MLAX: No. 1 Terps move To 3-0, topping No. 9 Syracuse, 14-10

SYRACUSE, NY – Logan Wisnauksas scored four goals to lead No. 1 Maryland to a 14-10 victory over Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Sunday afternoon. Wisnauksas moved to second on the Terps' all-time goal-scoring list with 156 and recorded his 100th assist in the game for a five-point game. The Terps remain perfect at 3-0while the Orange suffered its first loss, falling to 1-1.

Jonathan Donville (3G, 1A) and Anthony DeMaio (2G, 1A) were the Terps' other multi-goal scorers. Jack Brennan, Kyle Long, Daniel Maltz, Owen Murphy and Roman Puglise also scored for Maryland. Maltz added two assists for a three-point game.

The Terps defense was strong throughout the game. One week after the Orange piled up a Carrier Dome record 28 goals vs. Holy Cross, Maryland limited Syracuse to 10 goals. Goalie Logan McNaney made 12 saves. Close defensemen Brett Makar, Puglise and Matt Rahill played great defense throughout the game.

Maryland scored the first five goals of the game and never relinquished the lead. Syracuse cut the deficit to two different occasions and 7-6 at the half and 9-8 at the end of the third quarter, but Maryland withstood the Orange for its fourth consecutive win against Syracuse dating to 2011.

Syracuse was led by Tucker Doredvic (5G, 1A) and Lucas Quinn (3G).


Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps led 4-0 after the first quarter with Wisnauskas scoring twice along with tallies by Anthony DeMaio, Jack Brennan. The Terps' defense was solid as Logan McNaney made four saves, in holding the Orange off the scoreboard.
  • Maryland scored the first five goals of the game before Syracuse got on the board 1:37into the second quarter. The Orange went on to score six goals in the second quarter to cut Maryland's lead to one at intermission, 7-6. McNaney made eight saves in the half.
  • The Terps took a 9-6 lead on goals by Kyle Long and Wisnaukas with 6:26 left in the third quarter and held that lead until the final 33 seconds. The Orange rattled off two goals in final span to cut its deficit to one at 9-8 heading to the fourth quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, Wisnauskas, Donville and Maltz opened the period with tallies to regain a four-goal edge for the Terps at 12-8. Donville added another and Murphy also scored for the 14-10 final.
Wisnauskas Watch
  • Wisnauskas's four goals gives him 156 for his career, moving him to second all-time in career goals, trailing only Jared Bernhardt (202). He passed Matt Rambo (155), Joe Walters (153) on Sunday
  • Wisnauskas is second all-time in career points in Maryland history with 256. Next on the list is Matt Rambo's 257 points scored between 2014-17. Bernhardt leads with 290 points.
  • The Sykesville, MD native has tallied a point in all 60 games of his collegiate career.
  • He also became the eighth Terp to record 100 career assists with a helper on a Donville's second-quarter goal. Wisnauskas now has 100 assists in his career. Next on the list at No. 7 is Matt Rambo (102) and No. 6 John Kaestner (105).
  • With his four goals, Wisnauskas notched his 30th career hat trick as a Terp and third in as many games this season.
  • It was his 47th mutli-goal game and third in as many games this season.
Series History
  • Maryland now holds a 12-6 edge over Syracuse in an all-time series that dates back to 1927 when the teams first met.
  • Maryland has won four consecutive games in the head-to-head series, last facing the Orange in the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinals when the Terps secured a 13-7 victory.
  • Maryland picked up a 16-8 victory over Syracuse in its last trip to the Carrier Dome in 2014 prior to Sunday. In that game, Maryland scored 10 goals in the second quarter, a feat that was equaled for the first time last week against Loyola.
  • Coach John Tillman is now 4-0 all-time coaching against the Orange.
