COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore guards Anthony Cowan Jr. and Kevin Huerter, in addition to freshman center/forward Bruno Fernando earned All-Big Ten honors as announced by the conference offices Monday evening.

Cowan Jr. was named a Third Team All-Big Ten selection in both the coaches and media polls, while also being named to the five-player Big Ten All-Defensive Team. This was the first career selection to the all-conference team for Cowan Jr., who garnered a reputation as one of the Big Ten’s most prolific scorers and tenacious defenders. The Bowie, Md. native ranks tied for 10th in the Big Ten in scoring (15.7 P/G), third in assists per game (5.2), tied for third in steals per game (1.5), first in free throws made (159) and third in free throw percentage (84.6%) while leading Maryland in each category.

He finished the regular season first in the conference and second in the country in total minutes played (1,146), and was Maryland’s leading scorer in 17 different games including nine Big Ten contests. Cowan Jr. posted two double-doubles on the season and finished with at least 20 points in seven different games, including a career-high 27 points in an overtime win over Illinois on December 3.

Huerter was named an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection in both the coaches and media polls after compiling one of the top three-point shooting seasons in Maryland history as a sophomore. Huerter’s 72 three-point field goals ranks seventh in the Big Ten, while his 42.1% three-point field goal percentage is 10th in the conference this season. Huerter’s 72 threes are the sixth-most ever in a season by a Terrapin, while the Clifton Park, N.Y. native now ranks 12th all-time in career threes at Maryland (137).

Huerter’s 14.6 points per game ranked second on the team and 16th in the conference, while he also finished 11th in the B1G in assists per game (3.4) and fourth in minutes per game (34.3).

Fernando was named to the All-Big Ten Freshmen Team after a breakout first-year campaign on the court for the Terrapins. The Luanda, Angola native averaged 10.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game for the Terps, and was twice named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week during his rookie campaign. Fernando’s 6.4 rebounds per game and 58.5% shooting percentage leads all Big Ten freshmen, while his 1.2 blocks per game ranked third among all first year players in the conference.

Fernando’s electrifying dunks turned heads nationally throughout the year, with three of them earning a spot in the SportsCenter Top-10 list from December to February. Fernando became the third Terp to be selected to the All-Freshmen team since Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2014-15.

Senior center/forward Michal Cekovsky was selected as Maryland’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.

The trio brings Maryland’s all-time all-conference selection total to 112, with nine players earning 14 All-Big Ten honors since Maryland joined the conference in 2014-15.

Eighth-seeded Maryland will face ninth-seeded Wisconsin when the team returns to competition at the Big Ten Tournament in Madison Square Garden on Thursday, March 1. Tipoff is slated for noon.
