COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland center Bruno Fernando was selected 34th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2019 NBA Draft Thursday evening. Fernando was drafted as the fourth pick of the second round by the Hawks to become the 60th all-time draft choice in program history.

Fernando is now the first Angolan national to ever be selected in the NBA Draft. He is the sixth player at Maryland drafted under head coach Mark Turgeon, and will join fellow Terps Kevin Huerter and Alex Len in Atlanta.
The 34th pick was made by the Philadelphia 76ers, but had been acquired by Atlanta in a trade.

“I’m thrilled for Bruno that his dreams of being drafted into the NBA have become a reality,” said Turgeon. “The Hawks are getting one of the hardest working players I have ever had the pleasure of coaching, and Bruno has an incredible opportunity in front of him. This is a special night for Bruno and his family, especially being the first Angolan to be drafted in the NBA’s history. I can’t wait to see what he achieves at the next level.”

Fernando had a sensational sophomore season in 2018-19, leading the Big Ten Conference in double-doubles (22) and field goal percentage (.607), while posting the fourth-most rebounds in Maryland single-season history (362). He was Maryland's first-ever finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award and was the only Big Ten player to earn First Team All-Big Ten and All-Defensive team honors.

Fernando capped his career ranking second in program history in field goal percentage (.595), t-8th in blocks/g (1.6), t-9th in double-doubles (25) and 10th in rebounds/g (8.7). He appeared in 64 career games, making 53 starts.
