY and 294 at Cole Field House. Maryland now now 600-139 all-time in games in College Park for a remarkable 81.2 win percentage.
The Terps won their fifth game in a row overall and 16th in a row in home to move to 7-3 overall this season.
A well-balanced scoring attack was led by
Allie Kubek, who scored 17 points.
Shyanne Sellers had all-around game with 13 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and career-high tying five steals. Sellers had the Terps' first double-double with assists since 2021.
Overall eight different Terps scored as
Jakia Brown-Turner also scored 13 points.
Faith Masonius scored nine points -- all from the free-throw line -- to set a career-high for made foul shots.
Maryland broke open the game in the third quarter with 12-2 spurt to start the stanza to led 48-35 with three minutes left in the quarter. The Terps held a double-figure lead for the remainder of the game.
The Terps' defense was stellar throughout the game, holding the Wildcats (3-6) to just 35.9 from the floor and 5-of-18 from three-point range.
The victory was also Maryland's 200th all-time against a Big Ten opponent, including games prior to the Terps joining the conference in 2014-15. Maryland is 200-54 all-time vs. Big Ten foes for a 78.7win percentage.
Breaking Down The Action
- Maryland led 22-14 after the first quarter as seven different Terps scored in the period led by six points from Allie Kubek. The Terps knocked down 9-of-18 shots and held the Wildcats to 5-of-16 from the floor over the first 10 minutes.
- In the second quarter, Northwestern took a short-lived 30-29 lead with 1:32 left in the half prior to Maryland holding a 36-33 edge at intermission as Sellers canned a three-pointer at the buzzer. Sellers led all scorers with 11 first-half points.

- Brinae Alexander made one three-pointer in the game to give her 141 three-pointers in her two years as a Terrapin, which is No. 12 in the Terps' career record book. She needs to make four to pass Laurin Mincy (143 from 2011-15) at No. 11.
- Alexander's Maryland career three-point percentage is 43.2%, which is third in Maryland history, behind just Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (45.9%) and Katie Benzan (47.4%).
