I caught up with Ath. Jacob Morgenstern briefly this evening. He's still driving back to Connecticut and won't be home until like 1 AM, so I didn't bother him for a full interview since he was driving. We kept it brief.

Jake was on campus today, along with Maryland commit Mike Viti. Here are some of the things he had to say.

"First off, the staff and facilities were great. The coaches were welcoming and clearly know their stuff. Everything, from the stadium to the gear to the weight room, it's was all high end."

I also asked about what he specifically discussed with the coaching staff today.

"I talked about everything, from where I would be playing to what the schedule is like for the guys on a daily basis. We also talked about academics and the support (players) get with that. We also talked about the campus life in general."

Jake said that the staff likes him mainly as a SAM linebacker, which is the strong-side position. However, they also said they could use him in a safety/linebacker hybrid role. I actually think he'd fit that role well. He's a solid tackler, can lay the wood when needed, but he also has the athleticism to cover backs out of the backfield and in the slot.

As for the new facility that's being planned, Jake said, "It looks like they have big things in place. From what I saw, it's going to be great."

Jake also got to see some of the incoming freshman, but he didn't have an extended conversation with any of them.

So, of course, the main question is, where does Maryland stand? As of now, he's planning to make a decision in the next few weeks, so I asked if Maryland has a chance to crack his top three. Prospects usually seriously consider three or four schools, then narrow it down to the two they really like.

He said, "Yeah, I think they are in that conversation. It's near family and it's a reasonable distance from home."

Remember, Morgenstern's uncle lives in Maryland, so his family goes down there often. His uncle is also a Maryland fan, so that should help a little.

As for who else stood out during these past two weeks - he also visited Pitt, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke and Virginia over the past 10 days - Morgenstern said that Duke, Northwestern and Virginia were the other three schools that stood out.

He's also going to probably hit up Boston College on Thursday. He then is aiming to have his decision in the next "couple of weeks," so I'll continue to monitor Jake closely. He didn't hint at what school was truly his leader after all these visits. He just said that Maryland is in the mix and that Duke, Northwestern and Virginia also stood out.
