MBB Prospects that will be watching the coaching carousel

Interesting take here from Rob Cassidy of the national team on some top prospects who will be keeping a close eye on what coaches might be headed out the door at the end of the season. He's got Michigan commit Khani Rooths listed as someone who will be monitoring things with Juwan Howard struggling. This one would be very interesting, as Rooths passed on Georgia and there has been some chatter Leonard Hamilton could retire at FSU, another of his finalists. Maryland made a late push and with them desperately needing another big-time wing and with Queen on board, maybe they would have another shot here if some dominos were to fall their way. But anything and everything is likely to be on the table once the second week of March hits.

***Rutgers Game Thread***

We're about 20 minutes from tipoff between the Terps and Scarlet Knights in Jersey. Terps looking to get back in the win column and snap a two-game losing skid and a three-game road losing skid. Rutgers also comes into this one looking to end a two-game skid, both road losses, after having strung together 4 wins prior, including road wins at Maryland and Michigan.

Obviously, the feel around the program is different today than it was before their previous game at Wisconsin, having picked up a commitment from McDonald's All-American Derik Queen. Need to continue to build positive momentum down the stretch here and see what you've got as they look to retool the roster.

Game can be seen on BTN.

Terps will be in red today and wearing a special patch in honor of Lefty.

MLAX: No. 4 Terps shine on offense and defense in 11-4 win over Loyola

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Led by an all-around team effort with stifling defensive and efficient offense, No. 4 Maryland men's lacrosse defeated No. 12 Loyola, 11-4, on Saturday at SECU Stadium. The Terps advanced to 2-0 on the season with their home opener win.

The Terps jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and led the rest of the way as 14 different players recorded points and 10 scored goals – the first eight goals were scored by eight different players. Daniel Maltz scored two goals as the only multi-goal scorer.

Braden Erksa (one goal and one assist), Eric Malever (one goal and one assist) and Eric Spanos (one goal, two assists) all had multiple points.

The Greyhounds scored 18 goals in their season opener against No. 11 Georgetown last week. On Saturday, Maryland's defense held the Loyola offense scoreless for the first 19:30 of the game and held them scoreless again for the entire third quarter and a span of 34:27. The four points allowed by the Terps were also the fewest Loyola has scored in a game since May 14, 2017, an NCAA Tournament loss to Ohio State.

Ajax Zappitello was a big factor in the overall defensive effort. He held Loyola's Evan James to zero points on two shots after leading them with five goals and nine points on 11 shots against Georgetown. Colin Burlace, who scored his first career goal, also shut down his man. Adam Poitras was held scoreless after scoring four goals last week.

Faceoff specialist Luke Wierman added to his all-time program record of faceoff wins with 12 on Saturday. He now has 667 in his career. In his five-year career. Wierman also picked up a game-high seven groundballs and is closing in on second in that category in the Maryland record books.

Goalie Logan McNaney saved 12 shots throughout the contest, allowing just four goals.

Loyola moved to 1-1 on the season. Four Greyhounds scored during the contest with no player recording more than one point.

Breaking Down The Action

No player for Maryland had more than one point at the break.

Derik Queen is a Terp

As I said earlier, just a massive, massive commitment for the Terps. Queen is arguably the best big man in the class and has elite hands, touch, footwork and vision for someone his size. It is also big because now they can spend the next month focused on landing an instant-impact point guard and a wing that can really shoot it. Depending on how everything shakes out, they could possibly be looking for another big to add to the rotation, also.

But again, just massive, and a really good fit, having played with both Reese and Lamothe at St. Frances. Write up from Rob Cassidy below.
