Dante Trader Jr. earns multiple honors

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland senior defensive back Dante Trader Jr. has been named to both the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Watch List as well as a Campbell Trophy Semifinalist.

The Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year watchlist includes 52 of the nation's top leaders in college football. The student-athletes have all demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field. The Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership, announced a record number of 203 semifinalists.

On the field, Trader Jr. has gotten off to a fast start this season, leading the team in total tackles (21) and solo tackles (12), and passes defended (three). In a 27-13 win over Virginia on Sept. 14, Trader Jr. led the defensive efforts in a second-half comeback with a career-high tying 11 tackles and an interception. He was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16 for his efforts.

The Delmar, DE native is a leader both on his team and in the community. He co-hosts the One Speed Podcast which tackles topics beyond football, organized a backpack drive last summer supplying over 200 fully-loaded backpacks for J.C. Nalle Elementary School in Washington, D.C, and frequently takes part in community service events where he works with underprivileged youth in the DMV area. Trader Jr. also excels in the classroom and was named 2023 CSC Academic All-District honoree.

Trader Jr. was also selected to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and was an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee.

Twenty semifinalists for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year will be announced on October 22. Three finalists will be named for the award on Monday, December 16. The winner will be announced at the award ceremony at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on February 12, 2025. The award is the first college football honor to focus primarily on a player's leadership, both on and off the field. The winner of the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year will also receive a $10,000 contribution in his name to his school's athletic scholarship fund.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 23, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2024 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 10, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 35th Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

WBB: Terps to play in inaugural Coretta Scott King Classic

NEWARK, NJ -- The Maryland women's basketball team will play in the inaugural Coretta Scott King Classic on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 with the Terrapins taking on Texas at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

UCLA and Baylor will play each other as part of the doubleheader event, which will be hosted by FOX Sports, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Playfly Sports. Both games will be televised on FOX and will tip off at 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. ET.

The Coretta Scott King Classic (CSKC) was formed to honor the legacy of Mrs. King and celebrate female empowerment in sports. This is the first time the names of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King have been licensed for a sporting event. The CSKC joint venture partners have partnered with The King Center, founded by Coretta Scott King and currently led by their daughter Dr. Bernice A. King, to launch this event.

"My mother, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, is often thought of and honored as my father's dedicated spouse and life partner. But she was also a civil and human rights stalwart in her own right," said Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center. "She lived for almost four decades following my father, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination and continued the work to create a humane, just, equitable and peaceful world through 'Kingian' nonviolence. She was a leading advocate and activist in the causes of women's equality and empowerment. During a time when the recognition of female empowerment is on the rise and the fight for gender equality in sports is beginning to bear fruit, honoring my mother through a women's college basketball event bearing her name is timely and fitting. Her enduring message of love and nonviolence is sorely needed during the challenging times we currently face. I pray the use of her name for this event further fosters the perpetuation of her indelible legacy."

"We are thrilled to honor the legacy of Coretta Scott King and the entire King family by playing in this inaugural event," Maryland head coach Brenda Frese said. "Bringing strong, fearless women together to play these games is such a special way to honor Coretta Scott King's memory and to educate others about the integral role she played in fighting for civil rights. We are honored to be included in this event."

Tickets for the Coretta Scott King Classic are on sale now via Prucenter.com, Ticketmaster.com, and Prudential Center's Box Office. Men's Lacrosse Commit

4 stars attackman from St. Anthony's. St. Anthony's is one of the premier programs in the country. Terps have not had many players recently from them, but for 2026 they have 2.

New football slogan: Felton for “Taisman”…

As in Heisman, or at least Biletnikoff right???

