Hey LAX Folks

Does this bother you, having national powerhouse college teams playing games at OUR local high schools as put together by Corrigan Sports Entertainment?

Letting our enemies inside the henhouse to showcase their programs and entice OUR MD recruits, is that okay?

Not sure can do anything about it, but I DON'T LIKE IT!

West is coached by Steve Lavin, San Diego head coach.

Scholarships and NIL

Right now, we have two open scholarships. My question is, why does it matter with nil? Couldn't we take more players than the 13 scholarships and just have the nil Collective pay for their schooling room and board, Etc and they be a part of the team? Long isn't going anywhere with torn acl, if we could find a project walk-on whi would be paid via NIL for the scholarship, another way to take more players. Would have to convince someone, but a way around 13 limit. Thoughts??

Rodney Rice officially on board

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Former DeMatha Catholic standout guard Rodney Rice (Clinton, MD) has officially joined the Maryland men’s basketball program as announced by head coach Kevin Willard today. Rice, who will be listed as a sophomore this season, previously played at Virginia Tech during the 2022-23 season.

“We’re excited to add Rodney to the program and have him return to his home state,” said Willard. “He’s obviously delt with some obstacles early in his career, but has a drive and determination to come in, work hard, and give us a boost as a scoring guard.”

Rice played for the Hokies during the 2022-23 season, but suffered numerous injuries throughout the season which hampered his productivity. He played in eight total games averaging 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per game. He had a season-high 17 points against NC State in the second round of the ACC Tournament where he hit 5-of-7 from deep. He also scored 11 points at Duke (2/25/23) and had 10 against Florida State (3/4/23). Rice stepped away from the Virginia Tech program during the 2023-24 season.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 18.5 points per game in three years at DeMatha and was an All-Met First Team selection in 2021-22 after leading the Stags in scoring. He came out of high school ranked as the third-best player in the state of Maryland and the 10th-best combo guard nationally. As a four-star recruit, aside from Virginia Tech, he was also heavily recruited by Louisville, Alabama, Notre Dame, Georgetown, and the Terps.

Rice joins Belmont transfer Ja'Kobie Gillespie (Greeneville, TN) as the newest additions to the program. Gillespie, a 6-foot-1 guard, averaged 17.2 points and 4.2 assists last season as a MVC All-Conference Second Team selection.

Changes Coming to the Terrapin Club

I was in College Park earlier tonight as my name came up in the Lucky Lotto to take part in a Focus Group for changes that are coming to the Terrapin Club.

Basically, the current system of donating in order to get Season Tickets to Football and/or Men's Basketball is going to be changed and dramatically so.

Instead of various donation levels (which only applies to football) it is going to become a per-seat donation.

No final figure was given but the figure of $500 per seat was floated out in my breakout group.

So let's say you have 2 seats in Section 25; instead of donating $2,200 for the right to spend $738 on those two seats, you would now be charged $1,000 plus the $738.

If you're like me and you have 2 seats in Section 21; instead of donating $650 for the right to spend $738 on two seats, we would also be charged $1,738, just like the person in Section 25.

And yes, if you have two seats for football and two seats for basketball, you'd be charged $2,000.

Again, no final figure has been settled upon. More information and surveys are planned to be sent out in July/August of this year and the new system would hopefully go into effect for the 2025-2026 TC/Academic Year. There was talk about a "cap" on the per seat donation (so if you were buying a total of 8 tickets, you'd only have to pay $2,000 instead of $4,000) but no talk on what that "cap" would be was mentioned.

Why is this being done? Well, the tax law changes which killed the College Athletic Donations for tickets market. Also, Single Game Ticket Sales revenue has greatly surpassed Season Ticket Revenue.

On a side note to that, Catlin Clark bailed out basketball ticket revenue for the season. If she hadn't sold out the Cable Box, we wouldn't have hit the projected basketball ticket revenue because Men's sales were that lackluster and they weren't expecting her to sell out the Cable Box.

It is also believed that the current structure represents "a barrier to entry" for new Season Ticket Holders as they don't understand what they have to do or how the TC operates or what it even does and apparently, industry wide, Single Game Sales revenue has surpassed Season Ticket Revenue.

This is a problem because it makes budgeting difficult (see note about Basketball Ticket Revenue).

Other schools have also gone to this model and from the "Maryland gonna Maryland" department, we'll be the last the B1G to get away from the old system. Apparently, all the A¢¢ schools have also gone to this system.

It is important to note that the TERPoint system IS NOT GOING AWAY. They will still be used to determine priority level, but it sounds as if you're like me, you have a seat in Section 21, you could move to 23 or maybe to 26 (24 and 25 are close to be sold out on a Season Ticket Basis).

They wanted to get our ideas on how much should be charged per seat but also what benefits could induce people to join in addition to "fan experiences" to make becoming a Season Ticket Holder more palatable than just buying single games. My group didn't get into those details as it largely turned into a complaint session about what Maryland isn't currently doing right.

Before I offer my thoughts on this whole scheme, I'd like to hear from the rest of the folks first.

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Coming off a standout sophomore campaign at Belmont, Ja’Kobie Gillespie (Greeneville, TN) has officially signed with the Maryland men’s basketball program as announced by head coach Kevin Willard today.

“Ja’Kobi comes in as a well-rounded, athletic guard who can score and defend at a high level,” said Willard. “He wants to compete at the highest level and has a daily drive to keep improving, while also making those around him better.”

Overall at Belmont, Gillespie played in 57 games (32 starts) averaging 12.9 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He shot 51.1 percent from the floor including 34.8 percent from the floor. In 2023-24 he saw his productivity jump from 9.6points, 3.3 assists, and 2.1 rebounds to 17.2 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.8 rebounds.

As a sophomore, he posted 22 double-figure scoring games which included a career-high 26 points against Southern Illinois. He also ranked among the MVC’s leaders in seven statistical categories including first in steals, fifth in scoring, and sixth in assists per game. He was one of just two players in the country to average over 17 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game.

As a freshman, Gillespie was named to the 2023 MVC All-Freshman Team and the All-Bench Team. He had a season-high 24 points at Northern Iowa in his rookie season where he hit double digits in 16 games. He finished the year third in the MVC for steals (1.5), fifth in total steals (49), and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.83).

Coming out of Greeneville High School, Gillespie was named the 2022 Tennessee 3A Mr. Basketball – the first player from northeast Tennessee to earn the honor in the 37-year history of the award. He was a two-time Player of the Year honoree and twice named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State team. Gillespie tallied 2,129 career points and averaged 27.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 3.0 steals per game in leading Greeneville to the 3A state championship as a senior. In the state tournament, he was named the Most Valuable Player after averaging 26.3 points.

AJ Storr in the portal

Wisconsin's AJ Storr has entered the portal. This was a surprise to basically no one who really follows college hoops closely. Huge blow to the Badgers and he'll be one of the most coveted guys in the portal. Going to command some serious coin.

Also in the portal this afternoon, Rutgers wing Gavin Griffiths. The Scarlet Knights have two of the top freshmen in the country coming in, but they have basically been gutted by the transfer portal, having now lost Omoruyi, Derek Simpson and now Griffiths.

Honestly, not sure I see the Big Ten getting much better next year as a whole, which could be a good thing for the Terps because they most certainly will be improved.

Football recruiting: Three-point stance

Some updates from Adam Friedman of the national team with mentions of Faheem Delane and Malik Washington.

Delane was just at Ohio State for an unofficial visit while Washington has an unofficial scheduled in the coming weeks. The Terps are in better shape for Delane that many might believe, although he will still be an extremely tough pull, while still feel good about Maryland's chances with Washington.
