COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland Athletics and The Brandr Group (TBG) have launched a group licensing program for Terrapin student-athletes on all 20 teams, creating additional and new opportunities to profit off of their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) with Maryland’s official trademarks and logos.

Specifically, Terrapin student-athletes who voluntarily opt-in to a group licensing agreement with TBG will be able to use their NIL alongside and in conjunction with Maryland’s trademarks and logos that have been licensed to Maryland trademark licensees if TBG enters into agreements with Terp trademark licensees to do so.

“This agreement with The Brandr Group is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to benefit, together, in the new era of NIL,” said Maryland Athletic Director Damon Evans. “I have long supported our student-athletes being able to take advantage of their Name, Image and Likeness, and this partnership can positively impact so many of our Terrapins. Our fans will now be able to purchase Maryland items and support their favorite players as they haven’t been able to do before, and our student-athletes are able to profit from those sales through this agreement with Brandr.”

The program, run by TBG, a brand management, marketing and licensing agency, will create opportunities for current Maryland student-athletes to join a group licensing program of three or more individuals from the same team or one with six or more student-athletes from any combination of teams. While TBG won’t guarantee NIL opportunities – the marketplace will determine the demand – it will facilitate group licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes. Participation in the group rights program is voluntary and does not restrict the student-athlete’s individual NIL rights.

“We’re excited to launch this new partnership with Maryland Athletics, opening doors to new, meaningful programs for their student-athletes,” said Wesley Haynes, TBG CEO. “Through this group licensing partnership, they’ll be able to pursue co-branded NIL opportunities that span the Terrapins’ merchandising and sponsor portfolio, while also creating new ways for Maryland’s passionate fan base to engage with and support these young men and women.”

TBG will manage and administer the program as well as develop licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes. The Maryland Office of Trademarks & Licensing licensing will work adjacently to TBG to ensure student-athletes receive favorable opportunities and Fair Market Value. With decades of collective management experience for some of the world's largest brands, TBG also manages the group rights program for the NFL, NBA and MLB players' associations in the college space.
Group licensing arrangements have accounted for a large portion of sports merchandise sales at the professional level for decades. This program opens the door for the same opportunities for current student-athletes at the collegiate level. Maryland fans can own merchandise and other products featuring their school's logo and the names and numbers of their favorite Terrapins.
