Rosemont, Ill. - Maryland senior guard/forward Dez Wells earned co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday. Well shares this week's honor with senior forward Frank Kaminsky of Wisconsin. Both Wells and Kaminsky also were also tabbed co-player of the week on February 16.
Wells averaged 19.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game with a pair of double-doubles in leading the Terrapins to road wins at Rutgers and Nebraska. For the week, Wells connected on 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the field and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line.
In the 60-50 win at Rutgers on Tuesday, Wells scored 20 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and tallied four steals. He scored 18 points, corralled 12 rebounds and handed out four assists in the 64-61 at Nebraska on Sunday evening.
In addition, Wells has averaged 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in conference play as Maryland concluded its inaugural season in the Big Ten with a school-record 26 wins.
Maryland, (26-5 overall, 14-4 in B1G), ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press poll, will open play at the Big Ten Tournament on Friday, March 13 against the winner of Indiana-Northwestern on 6:30 p.m. EST.
