PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Redshirt senior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has been named to the watch list for the 87th annual Maxwell Award, it was announced on Monday.

It's the third consecutive year that Tagovailoa has been named to the prestigious preseason list, which recognizes the top Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player in the country regardless of position.

Tagovailoa has helped ascend the Terps passing game to new heights during his three-year career. The quarterback has set Maryland career records for passing yards (7,879), passing touchdowns (51), total touchdowns (59), completions (665), completion percentage (67.4), 300-yard passing games (12), passing efficiency (146.2) and total offense (8,067). His current career completion percentage is the best of any Big Ten quarterback all-time with a minimum of 875 pass attempts.

Last week, Tagovailoa became the first Terp ever to be selected to the Big Ten Preseason Honors list. The redshirt senior was a 2022 Second Team All-Big Ten selection and garnered Academic All-Big Ten recognition as well.

Tagovailoa is one of only three Big Ten quarterbacks (J.J. McCarthy, Michigan & Tanner Mordecai, Wisconsin) on the watch list.

Maryland has had a player on the Maxwell Award Watch List in four of the last five years with Tagovailoa also being on the list the last two years and running back Anthony McFarland Jr. making the list in 2019.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 13, 2023, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 28, 2023. The winners of the 87th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 7, 2023. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards in March 2024.

Tagovailoa and the Terps open up their 2023 season at home on September 2 against Towson.