-career-high 14 receptions yesterday
Most by a Terp in a single game since joining B1G (Okonkwo had 12 vs PSU in 2021)

-14 catches tied Torrey Smith (2010) for 2nd most in a game in MD history

-8 catches in 1st quarter yesterday were the most by any B1G player in any quarter since at least 2012

-41 catches in 1st four games, broke MD record for most catches thru 1st 4 games set by Wychek (38 in 1991)

-41 catches - 2nd in nation

-604 receiving yards this season
3rd in nation
&
2nd most in the 1st 4 games of a season in MD history

-4th straight 100+ yard receiving game in 1st 4 games, 1st to do so in program history

-joined Jermaine Lewis as only Terp with 100+ receiving yards in a 4 game stretch

-3rd B1G player since 1996 to start a season with 100 receiving yards in 1st 4 games, joining Garrett Wilson (2020) and Charles Rogers (2002)

Lots of firsts on this list🥇

Indiana kicker Nicolas Radicic…

Because of IU’s sheer offensive dominance (average 50.5 ppg and 513.7 yards of offense) and their efficiency scoring touchdowns (thus far,) their kicker has been relegated to basically just kicking extra points - is tied for 1st in nation for most xp made with 28 (28/28) but tied for 105th in nation in scoring. Has attempted just 2 fgs and is 2/2. Can our red zone defense force him into more field goal attempts instead of his usual average of 7 extra points per game?

Weekly Update- Week 5

Week 5 is already here. I thought we would be 4-0 at this point. I also thought we could handle IU. I don't see that happening now. Our OL is smoke and mirrors and the DB's are going to get burnt often. We all want to be wrong, but I just don't see the UMD winning this game. Can they, yes, will they I don't see it happening.

My pre-season predictions below.

1. WIN-H vs. UCONN-Do the Terps play this close, or act like a B1G team against wherever they play now? My guess is although the score might be relatively close the stats won't be. Terps 30 UCONN 13.

2. WIN-H vs. MSU-Although MSU may have some talent, they have been up and down. Terp D allows the Terp O to score more easily. Terps 37 MSU 20,
but not that close.

3. WIN-A vs. UVA-This B1G team manhandles the Cavs. Terps take over midway 2H and its not that close. Terps 41 UVA 23.

4. WIN-H vs. Villanova-Solid Vill team that can't hang with this B1G team that will be really finding its grove and confidence. Terps 44 Vill. 17.
Terps D smothers these cats.

5. WIN-A vs. Indiana-A trap game maybe, but a game the Terps NEED to win. They have a new coach who is solid, a lot of transfers, and a new beginning. Don't care, this Terps D keeps the O in the game. Terps 37 IND 20.

6. WIN-H vs. NW. A true trap game but the Wildcats eat too much of the peanut butter without scoring enough. Finally, the Terps will not overlook these guys and take care of business. Terps 31 NW 20.

7. WIN-H vs. USC-The place will be packed, and USC will feel the jet lag. If USC comes in limping, then the Terp D will show them the door. This is a MUST win for the program, a true eye opener for recruiting. Terps 27 USC 20.

8. WIN-A vs. Minnesota. Do the Terps have a major league letdown? Game goes back and forth against a real solid coach but win in the 4Q.
Terps 20 Minn. 17.

9. LOSS-A- vs. Oregon. The wheels finally come off but not until the 2H. Too much talent for the Terps to handle. Big game in big time slot.
Oregon 30 Terps 20.

10. WIN-H vs. Rutgers. Terps pissed off and will piss on the Knights. Lots to play for. Terps 38 Rutgers 20.

11. WIN-H- vs. Iowa. Terps hire the other teams former OC. What? Does this help us? Iowa always solid but Terp O along with a steady D win a close game. Terps 24 Iowa 23.

12. WIN-A-PSU. The PSU fans will have no idea what happened to their team, and neither will the Lions. Terp D will lead the way, with the O being solid and methodical. Terps 27 PSU 20.

Yep, I'm going to be an optimist. In the 4Q of life I'm going against all the so-called experts and all the hype of other teams and players. The D will be the major factor along with a better-than-expected OL. Having 3 OL coaches will make a difference now and in the future.
