Maryland, Virginia announce four-game series in men’s hoops

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The longest played series in Maryland men's basketball history will be renewed as the Terps and Virginia have entered into a four-game series as announced today by both programs. The former ACC rivals will meet once again beginning in the 2025-26 season with the series set to run through the 2028-29 campaign.

The series will begin next year in Charlottesville before coming to XFINITY Center for the 2026-27 season. It will return to Charlottesville in 2027-28 with the series set to conclude in XFINITY at the start of the 2028-29 campaign.

"Maryland and Virginia have a long basketball history and we're excited to bring this series back to life," said head coach Kevin Willard. "Looking ahead, I think it means a lot to our fanbase to have our historic rivalries rekindled between Georgetown and now Virginia which has been outstanding under Coach Bennett."

"We are excited to announce a four-year series with Maryland," Virginia Dean and Markel Families Men's Head Basketball Coach Tony Bennett said. "I greatly respect Coach Willard and what he's doing there. We've played some exciting games against Maryland in the past, and we're looking forward to a highly competitive series."

Overall, Maryland and Virginia have played 184 games in the series with the Terps holding a 108-76 record against the Cavaliers. The series began in 1913 and played every year between 1924 and 2014 (except for the 1939-40 season).

The last time the teams met was during the 2018-19 season as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in the XFINITY Center. The two programs also played in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in 2014-15.

The series against Virginia also holds the distinction of being the final regular-season game Maryland played as a member of the ACC (both teams were charter members). The Terps outlasted No. 5 Virginia, 75-69, in overtime on March 9, 2014 to end the Cavaliers' 13-game winning streak. After losing the lead in the closing seconds of regulation, the Terps never trailed in the extra session in front of a sellout crowd of 17,950 in the XFINITY Center.

In the postseason, the two squads met eight times in the ACC Tournament splitting those games. Despite their long history, the teams have never met in the NCAA or NIT Tournaments.

This marks the second future non-conference series announced this year. The Terps and Georgetown will also start a four-year series beginning with the 2025-26 season rekindling another fan-favorite rivalry. Additionally, Maryland is slated to play a return game at Marquette during the 2025-26 season after hosting the Golden Eagles this year as part of a home-and-home series.

Maryland will open the 2024-25 season on Monday, November 4 against Manhattan in the XFINITY Center. In addition to Marquette, the non-conference slate will also be highlighted by neutral site games against Villanova (Prudential Center) and Syracuse (Barclays Center).

The Terps' returning players are highlighted by rising senior Julian Reese, rising sophomore DeShawn Harris-Smith, and fifth-year senior Jordan Geronimo. Maryland has one of the top incoming transfer classes in the Big Ten: Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont), Selton Miguel (South Florida), Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Tafara Gapare (Georgia Tech). Additionally, the Terps signed five-star McDonald's All-American Derik Queen(Baltimore) and four-star guard Malachi Palmer (Harrisburg, Pa.).

Season tickets for the 2024-25 season are now on sale starting at $199. Maryland Young Alumni (those who graduated within the last five years) receive a 48 percent discount on season tickets, while current Maryland Parents who have a student enrolled for the year are eligible for a 20 percent discount on two season tickets.

Tip-off times and television assignments, as well as dates for Big Ten games, will be announced later. All games will air on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with legendary Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche and Walt Williams.

Deep breaths…

So on Friday evening I rewatched Terps vs UVA from October in 2001. Shaun Hill was just beginning to find himself then, as was Nick Novak. UVA started 1 guy who was replaced by Matt Schaub who threw for alot of yards in that game. Shaun had a pick and Nick missed a kick and up to that point was largely underwhelming. Billy reminds me of Shaun but a wee bit more precise in his first 2 games this year. Shaun had similar size and ran effectively, while not a burner. Game was a slugfest. Terps won. Fast forward to yesterday…

Billy, only known before last week as an effective runner, went 26-34 253 yards with 2 passing TD’s and 1 on the ground along with the INT, vs a decent B1G defense in MSU. They only punted 4 times. The running game was lacking, but our passer did a very effective job of passing. Shaun ran more vs a stout UVA than Billy vs MSU but the ground game of those Terp teams wasn’t set up like it is now. I like Billy. They were a field goal and an offsides penalty away from victory.

The D was atrocious, but the MSU QB completed 4 or 5 big passes either while getting hit or getting drilled just after release. The front 7 did not live up to their billing and the corners got roasted. Fix it.

Terps lost a game they coulda shoulda won. That’s happened under every Terp HC in my lifetime, sometimes in mysterious ways. Game 3 next week.

Bryce McFerson Selected To Ray Guy Award Ray's 8 For Second Consecutive Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Redshirt sophomore punter Bryce McFerson was named among the Ray Guy Award Ray's 8 of the Week, given to the nation's top eight punters of the week. This marked the second consecutive week McFerson made the list and he is the only player to be selected to Ray's 8 both weeks of the 2024 season.

