Maryland Athletics to unveil new XFINITY Center videoboard and sound system

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland Athletics continues to upgrade its facilities and enhance the fan experience as the department announced on Tuesday plans to unveil a new XFINITY Center videoboard and sound system for the 2024-25 season. The new Daktronics videoboard will be a 400 percent increase in size and pixel quality compared to the current board at XFINITY Center.

“Upgrading our venues with a focus on student-athlete and fan experience continues to be a top priority for us at the University of Maryland,” said Damon Evans, the Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics. “In unveiling this massive new state-of-the-art videoboard and high-tech sound system at XFINITY Center, Maryland Athletics continues to be on the cutting edge with the best technology in the nation. We continue to invest in our programs demonstrating that Maryland Athletics is leading boldly with the newest innovations and this videoboard at XFINITY Center will be the one of the best in the nation, a showpiece we can all be proud of.”

The new centerhung videoboard at XFINITY Center will be a revolutionary replacement for the decade-old sub-high definition board, which had been in place since 2014. The new four-sided display measures 92 feet all the way around by 20 feet tall and promises an immersive experience for all arena spectators. The expanded canvas allows for greater flexibility when displaying in-game statistics, and more in-depth personal player stats, providing fans with comprehensive insights during every game. Boasting near 8K HDR quality, the main display, along with four underbelly displays, will create a visually stunning atmosphere. The surface display size of the new centerhung is 72 percent larger and removes all obstructed viewing angles of the previous board.

The advanced board, with dimensions of 7,800 pixels wide by 1,470 pixels high, offers flexibility in presenting a continuous image wrapped around or segmented into various layouts. This versatility caters to the diverse range of shows and sports events hosted in the main arena, elevating the overall entertainment experience. The new centerhung is most similar to displays at professional sports venues UBS Arena in New York, State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Toyota Center in Houston and FedEx Forum in Memphis.

In tandem with the centerhung videoboard, XFINITY Center is set to install an industry-standard premium sound system by L'Acoustics. This system replaces the original sound system for the facility, which has been in place since it opened in 2002. With 106 Line Array speakers and 48 18-foot subwoofers, this system ensures top-notch audio quality, endorsed by marquee arenas in the United States. Tailored for basketball games, Olympic sports, and special events, the L'Acoustics sound system completes the XFINITY Center's commitment to delivering a premium and immersive entertainment experience.

The unveiling of the plans for the new videoboard and sound system at XFINITY Center continue Maryland Athletics’ commitment to upgrades with its venues and facilities. Since June of 2021, the following enhancements have taken place under Evans:
  • Opening of Jones-Hill House, home of Maryland Football
  • Construction of new state-of-the-art 1080p HDR videoboard and upgraded audio system at SECU Stadium
  • Installation of new LED state-of-the-art lighting systems at SECU Stadium, Bob Turtle Smith Stadium and the Maryland Softball Stadium
  • Construction of a new broadcast operation center inside XFINITY Center, handling all non-linear and in-venue entertainment
  • Renovation and reopening of Gossett Hall, housing the Gossett Student-Athlete Center for Academic and Personal Excellence
  • Opening of Maryland Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex
  • Addition of new videoboard at Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex
  • Breaking ground on the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center
  • Resurfacing of the Kehoe Track & Field track
  • Preparation for the groundbreaking on new Baseball and Softball player development centers
  • Announcement of partnership with Legends and construction of hospitality and membership club, the Maryland Club at XFINITY Center

***Michigan State Game Thread***

Huge opportunity this afternoon to get a big win in front of a national TV audience on CBS.

This game has the feel of an upset in the making with the throwback 70s uniforms and honoring Lefty.

As far as the matchup itself goes, the big matchup to watch is Tyson Walker and Jahmir Young. Walker is taller with much better length, but Young has been on an absolute tear of late. Terps just need to get ANYTHING from the bench today to have a decent chance at winning.

Should be a fun one.

THE SAD TRUTH

Kevin Willard labels 2023 newcomers the 'best freshman class I've ever had'

"Yeah, our freshman class is the best freshman class I’ve ever had. DeShawn Harris-Smith is by far the most talented player, probably the most physically gifted basketball player I’ve ever been able to coach so far. Jamie Kaiser was a former quarterback and played football. So they’ve been able to come in with Jordan and really kind of embrace how we want to play at the level we want to play at. It’s been, like I said, practices have been unbelievable. We can’t go that long because they’re so competitive, they’re so physical. We look like a Big Ten team, where last year we had to really fight to be a Big Ten team. This year we look like a Big Ten team, and I think we can compete a little bit higher level because of that.”

So, DHS, Kaiser, and throw in Geronimo were a combined:

2-15 from the field, 0-8 from 3, 6 TOs, 1 assist (did get 10 boards) in 67 minutes

For 2024, so far, we have another non-offensive threat as a non top-100 commit and a Queen dream.

Who is going to score the ball next year?

OT: For you tech savvy folks

For years, I’ve been able to stay logged in on my phone to this site. Now, it logs me off the second I go to something else even if I have another tab open like MSN or Hotmail.

