While keeping Locks may provide some immediate benefits, it would also cause imminent repercussions.
If Locks stays on staff, there is bound to be locker room division similar to the Friedgen/Franklin situation. There would be the "Locks guys" and then everyone else. That is a bad situation. Let Durkin form his own cohesive staff, assembled around his vision of the program.
It's time to rip the Locks band-aid off.
Also, he would demand close to $1 million/yr, that could be better used other places on staff to form a cohesive unit.
As far as Locks, it is understandable that he wanted the job pretty bad and doesn't want to be an assistant with a "recruiter only" stigma for the rest of his career. He wants to be a football coach.
So now, he has two choices:
He can latch on with a regional program. He could make some good money, probably around the $600k he is making here, and really put a hit on our local recruiting efforts.
But, is that the best thing for Locks' career? I don't think so. It would basically carry on his reputation of being a DMV-centric recruiter only and mediocre coach. His primary value would be tied to this area alone.
If he really wants to advance his career, it would be best for him to move to a program outside the area. There he could show he can recruit other areas of the country and prove his worth as a coach, similar to what he did at Illionis. That is how he gets another shot at a HC gig.
So, does Locks want to cut off his nose to spite his face? We shall see.
