Traditionalist would argue that he should hone his skills as a head coach at lower profile conference school rather than start out in the Big Ten. Than there are respected people in the football industry that will tell you this guy is going to be a shooting star when he gets the chance. One only has to look at the pedigree of coaches that Durkin has worked under to understand where he got his training.
The down side to hiring Durkin is he does not have the big name to make a big splash or the track record as an offensive guru to help sell tickets. The upside would be if you only had to pay him $2,000,000.00 a year and could hire a guy like Pep Hamilton to work with Lockley as associate head coaches to run the offense and recruit.
I would rather pay three good coaches $5,000,000.00, than one coach!
This could be a home run hire!
