Ernest Udeh Jr. in the transfer portal

This isn't really a huge surprise given that the Jayhawks just landed Hunter Dickinson. In fact, this was pretty much expected. That said, I think Udeh could be one of those rare guys Willard could pursue despite being pretty much set for next year. He was a McDonald's All-American last spring and was extremely efficient in limited minutes last season at Kansas as a true freshman. He was recruited by Willard & Co. coming out of high school and had his best game of the season this past winter versus Seton Hall. I'm not saying I know they are going to pursue and based on what I've been told already, it seems probably unlikely, but if they were going to pursue anyone left at this point, I think Udeh would be one of the very few guys they would try to get. He attended Doc Phillips in Orlando, same high school as one former two-sport Terp, Calvin McCall. He's 6-foot-11, 250-pounds and shot over 75% from the field while averaging 2.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, 0.6 blocks and 0.8 steals in just over 8 minutes per game.

As folks here know, big men usually make a big leap between freshman and sophomore seasons and this kid has all the tools to be a future star.

Lax Question?

Not disputing win by Army ... they outplayed MD in many facets of the game. But Terps had two goals disallowed tonight ... #24 shot and scored but then slid down to stop momentum and slid into the crease well after the goal scored? Why was that disallowed? Announcers didn't seem sure either ... stating the call as "bizarre". Was it possibly because he went inside the arc within the crease? Later an Army player scored and then ran through the crease from momentum after the shot and all good ... a goal. Just confused ...

The other goal, our player was clearly pushed/cross-checked into the goal, scored and landed on the goalie. No goal ... supposedly invoking a seldom called rule that if the refs believed you were going to end up in the crease even if not pushed, then the goal is disallowed. Certainly leaves it open to great interpretation by the refs. BS in my book. And to top it off, because of landing on the goalie, we were called for a penalty and went man down - can't remember if Army scored or not - but a huge swing play.

Would love more clarity around either of these calls.

Terps officially add Jordan Geronimo and Chance Stephens to incoming class

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland basketball head coach Kevin Willard announced today the official addition of Indiana transfer Jordan Geronimo and Loyola Marymount transfer Chance Stephens to the 2023-24 incoming class. Geronimo joins the Terps after playing three seasons and 82 games with the Hoosiers, while Stephens is a sharp-shooting guard who comes to Maryland after playing his freshman season with the Lions.

"We're excited to welcome Jordan and Chance to the Maryland program," said Willard. "Jordan is a veteran player who can help us in a lot of different areas – particularly on the defensive end with his length and overall with his high-level of overall experience. Chance gives us another experienced guard who can help open up our spacing with his shooting. He is a personable leader who also fits our culture and has a high work ethic that will push others."

With Indiana, Geronimo, who has a 7-foot wingspan, played in 82 career games with six starts (all last season) where he averaged 4.2 points and 2.7 rebounds. In his three seasons, he hit .528 from the field overall and has 49 career blocked shots. In 2021-22, he averaged a career-best 4.4 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Hoosiers and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection.

The Newark, NJ, native is a 2020 graduate of St. Paul's School in Concord, NH, where he was the state's Gatorade Player of the Year. He averaged 18 points, nine rebounds and two blocks per game that season and was also an All-New England Class A honoree. He also played on the AAU circuit for Mass Rivals which he led to the Adidas Gauntlet finals.

Geronimo's mother, Dawn Royster Geronimo, was a standout at North Carolina where she was an All-America honorable mention as a senior in 1987. She was a two-time All-ACC First Team honoree, the ACC Rookie of the Year and was the ACC Tournament MVP in 1985.

A native of Riverside, CA, Stephens played in 28 games with four starts for the Lions last season averaging 6.0 points in 17.1 minutes per contest as a true freshman. He hit 49 three-pointers (out of 52 total made field goals) at a clip of 37.4 percent from beyond the arc. His 49 treys were third-most on the team. In LMU's win over Wake Forest in the Jamaica Classic Championship game, Stephens was 7-of-10 from deep for a career high 23 points earning MVP honors for the tournament and WCC Freshman of the Week accolades. Overall, he had 11 games with multiple threes including eight with three-or-more.

The 6-foot-3 guard joined the Lions after a standout prep career at Riverside Polytechnic High School where he was a three-time all-conference selection. As a senior, he earned All-CIF honors as well.

The addition of Geronimo and Stephens brings Maryland's total newcomers to six including the No. 15 recruiting class in the country made up of DeShawn Harris-Smith (Fairfax, VA), Jamie Kaiser (Burke, VA), Jahnathan Lamothe (Baltimore, MD), and Braden Pierce (Woodstock, GA).

The Terps are after a couple of portal OL targets and just had one on campus. They offered Elon C Michael Purcell after hosting him for an unofficial visit yesterday. Started 26 of 33 games he played in at Elon, earning second team All-CAA (that's the 1AA power conference the Colonial Athletic) He committed to Duke this offseason but is back in the portal after spring ball without ever playing a game for the Blue Devils.

The Terps are also after ECU starting OL Nishad Strother, hoping that his connection to Latrell Scott can help them land the offensive guard.

Future football scheduling requirements

According to Brett McMurphy, it sounds like B1G teams will no longer have to play a P5 OOC opponent every season starting in 2024. That also happens to be when USC and UCLA join the league and the playoffs get expanded to 12 teams. Will be interesting to see if Maryland adjusts any future OOC games accordingly. They have OOC P5 games on the books through 2031.

LINK

Here are the Terps currently scheduled P5 OOC opponents through 2031:

2023: Virginia
2024: Virginia
2025: UCF
2026: Virginia Tech
2027: Virginia Tech
2028: UCF, Virginia Tech
2029: Virginia Tech
2030: Wake Forest
2031: Wake Forest
