It seems to me, this years fb team consists of a group of individuals who are more talented that what they've shown on the field as a team year to date AND that a material portion (e.g. coaching problems not withstanding) of our problem is at QB. Because the QB position is critical to success on the field its an extremely difficult proposition to mask subpar play at the position and the problems get compounded by not moving the chains. Notably the D gets tired, etc.
It's my understanding we have four QBs on the roster in alphabetical order: Garman, Hills, Rowe, and Schaffer. Is there some other alternative I'm overlooking? I mean, in this hypothetical discussion, we have to press on with the season. What would you do? Here's my initial thinking:
The bottom line up front, I think Rowe is our best option but I would push to bring Schaffer up as backup quickly. Here are my caveats regarding Schaffer--who some on here have said is a project. No matter what happens to him this year no one should hold him accountable, he gets a by. He's presently our QB of the future so giving him some playing time will potentially help our future seasons. For Schaffer we'd have to keep the play book simple and as the season progresses expand a little bit each week.
Anyway, returning to why I think Rowe is the best option. First, I think at least most of us will agree, he has the strongest arm vis-à-vis Garman and Hills. Second, he looks at least as mobile as Garman. Third, yesterday he was mostly overthrowing receivers (I think because his release point was earlier than against USF and he was nervous in Morgantown) whereas I think Hills misses were more evenly distributed over and underthrowing. The latter point, if true, suggest to me the coaches can work more easily to try to contain Rowe's mistakes.
Anyway, I'd really be thankful for anyone/everyone's ideas/thoughts and its completely okay to have different opinions on the topic.
In closing, here's to the team rallying around each other and better success as the season continues! Go Terps!!
