Football visitor yesterday...

Maryland hosted 2025 Spalding QB Malik Washington yesterday. I know I've mentioned this a million times, but I love this kid's physical makeup as well as his upside and he becomes more and more critical with it looking like Maryland is possibly going to miss out on Mike Van Buren in 2024. Need to pull out every stop to land this kid.

"Grimes, a late addition to the 2023 class, announced his plans to stay home and play for the Terps Wednesday afternoon. The Upper Marlboro native is a two-time Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association All-State selection and was named the 2A Defensive Player of the Year this past season."

On Donta Scott

Should have a final verdict on Scott here in the very near future. It does seem like there is now a possibility of him coming back. If that happens, I'm still expecting a couple more spots to open up for transfers. Obviously, with Jones in the fold, Dickinson is the top target. After that, I would expect them to either target a dead eye shooter or perhaps even just go after the top available player regardless of need. But getting another experienced double-digit scorer back would certainly raise the profile of next year's team even further.

Men’s basketball to play in Asheville Championship tournament

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The field for the Asheville Championship has been announced this morning with the early season MTE featuring Maryland, Clemson, Davidson and UAB on Nov. 10-12 at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center-Asheville in North Carolina.

Game times and television assignments will be announced at a later date. Tickets for the general public will go on sale starting April 17, 2023 and can be purchased at ashevillechampionship.com.
This will mark the third year for the early season tournament which first started in 2021. Minnesota claimed the first title, while Louisiana won last season. The Asheville Championship was created by KemperLesnik which also operates the Maui Jim Maui Invitational and manages the event portion of the McDonald’s All-American Basketball Games.

Clemson is coming off a 23-11 campaign with a 14-6 mark in ACC play. The Tigers fell in the ACC Championship Semifinals before then having their season conclude in the first round of the NIT.

Davidson (16-16, 8-10 A-10) fell in the Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinals last season – a rare down season for a program which has reached five NCAA Tournaments since 2012 along with four NIT berths.

UAB posted a 29-10 record in 2022-23 culminating with a run to the NIT Championship game. The 29 wins were a program record, while reaching the NIT title game also marked a first for the program.

The Terps won the 2022 Hall of Fame Tip-Off Championship at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut last season as part of its 22-13 campaign. Maryland defeated Saint Louis and Miami at the event as part of its 8-0 start to the season. It marked the Terps’ 33rd regular-season tournament championship and the first since winning the 2019 Orlando Invitational title.

North Carolina legend and Asheville native Coach Roy Williams is the official ambassador of the Asheville Championship. Williams is dedicated to helping grow and expand the event to become a premier early-season championship featuring top basketball programs from across the country. Coach Dave Odom will once again serve as the official Chair of the Asheville Championship. The former National Coach of the Year and three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year at Wake Forest has overseen tournament relations for the Asheville Championship since its inception, and the Maui Jim Maui Invitational since 2009.

Official release on Donta Scott's return

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland men’s basketball team will return a significant piece of the puzzle for the 2023-24 campaign as senior Donta Scott has announced he will utilize his fifth season of eligibility with the Terps.

Scott is coming off a 2022-23 season where he earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors and is one of 17 players to surpass 1,300 career points and 700 rebounds in Maryland history.

The two-time selection to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Watch list currently ranks 28th on the Terps’ all-time scoring list (1,320 career points) and is tied for 15th in career rebounds (704) alongside Johnny Rhodes (1992-96). With the extra season, Scott could finish among the top 15 in scoring and top five in rebounding in program history.

With 129 career games, including 114 starts, the return of Scott provides another key veteran in the line-up for Maryland which has reached the NCAA Tournament in three of his four seasons including last year’s run during head coach Kevin Willard’s first season.

Scott will be on pace to become the program’s all-time leader in both categories as well as career minutes played. The Philadelphia native has currently logged 3,769 minutes while all-time Terp legend Greivis Vasquez holds the program record with 4,568 career minutes played.

Last season, Scott averaged 11.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game having started all 35 contests of the year. He scored 20-or-more three times during the season including a high of 25 in the win over Saint Louis to tie his career-best total. He added 24 points against Miami to be named to the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off All-Tournament Team.

For his career, he has averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds while adding 174 assists, 85 steals and 80 blocks. Scott has shot .431 from the floor over four years bolstered by a career-best .498 shooting percentage during his sophomore season.

Having Scott back in the line-up returns three of Maryland’s top four scorers from a year ago and four of the top six. Jahmir Young, who also previously announced his return for a fifth season, led the Terps at 15.8 points per game, while Julian Reese is coming off a tremendous sophomore season where he averaged 11.4 points per game which was second on the team.

Women's basketball roster 2023-2024 season

I think Brenda is satisfied with what she has on paper right now and I don't think she is adding anymore portal players. We have 3 seniors (not counting Masonius who said she will take 2 more years of play) so that leaves Brenda with slots for 3 in coming freshman and one is already spoken for in Ava McKinnie. So between the Towson transfer and the Swiss gal and Hawa we have shared minutes at the 5 spot and that allows Faith to play some 5 too. Thoughts as I think you have to make sure Riley Nelson gets playing time.

Meyers is the second Terrapins to be drafted Monday night after Diamond Miller went No. 2 overall to the Minnesota Lynx.

At Princeton, Meyers was the 2022 Ivy League Player of the Year and an AP Honorable Mention All-American. She scored 947 career points at Princeton and reached 1,000 for her career with 501 in her one season at Maryland.

Mike Jones salary

Had planned on asking for this one this week, but Patrick Stevens beat me to it. Per his contract, new Terps basketball assistant Mike Jones is making 550K over the next year with a 300K base and 250K supplemental. As I had mentioned in another thread, I think with him making north of 500K (more than Skinn was making), there's a good chance that this next hire could be a promotion from within. Also interesting that it is a one-year deal. Would guess he'll be looking for a head job again next offseason and possibly be looking for a raise, depending on who else they bring in this offseason and how the team fares.
