WBB: Terps rack up Big Ten honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Seniors Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and freshmen Destiny Slocum and Kaila Charles earned All-Big Ten honors the league announced Monday.

Jones and Walker-Kimbrough were unanimous selections to the All-Big Ten First Team by both the league’s head coaches and media panel. This is the third straight First Team honor for both and both were also named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team. Slocum was voted Freshman of the Year and to the All-Big Ten Second Team by the coaches and the media. Charles was named to the coaches’ All-Big Ten Freshman Team.

“We really appreciate everyone who voted for our players,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “There are a lot of great players in our league. This is a testament to the hard work these individuals have put in this season, and also a product of how much success the team has had.”

“This is a tremendous honor,” Slocum said. “It’s always good to see your hard work pay off, but I also have to give thanks to my team and coaches. Without them, this award wouldn’t have been possible, so credit to them. Our journey’s not over, and I’m excited for what’s next.”

Jones is averaging 19.3 points and a league-leading 10.7 rebounds per game this season. She is also leading the country with her field goal percentage of 69 percent, which is currently a Big Ten record. Jones has scored in double figures in 28 straight games this season and has notched a conference-best 20 double-doubles. She has earned a Big Ten weekly award in 10 of 14 weeks this season and has also earned ESPNW and Naismith National Player of the Week honors.

Jones is tied with Marissa Coleman for No. 3 in rebounding in the Maryland record books with 1,139 career boards. She is No. 8 on Maryland’s scoring list with 1,792 career points.

Walker-Kimbrough is averaging 18.5 points and 3.8 boards per game, while shooting 43.7 percent from outside the arc. She leads all Big Ten guards with her field goal percentage of 53.7 percent. Walker-Kimbrough has scored in double figures in 107 of 136 career games, including 62 of 64 games since start of last season. She has scored in double figures in 20 straight games this season. She was named Big Ten Player of the week twice this season and also earned the Naismith National Player of the Week honor.

Walker-Kimbrough’s is No. 5 on Maryland’s scoring list with 2,036 career points. Her career three-point field goal percentage of 45.5 percent is currently a Maryland record and also a Big Ten record. With her five three-pointers in Sunday’s game, Walker-Kimbrough is No. 2 on Maryland’s all-time list with 173 made in her career.

Slocum averaged 11.1 points and 6.0 assists per game with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.0 in her rookie season. She led the Big Ten in assists in conference play with 7.5 assists per game. In 16 Big Ten games, she tallied 112 assists with just 48 turnovers.

Slocum shot 37.4 percent from outside the arc and needs to make one three-pointer to tie Kristi Toliver’s freshman record of 59 in 2006. Slocum has dished 168 assists this season, just three shy of the Maryland freshman record of 171.

Slocum is the eighth Terrapin to be named conference Freshman of the Year and fifth under head coach Brenda Frese. Alyssa Thomas, Lynetta Kizer, Marissa Coleman, Crystal Langhorne, Bonnie Rimkus, Carla Holmes and Beth Hunt earned the honor in the ACC.

Charles averaged just under 10 points and 5.6 boards per game on the season. She started in all 29 games for the Terrapins and shot 51.3 percent from the field. Charles scored in double figures in eight of 16 Big Ten games and notched two double-doubles. She led all conference rookies in rebounding.

Charles and Slocum are the 24th and 25th Terrapins to earn All-Freshman Team honors, and the 15th and 16th under Frese.

Junior Kristen Confroy was honored with a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

The Big Ten co-champion Terrapins will be the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament this weekend at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. After clinching a double-bye the Terps will open their tournament run Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Maryland (27-2, 15-1 B1G) will play the winner of seventh-seeded Penn State (19-9, 9-7) and 10th-seeded Minnesota (14-15, 5-11). The Friday night contest will be televised around the world on the Big Ten Network, the BTN2Go app and BTN2Go.com.

With a win Friday night, the Terrapins will play in Saturday’s Semifinals at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET.
