COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland head football coach DJ Durkin has announced that Tyler Bowen will join the Terrapins coaching staff as offensive line coach. Former offensive line coach Dave Borbely will remain on staff in an off-the-field role as Special Assistant to the Head Coach.
Bowen comes to Maryland after spending two years at Fordham, where he coached the offensive line and served as offensive coordinator last season. In 2016, Bowen’s offense led the Patriot League and ranked fourth in the NCAA FCS in both total offense (498.2 yards per game) and scoring average (40.1 points per game). The Rams also led the league and ranked 12th in the NCAA FCS in rushing offense (229.7 yards per game).
“Tyler is an extremely talented and innovative coach, who has had a great deal of success at each stop during his coaching career,” said Durkin. “He led one of the most prolific offenses at the FCS level while at Fordham and he’ll be a big asset to our staff. Tyler has passion for this University, having been a former player and staff member. We’re happy to welcome Tyler back to College Park and are excited to have him as part of our coaching staff.
“I appreciate Dave’s contributions to the program during our first season at Maryland and look forward to working with him in his new off-the-field role.”
In Bowen’s two seasons at Fordham, four offensive linemen garnered All-America and All-Patriot League honors. Bowen also coached All-American running back Chase Edmunds, who finished fourth in the voting for the 2016 Walter Payton Award, which is presented annually to the NCAA FCS offensive player of the year. Edmonds led the NCAA FCS in rushing yards per game (163.5) and was second in total rushing yards as well as ranking second in all-purpose yards per game (194.6) and third in rushing touchdowns.
In his first year at Fordam, Bowen helped the Rams offense lead the Patriot League and rank ninth in the NCAA FCS in scoring, averaging 36.8 points per game. The Rams also led the league and were second in the NCAA FCS in passing efficiency (168.30).
Bowen arrived at Fordham after spending the 2014 season as an offensive graduate assistant coach at Penn State University. He helped the Nittany Lions to a 7-6 mark in 2014 and a win over Boston College in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.
Prior to Penn State, Bowen served as the tight ends coach at Towson University in 2013. That year, the Tigers advanced to the NCAA FCS championship game, finished ranked number two in the country and set numerous school records, including most wins in a season (13).
A native of Helena, Ga., Bowen played three years of football at the University of Maryland before becoming a student assistant coach for head coach Ralph Friedgen in 2010 when it was determined that he couldn’t play football anymore due to injuries. In his season as a student assistant, he helped Maryland post a 9-4 record and a win in the Military Bowl.
After he received his degree in 2010, he joined the Terps staff as a graduate assistant. During his two seasons as a G.A. at Maryland, he worked with the offensive linemen and the wide receivers.
