COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland defensive coordinator Jon Hoke has been named a nominee for the 2020 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coach.
The 56 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division I programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
In his second season at the helm of Maryland’s defense, Hoke has improved the Terrapins in a number of areas. Maryland is allowing 8.6 fewer points per game in Big Ten contests this season and 73 fewer passing yards per game. The Terps boast a top-five pass defense in the conference, allowing just 214.0 yards per game through the air this season.
In just four games played this year, Maryland already has as many sacks as it had in all nine Big Ten games last year. The Terps had seven sacks in a win over Penn State on November 7, the most in a game for a Maryland team since 2016 and the most for the Terps in a conference road game since 2013.
Linebacker Chance Campbell has shined for the Terps defense this season, ranking third in the Big Ten and 18th in the FBS in total tackles per game (10.75) and third in the Big Ten in solo tackles per game with 5.5. The junior also leads the team and ranks fifth in the Big Ten in tackles for loss per game with 1.4.
Maryland has three players - Campbell, Mosiah Nasili-Kite and Ruben Hyppolite II that rank among the the Top 20 in the Big Ten in sacks per game. Defensive Backs Tarheeb Still and Nick Cross rank among the Top 10 players in the Big Ten in passes defended, with Still ranking fourth in the league with 1.33 per game.
Maryland Head Coach Michael Locksley was the recipient of the 2018 Broyles Award after setting numerous school records as the Offensive Coordinator at the University of Alabama.
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.
Proceeds from the 2020 Broyles Award support the mission of the Broyles Foundation; to provide a game plan through education, support, and resources to Alzheimer's caregivers.
