It only took a few weeks for the Terps to really get after it in spring football practice. Yes, the Terps have been hitting for the past few sessions but today was the first day of real contact in a scrimmage atmosphere. They endured the cold, wet and freezing rain conditions to have a practice that head coach Randy Edsall was okay with.
Edsall said that they had a few problems with signals and line-up situations but that is par for the course this early into spring practice. Edsall had a referee crew out there as well. The Terp running backs had a couple of fumbles including Joe Riddle's that went into the end zone after an impressive drive. The quarterbacks had their challenges, too. But, managed a couple of sustained drives and two touchdown passes.
The defense continues to get better and Milan Barry-Pollock came up with a pick. Overall, Edsall said the defensive front needs more work on technique, especially with their footwork.
On offense, Levern Jacobs had a TD catch and Marcus Leak had a catch and run for 40-yards and a score. Edsall has been impressed with Levern Jacobs this spring after spending the season on the 'Scout Team' last year. "He made himself a better player. This spring he's got better speed, hands and toughness." In terms of the rest of the receiver unit, Edsall said it's hard to judge with so many guys out with injuries but he likes how the guys have worked hard.
Brad Craddock was his usual stellar self today making every kick. With his holder on the shelf, Caleb Rowe, he's been working with punter Nick Pritchard this spring.
Edsall commented on the running backs again today saying they all are running hard and downhill. He was particularly pleased with how Brandon Ross is running. He also praised new backs coach Terry Richardson and the experience he brings from the NFL to college to the staff.
Other players that stood out for Edsall, DL Brett Kulka, LB Malik Jones, DL Kingsley Opara and LB Jermaine Carter.
A couple of NFL guys were at practice today. AJ Francis and Dexter McDoogle were working out in the weight room.
On Saturday, the Terps will engage in a full team scrimmage. It is not open to the public.
