Jeff Borzello of ESPN has already written a top 25 piece for next year. He assumes that all senior players will depart unless they've already said they're coming back. As you know, all highly rated transferring players have not signed elsewhere yet, so this projection may not have much merit. Nevertheless, since Maryland is included, I'm sharing it.

I think it is most likely that most, if not all, of this class follows Cal to Arkansas. Still thought I'd pass along.

STORY

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 9 Maryland men's lacrosse defeated Ohio State, 8-7, at SECU Stadium on Senior Day Saturday. Eric Spanos netted the go-ahead goal with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter and added another less than a minute later to key the victory.

Spanos finished the game with a career-high tying four goals and an assist. It was the fourth hat trick of his career and second of the season.

Maryland (7-3, 2-1 B1G) entered halftime tied with Ohio State (6-6, 1-2 B1G) at 3-3. The Terps scored three unanswered goals to begin the second half and held the Buckeyes scoreless for 26:50. The Terps received offense in the second half from unlikely individuals. Two of the three unanswered goals were scored by long pole defenders Jack McDonald and Nick Alviti.

The Terps' defense shined throughout the contest as they caused eight turnovers, led by Will Schaller and Ajax Zappitello who each forced a pair. Goalie Logan McNaney anchored the backend of the defense with 10 saves between the pipes.

Luke Wierman won 13 face-offs and picked up eight groundballs.

Maryland is 14-3 against Ohio State all-time and has won six consecutive meetings.


Breaking Down The Action

• Maryland and Ohio State were tied at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. Maryland's goal scorers were Ryan Siracusa and Eric Spanos.
• Each team scored one goal in the second quarter to enter halftime tied at 3-3. Braden Erksa scored on a feed from Eric Spanos at the 3:52 mark.
• The Terps broke the tie with three unanswered goals to begin the third quarter. Long poles Jack McDonald and Nick Alviti scored their first goals of the season and Spanos scored his second of the game. The Buckeyes only scored one goal as the Terps led 6-4 entering the fourth.
• Spanos continued his dominance with two goals in the fourth, including the go-ahead goal at 5:17. Ohio State scored one final goal but Maryland escaped with the win.

Hat Trick Terps

• Eric Spanos posted a hat trick with four goals on Saturday. It was the fourth hat trick of his career and the second of the season.
• Maryland has recorded a hat trick in 80 of its last 83 games dating to Feb. 2, 2019. This includes a remarkable streak of 67 straight games with a hat trick through the late 2023 season.
• The other hat tricks this season have come from Braden Erksa (three), Daniel Maltz (three), Jack Koras (two) and Eric Malever.

Multi Terps Update

• Eric Spanos (four goals and one assist) had his 12th multi-point game of his career. It was his ninth multi-goal game of his career.
• Braden Erksa (one goal and one assist) had his 21st multi-point game in his two years as a Terp.

Terps In The Record Books

• Luke Wierman became the program's all-time face-off winner in the Terps' season opener. With 13 wins today, he added to his total of 770 for his career.
• Wierman is second in the Terps' history with 416 groundballs in his career. He added eight today and is chasing Andy Claxton (1989-92) who stands alone with 451 career groundballs.
• Logan McNaney is fourth on the all-time saves list. With 10 in the game, he now has 512 for his career. Niko Amato (2011-14) is third on the list with 625 saves in his career.
• Ajax Zappitello is 11th on the all-time caused turnovers list with two on Saturday, giving him 66 in his career. He passed Ray Megill (2004-07) and is nearing Michael Ehrhardt (2011-14) at No. 10 with 68 caused turnovers in his career.

Pole Goal!

• Jack McDonald continued the tradition of long pole goals and tallied the fifth long pole goal of the season in the third quarter. It was his second goal of his career and first of the season.
• Nick Alviti also scored a pole goal in the third quarter. It was his first goal as a Terp and the 15th of his career. His other 14 came when he was at Vermont.
• Ajax Zappitello scored the first long pole goal of the season for Maryland in the season opener. Colin Burlace secured the second and his first career goal in Maryland's win against Loyola. AJ Larkin supplied the third with his first career goal against Michigan.
• In 2023, the Terps had seven pole goals. In 2022, the team had 10.

Single-Digit Defense

• Maryland is 123-11 since Tillman took over the program in 2011 when it allows nine goals or less. This was the third time this season the Terps held their opponent to single-digit goals.
• The Terps have won 50 games in a row when holding foes to less than 10 goals.
• Previously, the Terps held Princeton to seven goals. Logan McNaney made 10 saves while Luke Wierman won 20 of 23 face-offs to help the Terps dominate possession.
• The last time the Terps allowed less than 10 goals and lost a game was March 4, 2017 - a 5-4 loss at Notre Dame.

Conference Domination

• Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, Maryland is 40-8 in conference play.
• Since joining the Big Ten in 2015, the Terps have won at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title six out of a possible eight times (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022). Penn State and Johns Hopkins are the only other Big Ten schools to claim a share of the title, each doing so just once.

Queen and Montverde in semifinals of Chipotle Nationals at 4:30 on ESPN2. Jahmir follows that at 6:30 on CBSSN playing for East team in Reese’s All-Star Game. He is playing for Oakland head coach Greg Kampe and will be teammates with 3-point shooter extraordinaire Jack Gohlke of Oakland, who had 32 points on 10-20 3’s (made 7 in 1st half) in upset over 3 seed Kentucky in 1st round of NCAA tournament. He will also be joined on East team by fellow B1G player Jamison Battle (15.3 ppg) of Ohio State. West team features WVU big man Jesse Edwards (15.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.7 bpg) transferred from Syracuse, and B1G player Keisei Tominaga (15.1 ppg) of Nebraska, known as Japanese Steph Curry, who won 3-point contest yesterday defeating Battle in semis. West is coached by Steve Lavin, San Diego head coach.

More love for Derik Queen from the Rivals national team as his low post presence once again helped his team come back from an early deficit last night at Chipotle Nationals just like in the McDonald's game.
