Top 50 QB and Maryland commit Malik Washington thrilled with Navy All-American Bowl selection
Maryland quarterbacks commit Malik Washington, who is a top 50 prospect, has miliary ties that makes his selection to the Navy All-American Bowl more special.
The fall was good to top 50 quarterback and Maryland commit Malik Washington.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound standout led Severn (Md.) Archbishop Spalding to an undefeated season, which included a win against WCAC champion Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha, he won a third straight MIAA Class A state title and he surpassed 7,000 career passing yards.
And when he was invited to play in and accepted a spot in the Navy All-American Bowl, it came with a lot of personal meaning.
"My dad was in the Navy, my grandpa was in the Marines and my great grandpa was also in the Navy," said Washington, who was presented with his jersey for the game. "My dad, he was excited."
Washington, who ended his high school career with 16 straight wins. added a slew of family members will head to San Antonio as well to watch him compete in the Jan. 11 game, which is broadcast on NBC and kicks off at 1 p.m. EST.
The nation's No. 5 quarterback finished his senior season 151 of 36 for 2,077 yards and 24 touchdowns against three interceptions. He also ran for more than 300 yards and nine touchdowns.
He ends his career with more than 7,000 passing yards, 74 touchdowns, 20 interceptions and 19 rushing touchdowns.
Washington will travel to the game with purpose.
"I am going to approach it the same way I approached Elite 11," he said. "Learn as much as possible from a bunch of different people. I can learn from people my age, the other quarterbacks, or other people who play different positions and how they see the game and take as much as possible and meet a bunch of new people."
it is something Washington is excited to take part in since he thought about receiving the invitation for a while.
"It was great," he said. "These games, I've been watching them every year and I was always hoping one year it would be my year to get called up and I am super grateful to be called."
As for Maryland, Washington said Michigan and Penn State reached out in the fall to gage his interest in a possible flip, but he quickly turned them down because he is locked in with the Terps.
"I just can't wait to be there," he said. "I am really excited. Can't wait to get there and bond with some of my teammates."
Washington said he graduates from Archbishop Spalding on Jan. 6, and he moves into Maryland on Jan. 25th.
