MLAX: No. 1 Terps dominate Hopkins, 22-7

BALTIMORE, MD – In the 116th edition of The Rivalry, No. 1 Maryland took care of business dispatching age-old foe Johns Hopkins, 22-7, on Saturday night at Homewood Field. The margin of victory of +15 is the largest in the series that dates to 1923. The 22 goals are the most Maryland has ever scored in the history of the rivalry as well.

The Terps remain perfect at 12-0 and have captured the outright Big Ten Championship with a 5-0 record. The No. 1-seeded Terps will have two weeks off before hosting the Big Ten Tournament in College Park on May 5 and 7. The entire bracket will be revealed on Sunday once the regular season concludes.

In the win, Logan Wisnauksas recorded his 300th career point and finished with eight points on five goals and three assists for his seventh-career eight-point game, the most of any player in Maryland history. He became the first Terp and 19th player in men's college lacrosse history to post 300 points. He had a hat trick for a school-record 35th time, which also marked the 51st consecutive game the Terps had a player with at least one hat trick in a game – a remarkable run.

In his return to Homewood Field, Hopkins transfer Owen Murphy scored a career-high-tying four goals and set a new career-high with five points.

Keegan Khan had four goals, the fifth time this season he scored four in a game, and had an assist for five points as well.

The Terps had 10 different goal scorers, the seventh game in a row with at least 10 goal scorers and fifth game in a row with exactly 10. Anthony DeMaio (two goals, two assists) and Kyle Long (two goals, one assist) also scored multiple goals.

In scoring 20 goals in the game, Maryland set a program record with six games with 20 more goals in a season. In the 97-year Maryland lacrosse history, the only other season the Terps scored 20 or more in five games was 1960.

Face-off Luke Wierman was once again excellent at the X as he won 17-of-27. He also scooped by nine groundballs including the 100th of the season. He became the ninth Terp to reach triple digits in a season in GBs with the last being Charlie Raffa (114) in 2014.

Between the pipes, Logan McNaney had 11 saves, his sixth games this season with double-figure saves. The Terps' defense was stellar all game. Maryland held Hopkins without a goal for a span of (3:30+15) from the second to the fourth quarter.

This is the Terps' sixth Big Ten title since joining the conference in 2015 and in total, Maryland's 35th conference title in its history.

Maryland has now won four consecutive games against Hopkins equalling the longest winning streak for the Terps in the series that dates more than 100 years. Maryland also won four games in a row in the series from 1935-38 and 2015-18.

Johns Hopkins heads into the Big Ten Tournament with a 6-8 record and a 2-3 finish in conference play.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland raced out to a 4-0 lead in the opening 3:29 of the game thanks to goals by Long, Murphy, Roman Puglise and Khan. DeMaio and Jack Koras added goals late in the first quarter to make it 6-1 after the first 15 minutes.
  • The second quarter was more of the same Khan, Murphy, Wisnauksas (twice), DeMaio and Wierman scored as Maryland led 12-4 at halftime.
  • Maryland extended its streak of consecutive games of posting at least a five-goal run with 11 goals in a row, bridging the second and third quarters as Wisnauskas scored three goals in the run. Eric Malever and Murphy also scored to make it 16-4 Maryland, 3:19 into the second half. Long, Murphy, Jonathan Donville, Khan (two) and Wisnauskas scored to finish a 10-0 quarter. Maryland also scored 10 goals in the second quarter against Loyola earlier this year and 11 vs. Albany to lead 11-0 on March 12. The Terps led 22-4 after three quarters.

The Rivalry
  • Maryland is now 48-67-1 against Johns Hopkins all-time, dating to when Maryland started its varsity team in 1923. The Blue Jays count seven more games than the Terps from the 1895-1923 before the Terps were varsity.
  • Maryland goal total broke its previous record of 21 in the series, when Maryland beat Hopkins 21-13 in 1976.
  • The margin of victory breaks the record of +13, accomplished twice when the Terps beat Hopkins 17-4 in both 1954 and 1973.
  • The Terps have now won four games in a row against Hopkins, winning all three games against the Blue Jays last season – the was the first time the teams played three games in a season and first time one of the rivals won all three games in a season.
  • With Maryland winning four consecutive games against Hopkins it equals the longest winning streak for the Terps in the series that dates more than 100 years. Maryland also won four games in a row in the series from 1935-38 and 2015-18.
  • Since Johns Hopkins and Maryland both joined the Big Ten prior to the 2015 season, the Terps are 8-4 vs. the Blue Jays, winning six of the eight in-season conference games.
  • Maryland has now won four games in a row at Homewood Field against Hopkins, marking the first time that has happened in history.

Wisnauskas Watch
  • Logan Wisnauksas became the first Terrapin and 19th player in men's college lacrosse history to reach 300 career points. His assist on Puglise's goal, 2:19 in the game, was his 300th point.
  • Wisnauskas finished with eight points and now has 307 in career on 184 goals and 123 assists.
  • Wisnauskas has recorded a point in 69 straight games, every one of his career. He's four ahead of the next closest player, Asher Nolting of High Point.
  • He has multiple points in his last 53 games.
  • Wisnauskas (307) is third on the active list of D1 players in points, 96 behind the active leader in Chris Gray of North Carolina (392).
  • Wisnauskas (184) is third on the active list of D1 players in goals, 21 behind the active leader in Gray of North Carolina (200). On Maryland's all-time list, he only trails Jared Bernhardt (202).
  • Wisnauksas is now third in career assists at Maryland with 123 as he passed Charles Wicker (121 from 1953-56). Next on the list at No. 2 is Bob Boneillo (146 from 1977-80) and Ray Altman (146 from 1961-63) is the all-time leader.
  • Wisnauskas has seven career eight-point games as a Terrapin – the most in program history – last posting eight (5G, 3A) in Maryland's season-opening win over High Point.
  • Wisnauskas has recorded 35 hat tricks in his career with eight this season. The 34 beats Joe Walters (32) for most by a Terp.
