Maryland Football Recruiting Scoop: Major news for the Terps?
It's been relatively quiet lately in Maryland football recruiting, coming off the winter break and the end of the initial transfer portal window. But there appears to be some big-time news on the way that'll loudly break the silence.

I'm hearing Maryland is in excellent shape for four-star Zahir Mathis coming off his weekend official visit to College Park. I've entered a Crystal Ball in the Terps' favor, with a confidence score of eight.
Mathis, a prized edge from Philadelphia, is ranked the No. 114 player and No. 12 edge in the country per the 247Sports Composite. A former Ohio State commitment, he dropped his Buckeyes pledge in November.
Mathis is being recruited by a long list of major programs like UCLA, Michigan, Penn State, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee, Miami and USC. He recently visited Florida State and Virginia Tech attempted a late Hail Mary, but I'd be surprised if the Terps don't sign the 6-6, 225-pound blue-chipper on National Signing Day this Wednesday.
Mathis' recruitment is one of the biggest national storylines heading into Signing Day. Brian Dohn of 247Sports wrote:
Maryland is in pressing need of dynamic edge payers and pass rushers after its pass rush struggled last season and much of the defensive line departed. If the Terps sign him, he'd become their third highest-rated player in the class, behind Malik Washington and Jaylen Gilchrist. According to the 247Sports Class Calculator, Maryland football's 2025 recruiting class would climb from No. 29 to No. 22 in the team recruiting class rankings. Before the era of the transfer portal and NIL, edge rusher was a premier position when it came to January recruiting for those prospects who did not sign in December, and the interest from schools was high as they looked to complete a class.
How schools separate the NIL/revenue sharing for transfers and a remaining high school target or two will be interesting. Philadelphia Imhotep edge rusher Zahir Mathis will be an interesting test case. Mathis decommitted from Ohio State earlier this month and Michigan, Florida State, Miami, USC, Penn State and Oregon were among the schools to reach out.
However, not only is Mathis waiting until Feb. 5 to sign — he does not plan on making visits until January.
The No. 4 player in talent-loaded Pennsylvania, he attends Imhotep Charter School, the same school that produced former Maryland star and current NFL star DJ Moore.
