ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four members of the Maryland women’s basketball team (26-3, 12-4 B1G) garnered Big Ten honors from the league’s head coaches and media panel Monday.
Sophomore Kaila Charles was named to the All-Big Ten First Team by both the coaches and the media panel. Junior Eleanna Christinaki and senior Kristen Confroy earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors from the coaches and the media as well. Fifth-year seniorIeshia Small was voted the Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year.
Charles is currently leading the Terrapins in scoring (18.1), rebounding (8.3), blocks (1.1) and is second on the team in steals (1.6). She has increased her scoring over 8.4 points per game from last year, when she earned All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors. She is No. 8 in the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding and No. 5 in field goal percentage (.520). She has started in all 64 games of her career and her three best performances this season were against South Carolina (31 points), UConn (29 points) and Ohio State (32 points).
Charles has earned four Big Ten weekly honors this year and was named USBWA National Player of the Week on Jan. 30. She was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List in November as one of 20 of the nation's top shooting guard. Mid-season, she was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List for the nation's top 10 small forwards. In February, she was one of 30 players, three sophomores, named to the Citizen Naismith Late Season Watch List.
Confroy has played in 135 career games, including 112 straight, in her four years in College Park. She is No. 2 in the Maryland record books with 209 career three-pointers made and is No. 3 in career three-point field goal percentage (.405). She is averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds this year, while leading the Big Ten in three-point percentage (.456).
Christinaki became eligible for the Terps in December. In her 17 games as a Terrapin, she’s averaging 12.8 points with 4.2 rebounds. She scored a career-high 32 points in her Maryland debut vs. Coppin State and 26 vs. No. 12 Ohio State last month. She has twice earned Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll recognitions.
Small has played in all 29 games for the Terrapins this season and is averaging 9.2 points in 22.4 minutes per game off the bench. In her career, she has scored 633 points, including 447 at Maryland, with 262 career rebounds. She scored a career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds at Miami earlier this year.
Small is the third Terrapin to earn conference Sixth Player of the Year honors, following Brene Moseley (2016) and Lynetta Kizer (2012).
Maryland held off Nebraska, 77-75, Sunday in College Park. Charles led four Terps in double figures with 19 points, 11 boards. She went 4-for-6 at the foul line down the stretch with a key block. Christinaki added 13 points.
Maryland honored seniors Confroy and Small prior to Sunday’s game. In her four years, Confroy has helped the Terps to a record of 120-16, the 2015 Final Four and three Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. Small joined the Terps in the summer of 2015, then redshirted the 2015-16 season. The past two years, she's helped Maryland to a record of 55-9 and the 2017 Big Ten regular season and tournament titles.
Maryland is ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press poll and No. 13 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
The Terps are the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament will open Tournament play Fridayat 6:30 p.m. at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. They will take on either seventh-seeded Indiana (16-13, 9-7) or 10th-seeded Michigan State (17-12, 7-9), who playThursday night.
