ATLANTA – Sophomore Kaila Charles and head coach Brenda Frese both earned All-Region honors from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Thursday.
Charles is one of 52 All-Region nominees for the 2018 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team. She is one of just six underclassman across the country to make the nominee list. The selection committee will select the 10-member WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America team from these 52 candidates.
Charles led the Terrapins in scoring with 17.9 points per game – the most ever by a Terp sophomore. She also led Maryland with 8.1 rebounds a contest, 36 blocks and was third on the team with 53 steals on the year.
She is just the third Maryland sophomore to score 600 points in a season, joining Crystal Langhorne and Alyssa Thomas. Charles put up 610 points in 34 games. Charles scored in double figures in 30 of 34 games and led the Terps in scoring in 19 games.
She earned All-Big Ten First Team honors by both the league’s head coaches and media and was voted to the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.
Frese was named United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career and fourth year straight. She is joined by Muffet McGraw (Notre Dame), Jeff Walz (Louisville), Robin Pingeton (Missouri), Vic Schaefer (Mississippi State), Kim Mulkey (Baylor), Charlotte Smith (Elon), Lisa Bluder (Iowa), Cori Close (UCLA) and Jennifer Gross (Cal-Davis).
Frese led the Terrapins to their eighth straight season with 25 or more wins. The Terrapins lost over 60 percent of their scoring from last year’s Sweet Sixteen team and Frese and the staff helped lead the Terrapins to a record of 26-8, 12-4 in Big Ten play and their eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
This marked Maryland’s 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, eighth straight and 14th in Brenda Frese's 16 years at Maryland. The Terrapins are 45-25 (.643) all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 33-13 (.717) under Frese. She’s led the Terps to eight Sweet Sixteens, six Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 NCAA title.