Can someone provide a reason why or maybe tell me what button I can hit in my settings that will keep my account open 24/7 like it used to?

By the way, the same thing is happening with my Outlook mail.

I’m thinking all this has to do with a software push the other day I had on my phone and it jacked up my settings.

Football visitors....

Terps will host some big name football visitors this afternoon.

Biggest name is Good Counsel Rivals100 five-star DB Faheem Delane. He recently came out with a top 5 that did not include the Terps but expect Maryland to remain in the mix and perhaps shake that top group up now that AAR is on staff.

Also coming in is Friendship Collegiate four-star OL Bryce Jenkins. As I mentioned as soon as AAR was hired, he was a name to keep an eye on with the former Friendship coach back in College Park.

DeMatha four-star WR Emmanuel Dyson will be among the visitors. He has early offers from Maryland, Virginia Tech and Charlotte with Penn State also in the mix.

North Caroline ATH Zymear Smith will also be in attendance. Has a laundry list of big time offers that includes Georgia, PSU, Tennessee and Texas. BC and Maryland have been heavily in the mix as well.

Gonzaga three-star DB Devenchi Arnold. Again, a DC defensive back that the Terps have been high on that they were competing with BC and AAR for. His early offers are Maryland, BC and Virginia Tech.

McDonogh three-star WR Bandon Finney will be in attendance. Terps have obviously done very well at McDonogh over the years and he's a kid in high demand with offers from the likes of Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and WVU.

Dundalk DB Keith Barnes will be among the visitors. He has early offers from Maryland, BC and Charlotte. Obviously someone AAR has already targeted.

Calvert Hall 2026 stud ATH Chris Hewitt Jr. has a laundry list of offers already, including Maryland, BC, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee and Wisconsin. He's already been a fairly frequent visitor to College Park and the Terps will try to lock down this local stud early on.

Oregon and Colorado basketball...

Was just flipping through the channels late last night and stopped and watched the Oregon-Colorado game for a bit. Colorado and Turge's old pal Tad Boyle won going away late in Boulder. Boyle has a nice mix of returning talent and one of the top five-star freshmen in the country in Cody Williams.

Boyle's roster is still built the usual way coaches have always done it. Bring in a solid freshman class but only relying on one or two of them to actually play while returning a solid nucleus of multi-year starters that have been in the program for 3 or 4 years with an impact transfer in former TCU big man Eddie Lampkin.

Then you've got Oregon. This is the new-school way of creating a competitive roster. They have five-star freshman Kwame Evans Jr. who they paid seven figures for. They have South Carolina transfer Jermaine Couisnard, who they outbid Maryland and others for a couple of offseasons ago. In all, something like 5 or 6 of those in their regular rotation began their college careers elsewhere. And then there is five-star frosh Jackson Shelstad, who is from Oregon and perhaps the team's best player and probably is their best NBA prospect.

So what's my point here?

Well, my first point is that I'm not convinced even in this new age of the transfer portal and guys essentially being free agents that the old-school way of constructing a roster isn't still the best way to win. Boyle's roster pretty much looks like any other top-25ish roster you would see over the years. With a bunch of returning starters, an instant impact five-star freshman and some guys already in the program who continue to improve and some highly regarded freshmen who have time to acclimate to the college level. Colorado has one of the top freshman big men in the country on the roster in Assane Diop but he's only played in a handful of games this season. He was a four-star kid in the Rivals150 but Boyle brought in Lampkin from TCU to play the bulk of the minutes inside, allowing his freshman to come along slowly. There are still plenty of teams building rosters the way they always have and Colorado this year is a prime example of doing just that and proving you can still win games.

My second point is that if you are not a great GM/roster manager, you need to be like Oregon at the bare minimum to be competitive today. What do I mean by that? You need to be bringing in multiple multi-year D1 starters (or P5 backups with significant PT and stats) to fill out your roster at a minimum. Even if they are going to be guys coming off the bench. Georgia transfer Kario Oquendo has been a really nice piece for the Ducks coming off the bench. He's a guy who maybe didn't have efficient numbers at his last school, but part of that was simply the coaching and talent around him. A former multi-year SEC starter, he's thriving in a new environment coming off the bench. Even their backup center was a four-year D1 starter before coming to Oregon.

I guess my point in all of this is to say that no coach should be expecting starter minutes or production from a freshman outside of anyone in maybe the top 20. Of course, there are exceptions, but that is usually a kid who's been committed for a long time who's skillset fits a specific need for an otherwise pretty talented and experienced team. This is why in the offseason I said I thought Kaiser might end up having the biggest impact this season for the Terps. I saw his size, defense and shooting all as priority needs. But even then, I told you guys I saw him as a 15-20 minute per game guy.

The biggest issue with Maryland's roster, IMO, was expecting anything from a guy like Traore. And if you didn't expect anything from him, why take him? In this day and age of the portal, what is the value in helping develop a kid unless you are sure he is a future starter? Then there is the predicament of having two guys on scholarship that you basically have no idea what they are in Chance Stephens and Braden Pierce. A lot of tough decisions that need to be made by a lot of folks this offseason.
