The biggest news coming out of Wednesday's football practice was that starting offensive tackle Michael Dunn will sit out the remainder of the spring because of a nagging back injury. Also, on the shelf is defensive back Josh Woods. Albeit, the injuries are said to not be serious and the two will have no trouble being ready for training camp in August.
Throughout the first three weeks of spring drills, the Terps have had their problems at various positions, mainly at the quarterback spot and the receivers trying to eliminate dropping the routine passes. The past couple of days it's been the penalties. There has been numerous motion penalties mixed with lining up off-sides and the dreaded holding calls. "It's all because of a lack of focus", Edsall said after Wednesday's practice. It seemed like, today, the penalties hit an all-time high for the spring.
Edsall talked more in-depth about the folks who earned a medical red-shirt season. The eight include: Daniel Ezeaqwu, Alvin Hill, Andrew Isaacs, Quinton Jefferson, Taivon Jacobs, Albert Reid, Cavon Walker and Caleb Rowe.
The punting competition seems to be heating up among the two freshmen. During the session Nicholas Prichard hit punts of 48, 49, 38 and 44-yards. Lee Shrader was good for 41.,50, 40 and 47-yards. All of the punts had quality hang time and were picture perfect. But, you'll have to understand they were punting under virtually no rush. So, things will change when the bullets start flying, especially in fall camp.
As always, there were several highlights during Wednesday's contact practice. Albert Reid had a 55-yard run for a score. He also caught a screen pass and rambled 25-yards. Brandon Ross absorbed a vicious hit from Anthony Nixon, but continued to run him over for a 25-yard gain. Ross also bounced an inside run outside for 25-yards. Fullback Kenneth Goins had an impressive 35-yard run, too. From the passing game, DeAndre Lane caught a 35-yard TD pass from Perry Hills and Jaquille Veii took a screen pass 45-yards.
On defense Kingsley Opara had a sack and the 'play of the day' was Zach Dancel's interception of Shane Cockerille and then he handed the ball off to Sean Davis who returned it 35-yards. AJ Hendy had another pick, this time, in the red-zone. Edsall was impressed with AJ Hendy's play all spring saying that he's playing with a lot of confidence and doing things as he has been coached. Edsall also said that his eyes are a lot better and he's seeing the plays before they unfold.
On the sidelines, Wednesday, were 10-12 recruits and high school coaches from South County, Spalding, DeMatha, TC Williams and Council Rock South. Also, former Washington Redskins General manager Charlie Casserly who's currently working for the NFL Network.
Thursday is the annual 'Pro Day' and as many as 20 NFL scouts are expected to be on hand.
