Maryland Football and Basketball Scoop: 5-Star Hoopers | The catch on that $10 Million | Locksley Recruiting

What sort of crowd should you expect tonight for Maryland-Wisconsin? Who's a new name to keep close tabs on in football recruiting? What about a couple of five-star hoops studs and the catch on that big donation? Here's the latest I'm hearing from behind the scenes of Maryland basketball and football ...

There are still a little more than 1,000 tickets remaining for tonight, a source said. Maryland is expecting about 16,000 fans including a packed student wall for the Gold Rush game, so it should be one of those electric atmospheres we've seen so many times at Xfinity Center.

On the football front, Maryland's early enrollees arrived last week, and I expect to have some scoop soon on how they look, though you can only take so much from workouts. The Terps have been quiet in the transfer portal and seemed to pass on former Penn State safety Tyrece Mills, who visited College Park recently but committed to UConn. I'm told the priority is safety, but they'll likely wait until the next portal window and see what's available after spring practices.

Maryland recently offered Varina (Richmond, Va.) defensive tackle JaySean Richardson, and I'm told the Terps are very high on Richardson. They've had increased success in Virginia, including two top four-star prospects in the 2025 cycle, Jaylen Gilchrist and Messiah Delhomme. He's one to watch.

With the staff out recruiting, there haven't been many visitors lately, though Maryland commit Zion Elee is expected to be the game tonight. It'll be a marathon with Elee, who visited Auburn last weekend (his comments here). We'll keep you updated on his recruitment, but it would be a waste for fans to invest a lot of positive or negative energy on this marathon. Maryland has a good chance to sign him, which is the best you could ask for this early on the nation's No. 2 prospect, but Auburn, Oregon, Penn State and others will continue to chase him hard.

On that mystery $10 million donation: university staffers have been quiet about the donor's identity and the details of his donation. But a reliable source said only a fraction of it is going to be received immediately. Much of it is essentially being left in the donor's will. So don't expect that to make a big impact right now.

The 2027 basketball rankings were released a few days ago with two interesting names in the top three. The No. 1 prospect in the country remains Baba Oladtu of Blake High School in Silver Spring. Maryland is involved, but as always with a top national player, the odds are long.

At No. 3 in the rankings: Obinna Ekezie Jr., the son of former Maryland star and NBA vet Obinna Ekezie.

Eric Bossi wrote:

"A seven-footer, Ekezie plays on a high school team that is loaded with senior talent. As a result, he's not the first, second or even the third option on offense. But he makes the most of the touches that he does get. He's a lob finisher who also has a lethal jump hook and he's a plus rebounder and shot blocker. Ekezie's father played at Maryland before being selected No. 37 overall in the 1999 NBA Draft."

I'm told Maryland has been involved with the younger Ekezie, but the same logic applies: all the bluebloods will be involved, making him a tough pull. His father hasn't kept close ties to the program. But we'll check and see what they have to say about Marland.

It sounds like the only basketball recruit attending tonight's game is commit Christian Jeffrey.