McFerson had another stellar performance in his second game as a Terp. The Notre Dame transfer punted four times for a 48.50 average and a long of 63. Three of the four punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. Through his first 10 punts in a Maryland jersey, McFerson has a punting average of 46.3 yards per punt. That number ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 11th nationally among eligible punters (minimum 3.6 punts per game).

Ray's 8 honors eight punters weekly who had the best punting performance over the weekend. A fan vote will determine the winner of the weekly award. Fans can vote at rayguyaward.com

The Ray Guy Award winner is selected by a voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners. Punters are evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis is placed on the following statistics; net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.

Nolan Ray named to Shaun Alexander award watch list

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Redshirt freshman running back Nolan Ray has been selected as one of 37 candidates for The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced today. This marks the seventh year of the award, which is presented to the most outstanding freshman player in college football.

Ray, who redshirted last season, made his career debut in the Terps' 2023 season opener against Towson. He rushed three times for seven yards in that game.

A Southfield, MI native, Ray was the top-rated running back in Michigan coming out of high school. He rushed 145 times for 1,097 yards and 14 touchdowns in just nine games in his junior 2021 season.

The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award will be presented at the Maxwell Football Club Awards along with several of the other top awards in college and professional football. The event will be held on Friday March 14, 2025 and hosted by the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.

Maryland Football: Terps take massive jump in ESPN FPI rankings

Maryland's preseason projections have taken a turn for the better after just one week of football.

Ben DicksonBen Dickson5 hrs46

Maryland did not receive a vote in the Week 2 AP college football poll.

But following their Week 1 performance against UConn, a 50-7 win in College Park, the Terps did take a massive jump in another popular rating.

Maryland sits at No. 26 nationally in the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI) ratings, a 20-spot rise from No. 46 before the season got underway.

The FPI projects the Terps to finish with a 7.8-4.2 record with a 90.8% chance to become bowl eligible; the preseason projections had the Terps at 6.6-5.4 with a 71.7% chance to get to six wins. The FPI also gives Maryland a 1.9% chance to win the Big Ten, a 0.2% chance to win out, an 11% chance to make the 12-team College Football Playoff, a 0.5% chance to make the national championship game and a 0.1% chance to win it.

Maryland is the seventh-highest rated Big Ten team in the FPI, sitting behind No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 Penn State, No. 10 Oregon, No. 14 Michigan, No. 15 USC and No. 25 Washington. Michigan State, this week's opponent for the Terps, is 79th in the FPI. The system gives Maryland an 82.4% chance to beat the Spartans this Saturday.

The Terps are an FPI favorite in six of their next seven games and have a 49.9% chance to knock off USC on Oct. 19.

Maryland did earn nine points in this week's US LBM Coaches Poll, making it the unofficial No. 37 team in the nation (though it received the same amount of points of UNLV, listed No. 35 officially).

In Bill Connelly's post-Week 1 SP+ ratings on ESPN, Maryland checked in at No. 36 with the No. 72 offense and No. 20 defense nationally. Connelly's rankings, which are predictive and not a résumé ranking, had Maryland 46th in the preseason with the 82nd-ranked offense and 23rd-ranked defense.

Mike Locksley is off to a strong start in Year Six as Maryland's head coach, the first season since his first season without Taulia Tagovailoa under center. Billy Edwards Jr. won the quarterback competition and did a tremendous job against the Huskies in the opener, completing 20 of 27 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Tai Felton also starred in the first game of the year, catching seven passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. The Terps also had three takeaways: interceptions by Ruben Hyppolite II and Glendon Miller and a fumble recovery by Ricardo Cooper Jr.

Guess the Time and TV Week 4 (9/21) vs. Villanova

Today we should find out our kickoff time and TV Slot for the Villanova game.

Here's the "competition"

Nebraska vs. Illinois 9/20 8 pm on Fox

Michigan vs. USC 3:30 pm See-BS

Notre Dame vs. Miami (OH) 3:30 pm NBC

Idinania vs. Charlotte

State Penn vs. Kent State

aOSU vs. Marshall

Minnesota vs. Iowa

Washington vs. Northwestern

Minnestoa and Iowa will probably get the NBC primetime slot. Washington vs. Northwestern probably an FS1 7 pm Eastern kick. Slight chance of a 10/10:30 Eastern kickoff for that one maybe on Fox if not FS1.

I think we get relegated to BTN for this one with another regional split. I'll go with Noon with State Penn as the Buckeyes and Hoosiers split the 3:30 pm window.

LSU vs. UCLA, Boston College vs. Michigan State, and Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers will not be handled by the B1G contract since the B1G teams are the road teams in those games. Oregon State vs. Purdue is already set for an 8:30 pm kickoff on The CW.
