COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 3 Maryland won its first of three Top-10 matchups this week with a 79-76 victory over No. 6 Baylor on Sunday afternoon at XFINITY Center.

All-American Ashley Owusu led the Terps with a season-high 24 points -- including the 1,000th of her career -- along with six assists and four rebounds as she showed off her wide array of skills on both ends of the court. Owusu became the 35th Terp to score 1,000 points in her Maryland career.

Angel Reese netted 17 points and nine rebounds and converted a clutch 3-point play with 1:08 left in regulation to put the Terps ahead by six after Baylor had cut the lead to just three.

Chloe Bibby tallied 16 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. Mimi Collins had 10 points and eight rebounds.

In just the second-ever meeting between two of the powerhouses in women's college basketball, the Terps used a 13-2 run in the second quarter to flip a four-point deficit into a seven-point advantage late in the period, giving the Terps a 42-35 halftime edge. Maryland expanded on that in the third quarter, leading by as many as 13 points. Baylor wouldn't get any closer than three points for the remainder of the game. Baylor had a chance to tie the game with four seconds left, but Sarah Andrews' three-pointer missed and Reese collected the game-sealing rebound.

For Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese, who was honored prior to the game with the Nell and John Wooden Excellence in Coaching Award, she has now led the Terps to 81 victories over ranked teams and 24 over Top-10 teams.

The Terps have also won 28 consecutive home games, tied for the longest streak in the nation.

NaLyssa Smith led Baylor with 30 points and 14 rebounds as the Bears dropped their first game of the season and are now, 3-1.

Brenda Frese's Take
"Obviously, they [the fans\ are our 6th man. It's been so long since we've had a crowd like that and you see here at Maryland what we are able to draw. We've made it known what our goals are and I thought tonight, today we absolutely took a step towards that today within our journey. I thought we showed tremendous resiliency, especially down the stretch. It was great to be able to learn a lot about your team and how they were going to respond. And, as you saw, it was gonna take a total team effort. You know it started with Mimi and Angel on the glass, they were tremendous. Shy stepping up as a freshman, I thought she was fearless. Ashley showing she's the most dynamic guard in the country and taking over when she needed to make big plays for us. And then you have Chloe stepping out and making shots, timely shots, when we needed them and I thought the bench energy, Tai, Diamond, as she's working through, I mean just all were valuable minutes that we had to have. We took a step in the right direction with our defense and our rebounding. You know that first quarter wasn't specifically, from a scoring end, but I thought we did a great job being able to get stops and being able to allow our defense and our rebounding to help us through in that first quarter."

Breaking Down The Action

  • Both teams battled in the first 10 minutes of play with Baylor shooting a blistering 69 percent from the field. Despite the Bears' hot shooting, the Terps remained in the game thanks to eight points from Owusu and ended the frame down just 21-17.
  • The Maryland offense came alive in the second quarter and the Terps used a late 13-2 run to take control of the game. The Terps would take a 42-35 lead into halftime after knocking down four three-pointers and committing just one turnover in the second quarter. Bibby knocked down a pair of triples as part of her eight points in the quarter.
  • The Terps potent offense kept it going in the third quarter as both Owusu and Bibby scored eight points in the frame, with Maryland growing their lead to 64-55 heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • Baylor tried to chip into the lead, but timely buckets from Reese and Owusu kept the Bears at bay. Baylor cut the lead to as little as three with 1:30 remaining, but an and-one from Reese gave Maryland a six-point lead, and allowed the Terps to hold on for the win.

1,000 Points For Owusu

  • Maryland junior Ashley Owusu scored the 1,000th point of her illustrious career on Saturday. She became the 35th Terp to score 1,000 points in a Maryland uniform.
  • She hit the plateau with a jump shot with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter.
  • She now has exactly 1000 points in her career.

  • She scored her first points of the season, finishing with five along with four rebounds in 11 minutes.

Home Sweet Home

  • Maryland has been a dominant home team, especially over the last decade. The Terps are now 571-136 (.808) all-time in College Park, dating back to the inaugural 1971-72 season.
  • Maryland is 277-41 (.871) at home under Brenda Frese, whose first season in College Park was the inaugural season of XFINITY Center. That is among the top 10 toughest places to play in the country.
  • The Terrapins are 157-11 (.934) all-time in non conference games in XFINITY Center.
  • The Terps have also won 28 consecutive home games, tied for the longest streak in the nation.

Hall of Fame Crystal

  • One of her signature performances as a Terp came against Baylor on March 26, 2006 in the NCAA Tournament when she dropped 34 points and 15 rebounds to upend the defending champion Bears. That was the only previous meeting between the teams.
