Football decommitment

South Florida three-star DL Donta Simpson has flipped his commitment to Miami this evening.

Honestly, can't say this is too surprising, as he received a commitable offer from Miami head coach Mario Cristobal last weekend and they were in desperate need of a DL in this cycle.

Still, this is a tough one to lose, as his tape and stats tell me he's got a chance to really outperform his three-star ranking, but this is one of those you just have to shake off and move onto the next.

But with Simpson no longer part of the class, a portal d-lineman (or two) probably becomes one of the Terps' most pressing needs this winter.

Terps pick up commitment from Fla. three-star DT

Maryland has picked up a commitment from Hollywood, Fla. three-star DT Donta Simpson.

Simpson visited unofficially for the spring game before officially visiting the weekend of June 7. He basically committed following his official here, although he did follow through with a visit to FAU. This is a really good get, as he is the No. 30-ranked DT in the country according to Rivals. These are the types of commitments that really make the difference in a conference like the Big Ten. More at the link below.

Football Regular Season O/U Win Totals

Action Network is up with theirs's

We're at 7 on the nose. The rest of the B1G (our conference opponents this year in bold)

aOSU 10.5
Oregon 10.5
Michigan 9.5
State Penn 9.5
Iowa 7.5

Nebraska 7.5
USC 7.5
Washington 7.5
Rutgers 6.5
Wisconsin 6.5
Illinois 5.5
Indinaina 5.5
Northwestern 5.5

UCLA 5.5
Minnesota 5
Michigan State 4.5

Purdue 4.5

So four projected to be better, five worse. The question is, which of the five are we going to suffer a crushing defeat to? Because let's be honest kids, Locksley is good for at least one of those every season and I select Northwestern as the "bad team" we lose to because #1. it's after our first bye week and we all know his record coming out of those and #2. it's a team we tend to think we're better than but our undisciplined play shoots us in the foot time and time again against a disciplined team like the Wildcats. Minnesota is a sneaky tough game as that's a trip to Minnesota in late October. Even if we're able to chuck it around, that's not the climate for it (see Northwestern last year).

FWIW, UVA is listed at 4.5, however I think our 7 is an under and maybe a push, but certainly not an over though it wouldn't surprise me to see this number go to 7.5 and the Under take become the favorite. A new quarterback under center, an offensive line that's still a poop show no matter how you try to spin it, and trying to "build more"/"maintain momentum" coming off of consecutive 7-5 seasons will be a ring too far to grab.

The first 3 games will tell us everything we need to know. Another 5-0 start is possible, but I can see a loss to Michigan State and/or at UVA in the cards for a lot of the same the reasons above, especially if the UVA game is moved to Friday night. Prime time under the lights on the road for the first time isn't a good combination for a new college QB. MSU has a whole new staff and they're a wild card as to what they're going to bring to College Park.

Of the ones over us in win totals, USC is the one I think we're most likely to beat. Tough to say how they're going to do going into this season and there's I think a good chance that they'll overlook us and think we're easy pickings for them. A noon kickoff in College Park would also be a big help to us in that endeavor. A loss to them however wouldn't be much of a shock to me and I don't we have much of a chance at Oregon, at State Penn, or against Iowa.

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland Athletics has partnered with UNION Craft Brewing to launch Testudo Premium Lager, the official craft beer of the Maryland Terrapins. The beer will debut in athletic venues including SECU Stadium and XFINITY Center, and retail locations across the state in August.

Named Testudo Premium Lager, the beer draws inspiration from the legendary Maryland mascot. For nearly a century, Testudo has been an enduring symbol of the university’s history and pride. Cans of Testudo depict a vintage Testudo logo, made popular during the late 1980s and 1990s.

“Partnering with UNION Craft Brewing is a perfect union,” said Brian Ullmann, Maryland Athletics’ Executive Athletic Director/Chief Strategy Officer. “Co-founded and operated by a Maryland alum, Adam Benesch, who is passionate about his alma mater, we are thrilled to offer Testudo Premium Lager to all of Terp Nation, at our events and across the DMV.”

Maryland Athletics, the University of Maryland Alumni Association and UNION Craft will host a special launch event on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at UNION Craft Brewery at 1700 W 41st Street, #420 in Baltimore, Maryland. The event, which is open to the public, will start at 4 p.m. Terp fans are encouraged to attend to get their first taste of the draft lager. For more information about the event, visit https://unioncraftbrewing.com/events/testudorelease.

The partnership with the Baltimore brewery is also intended to provide internship and new learning opportunities for students studying in the fermentation science, marketing, and other majors. A portion of the proceeds from sales of Testudo Premium Lager will benefit the One Maryland Collective, the NIL collective that serves student-athletes at the University of Maryland. NIL opportunities allow student-athletes to engage with charitable causes and participate in business engagements, building their brands while making a positive impact. The collective connects fans, alumni, businesses, and charities with student-athletes while harnessing the power of the University of Maryland.

Supporters can connect with teams through memberships, tax-deductible donations, and corporate sponsorships.

UNION Craft Brewing was co-founded by Maryland alum Adam Benesch ’98, who currently serves as the company’s CEO. Benesch earned his undergraduate degree from Maryland’s Robert H. Smith Business School. UNION Craft Brewing has Maryland roots, founded in 2011, with brewing operations officially beginning in 2012 with the installation of a 20-barrel brewhouse and the launch of UNION’s flagship beer, Duckpin Pale Ale. Located within the Union Collective business hub in the Medfield neighborhood of Baltimore, UNION takes pride in creating beers that unite people and support the local community, and that is now shown with pride in partnering with Maryland Athletics.

“We are Terps through and through and being able to bring this refreshing craft beer to each of them is a dream come true for me and all of UNION Craft Brewing,” said Benesch. “We couldn’t be more excited to spread the word of Testudo Premium Lager through the region with tremendous Maryland pride.”

Dante Trader Jr. Selected To Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

ATLANTA, GA -- Senior safety Dante Trader Jr. has been named to the 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, the organization announced today, August 1.

College Football's Premier Award for Community Service and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports, The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who parlayed his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy embodies Wuerffel's commitment to being a humanitarian, while honoring student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Trophy's founding, and the Foundation will recognize the first nineteen recipients throughout the fall season. This year's Watch List consisted of a record 111 nominees representing players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

Trader Jr. was also a Wuerffel Trophy nominee last season. This year, he has already been selected as an AFCA Good Works Team Nominee.

Announced recently, the Wuerffel Foundation partnered with Allstate to unify college football's highest community service honors. Eleven of the Watch List nominees will be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and will be Allstate Wuerffel Trophy semifinalists.

Trader Jr. has been a staple in the community throughout his time in College Park. The Delmar, DE native co-hosts the One Speed Podcast, a podcast that addresses topics beyond football. Additionally, he helped organize and lead the One Speed Backpack Drive last year, raising over $10,000 for it and supplying over 200 fully-loaded backpacks for J.C. Nalle Elementary School in Washington, D.C. A 2023 CSC Academic All-District honoree, Trader Jr. also frequently takes part in community service events where he works with underprivileged youth in the DMV area.

The senior has tallied 131 tackles (86 solo) and four interceptions across 25 games in three years in College Park. He has earned preseason All-Big Ten honors from Athlon Sports and Phil Steele ahead of the 2024 season as well as being named to the Shrine 1000 Watchlist.

The 2024 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy finalists and recipient will be selected by an illustrious national voting committee, including a fan vote component, and announced on ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 12th. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Presentation Gala will take place February 1, 2025, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
