IRVING, Texas. – University of Maryland senior kicker Adam Greene has been named a semifinalist for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy®, presented by Fidelity Investments®. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
Candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the National Football Foundation (NFF) Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

“These 181 impressive candidates truly represent the scholar-athlete ideal,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning whose sons Peyton (Campbell Trophy® winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “It is important for us to showcase their success on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. This year’s semifinalists further illustrate the power of our great sport in developing the next generation of influential leaders.”
Greene is one of 181 total semifinalists from all levels of football. He’s one of 71 semifinalists from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), one of 40 with a GPA above 3.8 and one of just 12 special teams players.

Earlier this year, Greene earned recognition for his outstanding work in the community when he was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®.
Off the field, Greene has been heavily involved in numerous community service initiatives. He currently serves as the President of Maryland’s Chapter of Uplifting Athletes and Vice President of Maryland’s Student-Athlete Advisor Committee (SAAC).

Greene has also volunteered at the Best Buddies Friendship Walk, with the Youth Impact Mentor Program, and has served as a guest reader at D.C. and Maryland elementary schools. The Arnold, Maryland native is also a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

On the field, Greene has appeared in 18 games for the Terps. He’s made 13 career field goals and has connected on 54 of 55 extra points.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on November 1 and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on December 5. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 28th William V. Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
